Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

Loquita, I keep coming back to this thread for some positive reinforcement. I love how inspirational all the ladies are and how supportive everybody is of this process.

You see, I don't have a lot of bags at all (a Treesje, which is my "throw down" bag and 3 RM's) but before I found the tpf, I would buy maybe 2 bags a year and would faithfully sell one to fund another. Don't get me wrong I love bags but I was in control of my purchases.

Well, since coming to tpf, it has been (a seemingly) endless vicious cycle of bag buying/selling and you mentioned something many posts ago about being tired over the constant buying/selling. I am over it. The bags I have now I love but am afraid to take them out for fear of getting them dirty/stained--how sad is that?! So they sit in my closet looking pretty while I beat up my poor Treesje.

This thread has seriously inspired me to buy exactly what works for me and hey, it's okay if I only have 1 or 2 bags because they will be classic pieces, investments that won't go out of style like zippered this or tasseled that (if you know what I mean...).

So thank you Loquita for starting and continuing this insightful thread!

Ooooh, I CAN’T WAIT to see your Bays!!!!!

I’ve started the slowwwww process of listing bags….

dseer, I was a bit concerned about the Bays being too big, too structured, too heavy, or uncomfortable to wear over the shoulder. I find it to be none of these things, in fact, which makes me so happy. The size is very managable, and I am trying very hard at the moment to not start dreaming about another Mulberry bag. I need to sell some more bags before I proceed...and impulse buying is out of the question.

Lo!! yoo hoo.... where are your pics!! we want to see, now! i'm so glad to hear that it's working out for you... and i want to hear an update on up in the air. :)

I just read this entire thread - wow it's gotten long, but it's really exciting!

I've purged my closet a few times before, always in an effort to gain control of my collection and trim it down. I have to admit I started out with maybe 2 closets full of all kinds of bags. I got rid of a lot of them, discovered TPF, went a little Balenciaga crazy, and then realized that there is such a thing as too many.
Now I am down to 2 shelves of bags that I use and love. I am actually down-sizing a little more in the hope of taking the number down to 10 bags (not sure I will succeed but it's worth a try).

I normally am not attached to my belongings at all and can sell should the need arise, but I've gotten to a point now where some of the bags I have feel irreplaceable and it's a good feeling - maybe I will eventually stop getting tempted by every pretty bag I see.
I think buying a new bag out of money that came from my own closet makes shopping feel guilt-free and it makes me appreciate the new bag even more.

Can't wait to see pics of your new buys!

I used to have the same ideas about the Bays. But I have to say they were all wrong. Can't wait to see your red Bays Lo! I babied my Bays too much and I had too many bags last year so I never took it out yet. Will use it when I reached the 10 bag number goal.:D

haha, you're right, my wishlist keeps changing. i see that you have another bays on your list now ;) so glad you like the red!

i've only sold one bag so far, but i think my purchasing has totally changed. certainly having more expensive bags on my wishlist means that my purchases have to be more thought out, because i can't really buy them on a whim. but it also makes it worth it to save for a bag that i REALLY want, rather than buying one without planning just because it's a good deal.

i've only sold one bag so far, but i've started listing more, and hopefully by the time the weekend's over, i'll have about 7 listed plus some clothes. hopefully they'll sell semi-quickly! some of them are harder to clear out than others, but i'm not using them, and i've totally been drooling over bv and mulberry; keeping the end goals in mind helps : )

i've only bought one bag recently, and that was to replace a bag that i'll be selling. style is the same and color's similar, but the details (hardware, etc.) are more to my liking and the leather's a better quality and i couldn't be happier. when i received the replacement, it was instant love. it drove home for me that i'd rather have a few bags that i absolutely love and are a joy to carry than a lot of bags that i just "like"--i want ones that i'm still smitten with years from now.

jx, you are so kind to write this - and I have to say that this thread has been wonderfully supportive for me, too. :smile1: I think that many of us are "getting" this new approach and truly enjoying it. I'll admit that sometimes the urge to just get myself a CC and go handbag-nuts with it hits me :p, but I just stop myself for a second about how I would feel in the end and it's just not worth it. I compare it to eating a bag of cheaply-made candy when you are not really hungry and just feeling horrible afterwards. Give me a Longchamp Le Pliage that I have paid for in full and really enjoy any day!!! :lawl:

