Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

I am finding bag heaviness to be a deal breaker these days. I love the look of my Oak Bayswater...and the idea of this gorgeous tote. But it is heavy...and may have to go.

I am also getting away from HUGE bags. I'm concerned that the YSL Easy will be too big...unless I get the small.

Bag heaviness is a big issue for me too and I daren't go there tbh.

Anyway, one thing I've noticed recently is that looking at the most 'classic' and time-defying bags, they mostly appear to be either small or medium....

Ok, Loquita You inspired me last night to go through my bags, and see what I could purge. I thought I could get rid of 10 comfortably, and not miss them... and then I chickened out.

So I think I am going to try the "Lo/Doreen" Bag Collection Management Method:
Go through the closet, and hide all the bags I don't carry regularly. Move all those bags I'm marginal on to another area.
If, come May, I haven't hunted down those bags, and tried to wear them... then off they go!

(baby steps. I think the last time I had less then 10 purses, I was 4 years old!)

Thank you for posting this thread!

I absolutely love this challenge! It is so contrary to most of the influences we get here on tPF! In wait of a new C bag I posted a thread in that subforum and put up 5 possible bags to let go, planning to let one go, to allow for this new bag. Surprisingly, I posted one bag for sale today and sold it within hours and now plan to send out another 1-3 bags to consignment! I really do not like selling higher end bags online myself. So I may be getting rid of 4 bags for 1! Unheard of for me:p

Hi again CB. You are right on both counts! I AM going there re the heaviness of bags...and my dear Mulberry Bayswater may just have to go...

I agree on the second point...except for when you look at pix of fashion biz ladies at Fashion Week, dressed in black, they all have the most wonderful, huge black bags. But then, the Chanel, the Birkin...these are the classic bags in medium size. This is precisely what is making me look anew at my wardrobe. I am tired of carrying a suitcase around! I find it highly enslaving, unliberating, not to mention annoying.

I only keep 4-5 bags at a time and mainly use one daily for work. However, I think it makes a difference if some people are collectors or not. My mom holds on to everything and I'm the complete opposite. Unless something has sentimental value or I actually use it, it's out the door. I go through my closet twice a year and if I've not used it or reached for in the last 6 months to a year I sell or give away, including clothes, bags, belts, etc. I am a minimalist, and don't like clutter or items collecting dust. I also don't change out my bags daily, but for those that do then purging would be a little tougher......or impossible. Some people like different color bags to match their outfits daily so again not sure purging would work. My boss for instance wears a different bag everyday depending on what clothes she's wearing so she would not be comfortable with just a few bags.

If it's just sitting not ever being used I say pass it on to someone that will love it, and you probably won't regret it.

I love the Bayswater, but never bought it because I can't do heavy bags. It's so lovely, but I know it just won't work. I like to carry a bag that I don't even realize I'm carrying....like it's part of me.
When I first got my rive gauche I was afraid it might be heavy, but it's so comfortable messenger style that it's not a problem.:smile1:

TG, this comment really hit home with me. On the one hand, I love to travel light, move fast and enjoy wearing a crossbody bag because I can be hands-free with kids. Small bags rock.

But then again, I have kids. Kids that I often take out in public for long jaunts, which often requires my carrying more of their stuff in my purse than my own! Also, I tend to be a bit of a girl scout in that I often carry extra meds/hand sanitizer/insert must-have-item-here. So, I've been on this 5 handbag journey with TG and some other ladies but have really strugged because 1) sometimes I need a tote, other times I need a handbag, etc., and 2) it seems I just carry too much stuff!

So, after going through this tread some more and listening to all this great advice, I'm going to try the idea of choosing a few bags and tucking the other few I have away to see if I really miss them or not. Plus, I've decided to just keep an additional 'catch all tote' for all the kids stuff/extra stuff and keep it in my car. That way, I have it with me but I don't have to 'carry my life with me' all the time. I agree that it is exhausting.

TejasMama, I think we may have discussed this ^^ before in the BE forum a year or so ago. I leave a bag in the car for all those must-have-items and it works really well for me and my DS. Though, I have to say in the morning I'm still throwing a ton of stuff in my bag to get us to school and work. Which again is why the LV neverfull is so perfect.

Yes, I do think we may have discussed this before! I must have twin brain. All my good brain cells are long gone.

I don't know why I never did this before, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I have a great little Chinese Laundry zip tote that could easily hold all kinds of stuff and would be good even in bad weather. Then, I could start scaling down my bags in terms of size. However, I don't think I could ever give up one or two large shoulder hobos because they are so comfortable and really do catch the extra stuff as it gets thrown my way.:smile1:

^^The LV Neverfull is really a incredibly practical bag! I had an MM some time ago, got bored and sold it. I tried to order one recently and my SA talked me into something else!?! Needless to say, I have a Neverfull on its way to me as we speak! I am getting the azur but am thinking of getting both as it is too perfect a tote!

Sandy--I've often considered the damier NF but never pulled the trigger. I convinced myself that I could get away with using something more entry level for the everyday toting of my stuff, but I just may consider that bag for a milestone birthday present one day. Of course, I would have to get rid of a couple of other styles first...

I love this thread because I think it really helps bring us back to mindfulness when we see so many great styles. I think DoreenJoy has mastered the art of enjoying looking at many styles but only needing to own a couple. I envy her... I don't have a lot of bags but I'd love to really pare things down and simplify a bit more--maybe send 3 or so bags off...and then REMAIN content with what remains.

out of curiosity - and i know a few people have answered this already - what few bags can you see yourself getting down to if your purge - the essentials/MUST HAVES - or what have you gotten down to if you've already purged? brands/styles/colors/whatever
