Fake diamonds -- different than fake purses?

I have diamond studs, then I have a pair of CZ's about the same size. There are just times when I don't want to wear the real ones because I'm afraid of losing them and I ALWAYS wear my CZ's when I'm on vacation.
No big deal to me, as others have said, it's not like diamonds have a patent on them and no one else is supposed to make anything similar.
It's a personal choice and I don't think anyone should look down on anyone else for choosing real vs. CZ or vice versa.

I don't mind them, since there are many controversial issues about real diamonds and the violence that often accompanies their mining and manufacture. At least with a fake diamond, no one got their arm cut off, and the earth wasn't destroyed by the mining process.

personally i dont like faux anything. there are controversial issues re diamonds but then there are options like saphires and other genuine stones. i personally just dont like anything that is pretending to be something it isn't and i feel like CZ is.

Littlesharon is right. There are high-end versions of EVERYTHING, from furniture to architecture to jewelry to clothing to shoes and bags. Most of us do not buy designer/authentic everything; we all make choices. There are threads to that effect in the fashion subforum and many people have no problem combining lower-end clothing with high-end bags.

It is all a personal choice as far as I am concerned. I won't buy something that falsely carries a designer's name (copyright infringement), but I don't buy high-end everything. A diamond is clear and sparkly and was more or less arbitrarily chosen to be valuable. There are other clear and sparkly things for those who don't buy into the idea that diamonds have inherent value, or for those who choose to spend their money elsewhere. I think that is a valid choice, and I have no issue with Moissanite, CZs, crystal or white topaz.

ITA. Also, CZ and Moissanite both actually do occur naturally in nature, just not in sizes or amounts suitable for making jewelry. So that's why the synthetic is made. So if I just want something sparkly and affordable, I'm all for it!

ITA i was surprised no one else had mentioned this before. i love my diamonds as well as the next girl, but i would never look down on someone for choosing cz based on the fact that its so hard to track where the diamond actually came from and be guarenteed that child labor wasn't used or that there wasn't any violence during the mining process.

Thanks for pointing this out,not everyone is aware of this fact ;).

No one designed or invented the diamond itself, it is a naturally occuring thing. A designer worked on a handbag design and a company registered the trademark. A fake handbag has a stolen design and name, but a fake diamond has had nothing stolen..UNLESS...it is particular cut or style of jewelry, like Tiffany, that has been copied.

I hope that wasn't confusing! *L*
exactly!:p

Interesting thread. This JUST came up with me when I spent a few days out of town with a friend. We were talking about fake bags and she mentioned people who wear fake diamonds. She said she'd NEVER wear CZ or anything (and trust me, she has a fabulous e-ring and diamond studs) and doesn't think anyone else should either. It was interesting to hear her point of view and then find this thread!

Another story - a lady in a doc's office has this amazing diamond engagement ring and wedding ring. I mean, I eye it every time I'm in there and just stare at it. Well, the other day she told me it was $30 from a catalog and it's CZ!! I told her she shouldn't tell people that, because it's a gorgeous ring. I was completely fooled by it.

very true..

This thread is so interesting. I hate fake handbags with a passion because of the crime behind them. I would never wear a cz ring but have a princess cut style pendant that I'm happy to wear. I hope to get a real one in future years but the cost for a diamond pendant of the quality that matches my e-ring is high.

My dh and I have been discussing upgrading my 1/2 carat solitaire. I purchased a 1 carat cz to get an idea of how it would fit in my solitaire wrap. I don't have anything against simulants, especially with the controversy surrounding diamonds, however there is something off with the cz. It sparkles, its a nice color but if I turn my hand a certain way, it looks glassy. I do think it looks better than diamonds of poor clarity but not as good as a nice clarity real deal.

Interesting. CZ's and moissanite do not bother me at all. In fact, I think they may even be better in some respects, because no one is going to get their arm chopped off for the sake of a man-made stone. The reality with diamonds is that.....sometimes those things do really happen.

I agree with this as I was certain for a conflect free diamond.