Lo!! yoo hoo.... where are your pics!! we want to see, now! i'm so glad to hear that it's working out for you... and i want to hear an update on up in the air. :)

Here's my take on the movie:

I  George Clooney: not too perfect looking (I love his salt and pepper hair and dark eyes), and he is so clearly intelligent and funny as hell. He can be a tad jerk-like on screen and I will still find him intriguing and ultimately be willing to drink the Kool-Aid he's selling. Vera Famigia's in the movie as well, and she is wonderful as always. The other star of the movie's a relatively unknown young actress, and the three of them are spot-on in terms of casting and acting. The movie is very well done in general, and so appropriate for the times that we are living now.

That said, its central message is a bit trite (I am not a romantic comedy person msyelf though I wouldn't necessarily categorize this movie as such) but it's still worth seeing as a first-run movie. (I usually tend to put movies into groups: Ones worth paying full-price to see in the theater; Movies that are better left to second-run local theaters; Stuff that I can wait to see on DVD; Movies that are so horrid that I won't even watch them for free to TV). :p

Sorry for the long answer! I'll get back OT now... ;)

Here's my red Bays, btw - just a few shots. x

I do love this bag, and am so happy in some regards that I bought it because now I know that a Bayswater is an excellent choice for me. It is what I am looking for in many senses, and I am almost 100% certain that one will be in my small collection. This is a well-constructed, classic bag that will not disappoint even after lots of use.

xxx  To put it briefly: A few weeks ago my long-term SO (we live together) learned that his father has cancer. The initial sense was that it was an operable form of cancer, and that while it would be difficult there was a good amount of hope. Two days ago we learned that this hope is most likely false, and that it is almost certainly terminal cancer. Needless to say, we are all incredibly upset, as this is a very tight-knit family. Therefore, we will most likely be needing to suddenly travel overseas soon (his family is in Spain) and the money that went to this bag needs to be reallotted to that cause.

To look on the bright side, it is wonderful that I didn't have the opportunity to use and love the bag more - and I know that it will work for me once I get one later on. And a bag is nothing at all in comparison to some of the other issues that have come up lately. It's all relative, right?

Thanks for listening to me. I deeply appreciate it!!!

fashionmom, did you tell us the story about how you purged? I will go back and try to find, but I do not recall the story. Please share if you haven't!

Congrats on the new bag LO. I love all these stories they are so inspiring. I am not sure if I told my story. Maybe just bits and pieces. I purged and then binged a bit. It is hard. I do try to keep my collection under 10. I had approx 10 bags. I sold 2 Marc by Marcs because they were a little young for me. I also sold and LV bucket because I had 2 one damier, one mono (I sold the mono). In addition I sold a Gucci hobo.

I sold because I was not in love with these bags anymore. I felt like my style and taste has changed. So I decided to buy a LV batignolles, a Fendi patent leather dejour handbag. My first Fendi and I am in love. Lastly I bought a Burberry tote. I was went on vacation so the totes were really useful. I have examined everything and I am really happy EXCEPT... After chasing my 5 year old on the beach in CA when I was gone I have decided I need a good cross body hands free bag. I have 2 kids one 5 and one 2. After that I feel like my collection is complete. I do not want to sell anything I have, but it is still hard not to shop.

Here are the photos of my new bags...

OH LO, I'm very sorry to hear about your SO's father. And you are right, family needs to be the priority. A bag will always be there. It is a beautiful bag, looks so soft. Hopefully you can find a good home for her. Best of luck with whatever the future holds for you and your family.

Thanks so much, thedseer and redskater!!:hugs: I love the bag but it's just a bag, after all...and I think that it will sell quickly, given that I have priced it fairly and it's in perfect shape.

Wish me luck. :smile1:

fashino_mom, gorgeous, classic choices, every one of them!! I especially love the LV.

ITA with the ease of having a cross-body bag - they are no-brainers for me, and we are lucky that they are in style now so there are so many beautiful ones to choose from. And a tote is a must-have for me as well. I am currently (and still) deciding between an LV Mono Neverfull and a Custom Longchamp Le Cabas. It's so hard to decide, though.
