Fake diamonds -- different than fake purses?

Exactly how many people have confronted someone about their fake jewelry? Are they going around telling people that they just bought diamond earrings, when they're really CZ? How do you know?

I have multiple pairs of CZ earrings from a store I love in NYC. I get many compliments from the SAs in Bailey, Banks, and Biddle, Cartier, J.E. Caldwell, etc. I merely say "thank you." They were less than $10 a pair. Would you consider that "fronting"? I'm not claiming they're diamonds, I'm just letting people assume. Who am I to tell them otherwise?

Frankly, the one time I had an SA ask me if my engagement ring was diamond, I found it rude and unprofessional.

i'm weird about this. i wouldn't wear fake diamonds, per se, but more like, i wouldn't wear fake diamonds that are considered "solitaire" jewelry, i.e. studs, engagement ring, solitaire pendant. But pave diamonds are different to me.

Like, I would never wear fake studs, or an engagement ring, or wedding band. But then there are some pieces, like costume jewelry, that you find in the "fashion accessories" counters of department stores, and then i would totally wear those, like the huge flower rings encrusted in crystals.

know what i mean?

You'd wear cocktail rings for example. Fun costume jewelry that wasn't trying to look real necessarily.
I'm down w/ that, I feel that way as well.

i'm curious -- what does everyone consider 'trying to pass'? Short of outright asking someone if their jewelry is "real", how can one 'lie' about his/her jewelry?

When a purse is reproduced there is a difference in the material, stitching, color ect. A good thing to remember though, is perspective. A lot of celebrities who carry those purses that some people are pining to have got them for free. The designer gets wonderful advertisment that way. Its just a purse and now-a-days, most of us "regular" people have fake ones and it takes away from the uniqueness of it all anyway.

What I'm bothered by is the information being provided about diamonds vs swarovski crystals. Diamonds is where the child slaves, war on other countries including the US, inhuman treatment of the diamond miners, enables illegal weapon purchases that enables terrorists to attack with. A good book to read about that is Glitter and Greed by Janine Roberts.

I had diamonds until I learned about all the horrible events that take place to put a rock around my neck or on my finger. It's horrible rather than romantic.

As far as Swarovski crystals, the only child slaverly that goes on there is after the crystal is made in Austria, some are sent to clothing factories where the child is forced to sew on the crystals by hand. This does not happen with the jewlery but you'll want to take a look at the "sparkly clothes" you wear.

I only wear ethical diamonds (or antique diamonds) and I also wear CZ and white topaz jewelry. I have real diamond stud earrings, but my favorite earrings are actually generic CZ studs.

My boyfriend believes in buying diamonds for Israel, but in all honesty I would prefer an engagement ring with either a Canadian diamond or a lab created one. (Both of which are actually pretty expensive if you research them, so I don't really see it as "fronting".)

I'm not a big diamond person... I like sparkly things, but not to the point that I would sacrifice my ethics in the name of a "better value." I would rather have a $50k watch made by a craftsman in Switzerland than a $50k diamond ring made with blood diamonds or diamonds that support war/child suffering.

think i have an israeli diamond but canadian diamonds are also conflict free

if i really didnt want to wear diamonds i would get a saphire. i just cant stand cz bc it is deliberately designed to look like a stone it isnt

I think fabulous fakes are a great option! For many people, they are a wonderful (and affordable) option to natural diamonds and gemstones.

I have some Asha jewelry that I use when I travel and a pair of huge studs I wear to cocktail parties. Most of my jewelry is "real" but my fakes serve a great purpose.

I love my fakes, my swarovski/cz's/rhinestones. I don't tell people they are diamonds, if they ask specifically I tell them what it is. But I'm not going to go around saying "BTW my jewelry is fake." If someone compliments me I just say thanks, does anything more really need to be said? I don't really see it as fake vs. real anyway, jewelry to me is about fashion and accenting my outfit and wearing what makes me happy. I think most people would know my jewelry is fake anyway, I wear larger pieces and I have a lot of different ones and I wear things that would be very dressy and expensive (if they were actual diamonds) during the day. I also wear a lot of fun fashion-y stuff, it's about creativity and uniqueness for me.

I'm am by no means trying to sound like a snob so please don't blast me if I do sound like one.

I personally, just don't wear fake diamonds or fake handbags. To me a fake is a fake no matter what the reasons are for buying them. My hair color is natural, my nails are real & everything on my body is real. This is just me & my personal preference. No offense to anyone who who gets their hair dyed, french tips, plastic surgery or buys fake anything.

All this being said I suppose there is a difference between knocked off designer goods & faux/fashion jewelry

Just to throw this out there.. but some diamond CUTS are copyrighted, like the asscher cut. If someone copies that cut (and there are many)

Does that imply a FAKE asscher as well? still, a real diamond! :)

Only the Royal Asscher cut is patented, and only patented in diamonds (therefore it's not a problem for the RA sims on the market, which repro the cut) BUT that being said, there are RA clones on the market now.

The Asscher name is used interchangeably with Square Emerald cut these days. The original Asscher cut is an antique cut that is still being cut today, but not by Asscher - they switched to the RA, which I believe they have stopped production on. LOL, hope that makes sense!

Thanks for clarifying EricaD. :)

also, how about Harry winston reproductions, Tiffany settings, u get the idea. They might NOT be registered but anyone who is getting an inspired is not necessarily trying to show off, kwim? :)

Regarding the fake bag/fake diamond issue, since there's nothing inherently proprietary about a diamond, I don't see why it's problematic for people to buy fakes - it's not the same as a designer item or a patented cut. To me, copying a designer bag is more like copying a designer setting, like the T&Co solitaire or all the "inspired by" designs that exist and look identical to the original. And to tell you the truth, as long as the copy differs slightly from the original and is being represented as a copy, I accept that, because beautiful things will always be copied - it's just the way it goes.

Dare I say what I REALLY think? I think that those, like myself, who prefer the "real thing" (watches, bags, diamonds, etc.) get a bit miffed when so many wear copies and get the same "street cred" as those who shell out the big bucks for the real thing.

That's why so many people get all clenched when they find out a friend or relative has been wearing a sim and fooling everyone. All the judgment comes pouring out - it's like they feel their own luxury item has been devalued somehow.

For example, my dream watch is a Cartier Tank Francaise. SERIOUSLY makes me drool. I have loved it for years and will have one some day. I would not get a copy. I only want the real thing. If I spent all these years pining for it, and saving for it, and finally got one on my wrist, just to find that some friends (for example) had bought really good knock-offs that no one could tell apart from my precious original? That would tick me off (pardon the pun), and it wouldn't be because I was outraged about their heinous violation of copyright - it would be because it simply takes away from my own pride, accomplishment - bragging rights.

I used to wear sims. I did so because I couldn't afford a diamond in the size I wanted and it gave me a sparklie fix. I never went to great lengths to pass it as real, though I certainly didn't shout from the rooftops that it was fake. And when I did have the means to buy a real diamond, I did so. I have many friends who were sims for a variety of other reasons and I look at a well cut cz (like Wink Jones sells, or Asha) as a beautiful gem in its own right - it's just not for me.

There will always be designer copies and diamond copies. The quality will never match the original because you get what you pay for. Everyone should just buy what they like and what suits their needs!
