Wow, this is so...sad and crazy. Just finished reading through this entire thread and can honestly say that while I am not entirely surprised this practice has been and is going on, I still am extremely disgusted and disappointed. That said, it makes me feel ever so blessed to have worked with honest SAs (both here in the US and at FSH) and received my Bs and K without having to resort to bribery or tipping or purchasing other things before being offered a B or K. I even received the specific colors and hardware that I wanted without having to do any of that. I feel terrible for those that want a B or K so bad that they have to do this. :(

+1. I feel very lucky as well.

Why do I have this funny image of the H staff now being besieged by some desperate clients with fat wallets? All this talk about tipping and bribery will just make the problem worse and in turn, make it tougher for those who choose not to "sweeten the pot."

Probably because it's a very likely scenario.

While this kind of bribery might exist for several and several years (have to admit, I never experienced it myself), I am sure that several people were not aware until this thread.
Because of this thread, some might take their chances and give it a try.

You are very lucky!!

Interesting discussion so far.

For the purpose of further discussion, I would like to hear views on whether one might consider 'building a relationship' with a particular SA be considered a form of tipping.

In addition, how would one define the following:

A) tipping
B) obtaining commission
C) bribery

Any thoughts on this is appreciated. Thank you.

I was about to post similar question....

But I did not...I think the definition of each word is in the dictionary, anyway. Personal interpretation is another story:-)

I actually think each of those are very different, but after reading this thread sometimes they go hand in hand. Bribery happens before the event (i.e. the sale), tipping and commission occur after the event. But, a commission is paid by the employer not the customer.

Tipping - discretionary payment after transaction
Commission - part of SA pay structure and legal
Bribery - illegal, payment before transaction

I go to SCP, too!!! and I was told that I need to spend $10k on RTW, housewares, watches, scarves, etc, before I can even be considered for a birkin or kelly!!! did any of the SAs tell you that??

SCP is hard as the demand is so high hence they need you to build up your profolio before they can offer you any b or k.. leather and cashmere shawl are not included.. sigh..

A good friend of mine in SoCal visit Madison store few weeks ago and was able to buy a Black 30B with GHW. He tipped the SA with 5k cash after the transaction, they met outside of the store(I guess the SA taking lunch break). This is happening out there, unfair for the people spending lot of money but didn't get offer a B or K. Forgot to mention, my friend does not live in NY and have no purchase history from Madison store.

5K for buying a B30? I am sorry but I'd rather buy from reseller than engage in such an illegal activity.

That's what I thought too. I really wanna report that thing to the store but realize I'm still need B and K from them. Maybe after I move back to California in few month, I will report this. I'm thinking this is not just SA, there might be coming from the management as well because my friend does not have any purchase history. It is impossible to buy a B without any purchase history.
