Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

Just stumbled upon this thread....have never been in pursuit of one bag really. If I can't get it when I can without sacrificing anything in my collection, I don't go for it. It has to be something I really want to do that and so far, nothing yet. I have a faily large collection. Mostly Coach but they're all loved by me. I can remember when and where I got most of them. Most of them I've never even used! Brand new with their tags tucked in the inside zipper pocket. I'm more of a collector than anything else. LOL.

I really enjoy reading this thread. For me, my biggest struggle lately is being attracted to certain styles (read: satchels) that really don't work with my lifestyle. I convince myself that I can make it work and then after several days of shuttling kids to basketball practice, toting work stuff and running errands, I realize that I must have been delusional at the time of said satchel purchase. So, of to be sold it goes....

My goal right now isn't to get a particular HG because right now, with my casual lifestyle, I don't really have one in mind. My goal is to make sure I buy wisely and choose bags that fit my lifestyle. Yes, I may need a black satchel for business meetings and a nice briefcase but I have those already and they can last for years.

And I really do love getting rid of things, taking things to Goodwill and purging stuff on a regular basis. I like having empty space in closets and drawers; I'd rather have a few things I really love and use all the time than too many choices. That said, I still like having several casual bags to accomodate the day or to help me dress up since I"m a jeans kind of girl right now (and loving it--whoever invented pantyhose should be severely punished.)

I have selected three bags to sell. One bag I really don't want to because I love how it looks so much but I also know it isn't right for me so it's going to have to go. I will let you ladies all know how it goes!

I ahve learned this too thanks to LO. I went through the whole handbag purge right after she did. It worked wonders for me. I enjoy my smaller collection and I appreciate they way bags function more too. However I still can't help adding. Right now I am in the market for a crossbody bag.

I should also say thank you to you Lo! I have also been following this thread but didn't say anything for quite a while since my last post because of my recent move. This thread and my recent home move (to a smaller apartment with fewer closets) made me start purging my collection again. I already sold 9 bags in 2009. I just sold another one this week and will list one or two more for sale later. I am trying to downsize my collection to 10 bags. I realized that I never need more than that number.

The collection purge made me think seriously what kind of bags suit my lifestyle more. I agree with some other girls above who mentioned the same issue. I carry a lot of things every day so hand-held/heavy bags are obviously not for me. I'm not a party girl, neither do I go to operas often, thus clutches are almost unnecessary. Besides that, I told myself to make a list on what I really use and need for different occasions (will do this soon). With a list I think I will be very clear of what should go and what I will buy in the future.

baipang, that's FANTASTIC!! Your sales success is inspiring!! Please keep us posted, it gives me hope!!! :D

I am just like you - not much of a party/club person, so clutches are not necessary. The only time I do carry one is at the occasional wedding but if the time comes and I need one I will just borrow or buy a simple one like a Lauren Merkin, which is nice but won't break the bank.

Besides your good news, I have some happy news of my own - I had to go into work early today (and I am sooo not a morning person, lol) but when I arrived home from the afternoon commute a package from the UK was waiting for me - my new red Bayswater is here, and it is perfect!! The seller (a kind PFer) was amazing: very meticulous, communicative, and just a true pleasure to work with. I love the color of the bag, the leather is excellent, and the design is clean and classic - just what I was looking for...I'll post pics soon!! :yahoo:

Congratulations Lo!
What color did you get? I am seriously thinking about taking my oak Bays out to use now :D.

Congrats on the new bag, Lo!

Can we persuade you to take a family pic?

I'm still waffling on the metallic bag that would be the last one to add to my collection. I found a great candidate, but I'm not sure if silver is the right color for me. I tend to gravitate toward bright blues, but I already have 2 blue bags and in a small collection, how many blues can there be? KWIM?

So far I have:
1 big black hobo
1 medium blue shoulder bag
1 big cobalt blue hobo
2 clutches

Plus assorted totes that I don't count because they're nylon/canvas "knockaround" bags

so, there's a little hole in that I don't have any smaller shoulder bags, plus I could use a metallic. I have my eye on one from Ferragamo, but the opening is a little smaller than I'd like. I'm going to play with it in the store, practice getting my stuff in and out of it, to see if it will work IRL.

fashionmom, did you tell us the story about how you purged? I will go back and try to find, but I do not recall the story. Please share if you haven't!

I got a radish red Bays with silver HW!!! :yahoo:

It's a color that was especially made for the UK outlets. Red is my fave color, and I have been wanting a Bays forever, so this is an ideal choice.

I'll post pics very soon - I just got back from the movies (Saw Up in the Air wth George Clooney). ;)

PS: USE that Oak Bays, woman!! (Or send it to me, lol). IMO that is one bag that looks even more beautiful with time and use...nothing like an Oak bays with patina!

I can take a family pic, sure! (It'll be a small family pic, though, ha ha ha ha).

As for your metallic bag, I think that silver is lovely, but if you are not entirely sold on that, have you considered pewter? I find pewter to be a bit warmer and very versatile.

Playing around with it in the store is a fantastic idea, as well.
