About the YSL Mombasa - It might not be perfect for you.
It is a gorgeous bag, and I adore mine. It is roomy, the shape is fabulous - I get compliments every single time I carry that bag - from the fashionista to the new-age artist who wouldn't know a designer if they walked up and introduced themselves.

BUT the handle is a royal pain. I might be the only one who feels that way - see Meg's review -

Mine is the 2007 pewter edition - I tried both the pewter and the horn, and it can dig painfully into the shoulder after a few hours. If I had it to do over again - I'd probably have considered the Vincennes a lot more (It has the same shape - but the handle is metal, without the digging into your shoulder pokey bits which bother me about the Mombasa)

Thanks for the link & your advice about the handle, VL!! You know, I was wondering about the handle myself - but I just can't take my eyes off of the bag (typical of me and YSL or anything that Tom Ford has designed)...and since I haven't read any complaints about the handle on tPF, I didn't worry about it. But your comments give me pause. I will def. research this more in the YSL sf...

So instead of purging to save for ONE, I'm purging to fulfill the purpose of recycling!

I thought I would save up for that gorgeous Givenchy, but I realized that it's not practical. It's WAY too expensive ($2k), I am a student and it's just not practical :p Instead, if I want something, I have to sell something else, that is my new policy. No matter what. I just purchased a Coach Tribeca tote today, in a gorgeous raspberry color, and am making plans to consign a Dior bag in place of that.

What does everyone else think of recycling?

I think recycling is a great idea... even better if you can sell two and then buy one. I've been good lately... I haven't bought anything even though I sold two bags last week.

Lo, I love the way the mombasa looks as well but that handle scares me. I don't think I could make the jump for it because of the fear that it would dig into my shoulder. I love single strap hobos though.... I wish there were more out there!

I love them, too! One thing I like about BV is that most of their hobos are single strap, and the strap is usually part of the bottom of the bag. Cole Haan has a lot of single strap hobos, too.

Er, not that I'm encouraging you to shop. ;)

I'm happy to read all these postive experiences. Thanks all for sharing. I've found this thread very inspirational...

As for me - I"m doing great in my purging experience. I've by now sold and/or gifted ALL my bags that no longer worked for me and it feels incredible!! I recently purchased a lovely light pink hobo and am about to try one in cream for the spring. I'm enjoying the whole handbag process more these days after I've de-cluttered.

Last week I purchased my Nook with a beautiful Kate Spade cover that makes me smile whenever I use. I can't say enough good things about the Nook. And I have to say it looks beautiful in my handbag which is another nice bonus.

Special thanks to Tejasmama for the encouragement on Ereaders!:smile1:

I'm thinking of doing this too, Loquita...purging a handful of bags to fund one biggie. I have too many bags right now that I'm kind of "meh" about, and I'd prefer to have just a few that I absolutely adore in my favorite colors.

doreen, you are totally encouraging me towards BV... i love love the colors, like the bright blue and magenta. The ball seems like a perfect style for me. It's definitely on my list of bags to check out or consider buying in the future, but right now I think I'm content with my collection. I probably could get rid of a few more bags though.

lovebags2
, congrats on the nook! i just looked it up online and it looks adorable!! keep us posted how you like it.... there are so many ebooks to choose from so it would be nice to hear your review.

I've been following this thread and I am very inspired by it. I have decided to purge a bunch of my bags and start supporting smaller designers. I've become addicted to Etsy and have found a few shops with handmade leather bags that look divine. I get tired of supporting certain designers (Loquita, I believe you know who I'm referring to) who don't put customer service as a priority. I can get a beautiful bag on Etsy that was handmade for me and costs quite a bit less. I still look at other big brands but I feel like it's time to support the smaller shops and artisans.
