Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

And the other bag is still up in the air. I think that my second bag will be patent leather, since YSL patents are so good and I need a bag that can handle the sloppy New England weather. I am leaning towards a Mulberry Alexa at the moment, but I would wait on that bag for a good while regardless since the colors they are releasing this season don't work for me.

So that would be 3 bags total. Or maybe I will just stick with 2...but having all my bags coming from the same designer makes me nervous. (Been there, done that, don't like it). :p

Congratulations!
I think you will need three - just to have a bag for some contrast. Personally, I'd go for a Mulberry or a LV to have a very rugged bag. But you can wait a couple of weeks. Honest.
I know, it is really exciting. But see what you are jonesing for once you get those two in your closet.
No sudden decisions!

This is an exciting and shocking thread:D Loquita with 3 bags?! We will see how long that lasts:graucho: I see you ending up with 5 or so, which is still a good number!

I agree with your concerns about having all the same designer. If you are to have a handful of bags, you want some variety. Also, if you fall out of love with the brand you end up purging an entire collection! Been there:p

I love the idea of a YSL or two, a LV (neverfull is the best rugged tote!), your black crash LM Midi, and one more bag with a pop of color! I know how you love color!

This is motivating for many of us who would like to live with fewer bags! It is just so hard to part with some:p

The BE girls are all following you here Lo!

I tried to get down to five bags...am still trying. Gave away a choco Roxanne (Mullberry) to DD. Will gift my fuschia Hold Me to a friend.
Leaves me with: Black pebbled TME Midi
Purple pebbled Hold Me
Oak Bayswater
Black Ledbury for "little black bag"
LV Mono Speedy 30. (will sell this; don't use it.)
LV Mono MM Neverfull.(how can anyone live without?)

Want to get a red bag.

Chaz has three: Etouffe Birkin, LV Black Epi Speedy, Picotin.

Having fewer bags means you use and enjoy them all the more. More carefully selected. Takes away the anguish of constantly being on the hunt and turns your attention to other things. If you get the best, there's no arguing with taste! You're there, done, arrived!

Thanks for the excellent advice! I see our point about not sticking to just one designer. I can't get all of the bags that I want at the moment, but here's what the list is looking like:

- YSL Black Zippy Hobo (on the way)
- Belen Echandia Love Me Midi in Black Crash (already own this)
- Mulberry Alexa (medium size) in Oak Leopard or Black Snakeskin (leaning heavily towards the Oak Leopard, though. I LOVE leopard prints and have been eyeing this bag for months).
- LV Mono Neverfull MM
- Something red, most likely a medium YSL Easy Bag in red patent or red leather...or if I could find a YSL red patent Tribute, I would be all set!

I don't want any more than 3-5 bags, this list makes me feel crowded, in fact. :p

Muahahahahah!! Sandy, you know me...as the list evolves, it looks like in the next 6 mos. or so I will hit 5 bags. But that is my MAX. And you are right about my need for color!!! Not having a red, purple, or fuchsia bags really cramps my style, lol. It is a question of me finding the perfect one though, so I am willing to wait.

I'll keep you posted, m'dear... :graucho:

WOW!!! I am so impressed with your list, TG!! I would love to be there soon...I think that 4-5 bags may be the best number for me (I started at 3, but sigh...I may not stick to that, we'll see). I really like your choices in terms of designers/brands - all excellent workhorses! I am focused on the same ones myself.

And I completely agree that you need a (red?) YSL :graucho:

Lo - Only just now saw this thread, but it's really inspiring and a pleasure to read since I love the way you write!

My number is around/slightly less than 10 now, excluding smaller bags/leather goods, and honestly, I'm not sure I can trim that number down in the long run, but you've inspired me to do so in the short run. I'm realizing that of those 10ish, I definitely don't absolutely LOVE all of them, or use them as much as I should (I'm using only about 4 regularly), so I'm definitely considering purging and ultimately replacing those with more classic bags that I really love and that are a pleasure for me to carry over and over.

Most of my purchases are more thought out since they are all bought debit/cash, but I'm realizing that they should be even more thought out, and if I don't end up loving/using something, it should go to someone who will love it/use it even more. I'm slowly clearing out.

I do clothing purges regularly, and it really makes me feel so much better! I do love the idea of having a goal in mind. I've had my eye on getting a Bayswater for a while now, so I may just have to use that as my incentive ;) Though I do love YSL as well - good choices!

I think I will continue to examine my collection over the next few weeks and figure out what I can and can't do without. Thank you for the inspiration, and please keep us updated!

All right, Loquita. I have a question for you. I've been thinking about this whole purging thing for a couple of days now, and here's the hurdle I'm having trouble jumping: I don't know that I can really let everythng go without regrets. Here's where the question comes in (I was getting there!): Did you feel totally ready to let your bags go, no regrets, or did you just decide to jump off the cliff and let them go before you had time to think about it?

FABAE-- I don't know how LO feels, but she inspired me to purge my collection. I was ready to do 2, but 2 I just got. I like the second 2. However I am in a quest to get my DREAM bag. So far it is working knock on wood. The TPFers told me it was better to get your dream bag. However I don't want to push you off the cliff if you are not read.

^Thing is, I don't yet have a DREAM BAG in mind which, I think, makes the whole purging idea more difficult because you're purging for...what? I'm thinking that Lo had her dream bags in mind already before she jumped, which is half the battle, but I was just wondering how far into the "this can go, this can go, etc" process she'd gotten. I have 1 bag in my collection that I'm ready to sell, another I'm iffy on, and then several more that I'm not!

Lo definitely has inspired me, which is why I'm obsessing over it (that's how I usually do things - over-think it until I get sick of thinking and then just DO IT! :D) The whole purging idea just sort of fits in to the point I've reached in life - keep what I love, use it, get rid of what I don't love, quit worrying about things I can't fix, fix what I can, get rid of bad habits, pray more... So when I read this thread, I thought, "Awesome! Fits right in!" I'm still pushing myself toward the edge of the cliff (and I'm one of those people who stands 10 feet from the edge of the cliff and says, with my stomach sitting in my throat, "Be careful over there. You could fall." [figuratively and in reality!])

There's a 3-year-old paging me! Gotta get off tpf!

fabae, purging is great, I think if you have a set bag you are dying for! I wouldn't know as I have no experience. I don't own that many bags.

Lo, your mouth is going to drop open when you read this, but I am thinking of selling my chocolate YSL RG bag for an Ebano Cervo! - Only at the thinking stage!

Do you mean the BV cervo hobo?

If so....you won't be sorry. That is my favorite bag! I love it.

Lo, looking at your list, the duplication that you have in your collection are the two black bags, YSL Hobo, and BE LM. They are both big, slouchy, black shoulder bags. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Maybe the BE will have to go...? Since you had your heart set on the YSL?

I am so into purging my collection that I'm giving away handbags. Where I live, I can't do ebay...and this is a true purging of things I do not need. My fuschia Hold Me is gorgeous, but it has hung in my closet for a year. So...it's gorgeous..and then what? Taking up physical and mental space. Out she goes.
