Got A Letter From Coach...

It's not like they banned you -- they just asked you to do any future returns with a receipt. If you enjoy using the product don't call in and make a fool of yourself--give it a couple days--and if you decide you still want to shop at Coach just keep your receipts. Even on a gift can't you get a gift receipt?

Dillard's won't take a retrun without a receipt or gift receipt. I don't think LV will either (in my city they don't.) Plus there are MANY others.

I live close-ish to an outlet that I visit maybe 2-3 times a month. I made the mistake when I first moved here and began outlet shopping of being interested in a bag, but not getting it that day and thinking I could come back for it the next day. That's not the case with the outlets...everything I ever went back for the next day was always gone! So now, I've convinced myself that if I like it (or think I like it) then buy it because I can always return it. I've even had SA's tell me, as I'm standing in the mirror trying to decide, to "just go ahead and buy it ~ you can always return it if you don't like it"!?! That's the premise that I've been operating off of lately, but now I'm thinking that might not be such a good one...

Needless to say, I've made serveral returns to the same outlet I've purchased at, always with the receipt. Sometimes I exchange for other bags and sometimes just get a credit..... after reading this whole thread, I'm now worried any future returns and a possible letter in the mail?!?

Sorry this happened to you Evy and didn't mean to hijack your thread....but it seriously has me concerned. I picked up a Hampton stripe satchel last week that I'm just not in love with and now I'm wondering if I should return it or gift it or sell it or what?!?!

IMO stores seem to be getting crazy weird with the economy the way it is??
Sorry this happened to you --I always keep my receipts because I exchange lots of items!! Put them all in the same drawer or something so you will have them!!

You really don't need your receipt at Dillard's or Macy's...they put a coded stamp on the ticket and when it's scanned everything comes up. I take my receipt with me but the SA always says they don't need it. I am always very careful with my receipts. I think every store has their limits on returns (mainly without receipts). With Coach, I have a folder that has the printouts of every bag I buy, and I put the receipts in a small ziplock bag and keep it in the folder. When my Luci developed some loose stitches and needed repaired, I got my receipt out and took it with me to the FP store (just in case). I find myself buying less from stores simply because I hate returning things...and you just don't know alot of times until you get them home!

I have a box (Coach, ironically) that I keep every receipt and tag in, just in case I ever need them! Maybe just make it a point to do this in the future, just in case!

I am really sorry that you are frustrated and embarrassed. It must be such a bummer to get that kind of letter. :hugs:

I will admit though, after reading the whole thread I had to go back and check if you were actually banned. I am another who is a little confused by the level of outrage and irritation.

The OP is not actually banned from much of anything, except that she must have a receipt when she returns. I think this is standard retail policy in many stores. She can still shop, she can still order, she can still purchase, she can still change her mind and take it back. She isn't getting charged for former returns or anything of the sort, nor was she prevented from making the returns. Coach (a corporation apparently plagued with shrinkage and reselling issues) notices that she is making not one, or two, or three, or four, or five....weird returns in a handful of months, and with no way of knowing her story, decides that okay, just to be safe, please be careful to bring a receipt. I don't consider that bad policy.

The issue is also being taken very personally. I agree that it is unfair and hurtful to be a loyal customer and feel accused. However, this is not an individual SA or manager who labeled a problem customer and suddenly barred your return. The decision came down from corporate headquarters, quite possibly automatically. No one on Coach's end is making a personal judgment, it is a business based decision to stop returns from possibly questionable sources. Being a frequent customer doesn't prove that someone is honest. Many regular customers probably DO bend legal and company regulations. Coach isn't being passive aggressive, they're a corporation and have no motive to be passive aggressive. They are saying exactly what they mean: these returns are questionable, and because six transactions in six months looks chronic, we need to ask that they stop.

Also, Coach provided an opportunity for her to call and speak with someone. Keep in mind that no one is going to call corporate and confess a life of crime. Whether she uses that number to have a fit or to explain her position, Coach handed her an appropriate outlet to further discuss the situation at her discretion.

I don't think it's ideal for a customer to have to get a warning letter, and I think it's so sad if they are someone honest and reliable. I sincerely hope it gets all straightened out. However, I don't understand the shock mentality, if nothing else.

Evy, what did LP say?

I read through here and I didn't see anyone mention the sheer cost of excessive returns. Though you end up paying more, how much does Coach lose when you return a bag no longer on their floorset. They could of sold that at FP. Also LP is a considerable part of increasing prices so Coach is in a rock and a hard place. Take for instance this board- on one hand ppl complain that the prices are going up- which LP is a factor in this. On the other hand they complain about being banned, etc. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

OP, you are going to have tell your friends and family to get gift receipts when they buy you stuff or to just get you gift cards. Be honest with them and tell them you may not have the same likes they do.

Yes, it seems there's nothing to worry about if you have your receipts and tags on...they do encourage you to buy and then return if you don't like/doesn't work. That is one reason why I do like Coach so much. I can't always make those big decisions at outlets. I like to go home and think and try and think again, etc.

I hope that's not something you truly think about SAs at any company. I have a masters degree from a very prestigious business school and work part time in retail in addition to my day job because I LOVE it. I love to help people find a great item to treat themselves with, or help them pick out the perfect gift for a friend. As cheesy as this may sound, I thought about all my customers on Christmas morning who were giving their loved ones things I helped them pick out. I feel so fortunate that I could be part of that experience for them.

I know you said you weren't trying to be snobby, and I truly hope I am not coming across that way as well, but it doesn't seem quite right to preach non-judgement and then make the assumption that an SA isn't making a good living for themself. It's never right to look as someone and just assume they aren't as good as you.

I have received SO many snide remarks from customers about how I probably can't even afford the products I am selling, or speaking to me like I am an idiot, or telling me how much change I should be giving them.

SAs should never treat you like you are a burden to them or that you don't deserve their product, but as a customer, it's also nice to treat the SA as an equal and with respect.

Sorry for the rant, I'm a little oversensitive at times! :crybaby:

Some SAs really do treat you like this, the SAs at the very first Coach store I ever went into treated me like this. I then vowed to only buy online, but I moved and tried the new Coach store and was treated very nicely, so I shopped with them (until I discovered the outlet, lol!) It didn't seem like Melissa was looking down on SAs, just saying that they shouldn't have looked down on her.

I get what everybody's saying about LP and Coach being a business and losing $$ and everything else, but then why not just change the policy to requiring a receipt for every return? Yeah, some people would be upset, but they'd know the deal from the get-go. Don't tell people they can do something, then send them a nasty letter when they do it more times than you'd like. Just MHO.

I am sorry this happened to you but I hope it works out in the end to your satisfaction. I would like to state that I believe that everyone should be careful with returns - with receipts or without receipts. I think that with the economic downturn Coach is also looking at all the returns with receipts as well and that if one returns alot even with receipts you will come up on their radar. Just my opinion.

I keep all of my receipts and tags in a small coach shopping bag, typically in the little envelope things they put the receipts in. I recently sold one my bags on eBay and was able to send the original tag and a copy of the receipt to prove authenticity. I've also referred to the receipts and tags when trying to locate item numbers on smaller pieces that don't have a creed stamp. It is just so valuable to hang on to the receipts/tags.
