Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

I'm so glad to have found this thread! It has really forced me to sit down and make a list of bags I currently own. So far I've counted around 16 that I would place in the mid-range designer category including one HH that should be on it's way, plus maybe 6 or 7 "cheapies" including a couple from etsy sellers. I'm also happy to see a few here from the RM subforum because about half my collection is RM! It kind of sickens me because I would have liked to have gotten into more brands but it is what it is.

Thing is, I can't really purge many because most are not really sought out styles, which allowed me to buy them at such a deep discount in the first place but makes it harder to resell. Also, I should be happy to say that a good number of them are well loved and do show wear because I never intended to sell any. Anyhow, I am going to think my list through and try to rationalize my bags over the next little while, I just wanted to post here first so I can find this thread again. :p

^ i love rm and i'm glad i didn't branch out cos that will probably mean having more bags to sell now for me lol. i sold 2 rm recently 1 is a more popular style and the other is not that popular in rm sf. i was surprise that the not so popular style actually sold for more than the popular style. i think if u do decided to sell the bags than just remember to take lots of pics and treat it more as purging/ cleaning out closet vs making money/ breaking even. i sell with the mindset of "giving" the bag away to stranger if they do sell for low prices since i don't have anyone to pass my bags to. i'll admit feeling not so happy when the bags sold for low price but i i get over it and feels happy that the bags is now in a loving home :) good news is since u bought the bags at a deep discount than u probably will not loss too much money on it .

I talked to DH last night about purging, and he doesn't see the value in selling. If anything I regret some of my cheaper bags more, some of them were not really that cheap (around $100) and I should have waited and bought something better with that money. I still need to figure out my perfect bag number and combination as well. Even some of the bags I don't love have saved my bacon a few times when I really needed something specific for an event or a trip. So I'm trying not to be hasty in my decision making.

Has anyone ever been successful in trading bags on bon? I have a MAC clutch that I would like to trade for another style of bag that might suit me better. I just can't get over the chain strap. It's such a beautiful bag though and is dressier than my other clutches because of it's gold signature hardware...

^ i know there are a few ladies at rm sf that has traded bags and seems happy about it . definitely don't rush to sell since realistically the money was already spent on the bags and if u are not in need of extra cash than take your time and think about it.

Unfortunately, the resale of RM bags is really bad right now. “Rare” bags that would go for higher than retail not too long ago are selling for much, much less, or not selling at all. It made it even harder to sell my RMs – I even though “well, maybe I should hold on to this and that to see if the market gets better in a few months….” But ultimately, I just wanted to finish my purge. I agree that you can’t really think about breaking even or trying to recoop your money. Besides feeling like I’ve purged some of my guilt, it’s been really great to hear how happy some people have been. I got a message the other day from someone saying she was so happy and that it’s the most beautiful bag she owns. This makes me feel good!

Now that I’m almost done purging, I’m trying to be reflective about why I love what I have – why did these make the cut and the others didn’t? This helps me think about what would be good future purchases, and what I should avoid.

Confusion – I’ve done a trade before, and it worked out pretty well. I had a bag listed, and someone approached me about doing a partial trade. But it also was someone I sort of knew through TPF. I probably would have made more money if I sold, but I thought this was a nice alternative.

My last bag went out yesterday. I have 1 LV, 3 L.A.M.B.s, 3 RMs and 1 Dooney. Then I have several smaller clutch type/date bags. And I'm good.

The only thing I would like at this point is a decent sized black hobo in a worry-free material... kinda like my LV Galliera. So maybe something coated canvas or nylon or something. I didn't realize how hard it would be to find something like that in the right size that is comfy on the shoulder. But I'm in no rush, if it doesn't meet all my requirements I'm not going to get it.

thedseer & knasarae: which RM's did you end up keeping? You both had such nice bag collections.

A lot of my bags are made out of weatherproof material. Pretty much for every type of bag I have (e.g. medium satchel), I have a weatherproof version.

Uh oh...I'm getting the "next Bal bug"!....I was supposed to wait for my next bday..but if I save for it and ready to go....is that breaking my goal for myself to early??? :shocked:Eeep. It won't be for a 2-3 months that I'll be ready..and I am saving for my only bag in my siggy...but my bday isn't until next May....lol:amuse: that would make it six months....not too bad.

I finally sat myself down and forced myself to decide to sell bags that I haven't used in a year or so. No point in hanging onto a bag if I think, "I love it, but I can't see using it again."

Unfortunately, this holds true for many (all?) brands right now:

And I thought the same thing (espcially since I'm trying to get money to buy another bag right now), "Maybe I should just hold onto it for a while." Problem is, when I've made the decision and am ready to sell a bag, I'M READY! So it's not going so well in terms of sales, but I feel better just having made the decision to sell. Now I just have to actually sell them so my husband doesn't see al the boxes and freak out and think I BOUGHT all of that recently!

I also feel better having analyzed WHY I decided to sell. I've already put it into practice, too. I'll look at a bag online, have the initial "I love that!" rush (or worse, "That'll work") and then realize that it has quality X that won't work for me. Helps narrow down the "want" list.

I didn't realize how hard it would be to find something like that in the right size that is comfy on the shoulder. But I'm in no rush, if it doesn't meet all my requirements I'm not going to get it.

This is how I'm feeling about the last 2 HG colors on my list. But I'll wait. It's too depressing to spend the money on a bag, find out it's not right for you after you've carried it, and have to sell it and take such a major loss. And, really, I enjoy the hunt!

right now my keepers are black & blue stamp mam and sage stamp mab, with bqp mac, distressed grey mac, and gold snake lovers clutch rounding it out.

i have 1 bag and one slg on the chopping block, and another maybe on the chopping block after carrying it today and realizing how heavy it was. the rest have already been sold.

sooooo much less than what i had before, but definitely enjoying what i'm left with.

i had various reasons for purging most of my RMs, but among them i came to the realization that i really like hobos, and that RMs are too heavy for me.

sounds like you're doing great knas and fabae!

klj - i don't think that's bad - you obviously want it very much and have though about it, and i don't think a new bag every six months is bad, as long as you're comfortable with it.
of course, i'm sort of biased because i have bal fever now. still only have the one, but doubt that will last for long....

I guess for me, I became more and more interested in BV and Bal but wasn’t super comfortable dropping so much $. Also, I wasn’t happy with a lot of my bags, and wasn’t using many either. So it seemed like a win-win: get rid of bags I don’t use, and use the money to fund bags I will.

I was also over having so many bags of the same style, and wanted some variety. I spent a lot of time on the other subforums researching what I wanted, and this also got me excited for my purchase and more focused on purging. It got easier and easier.

I’m really happy with the quality and classicness of the new bags I purged for, and also thankful to have some lighter bags – as much as I love RM’s dogleash hardware, the weight kills me!

Good luck!

Me too! Ha ha...I was only going to highlight some of yours but ended up doing the whole thing...ditto for me.
I was interested in Bal and Chloe..but wasn't sure about spending too. However, when you think about it.. purging all the one's you only halfway like or never use...usually adds up to the same(or mine did anyway) as a Bal or Chloe..depending on what you get. (I got my Chloe at a small discount so it wasn't sooooo painful.:p ....then I just saved for the Bal I recently got.
I'll never own a TON of Bal's but a few(meaning probably 3 or 4) would be nice...I'm being very thoughtful in my purchase decisions..nothing hasty.. because I personally can't afford 30 of them darn it...;)

Good luck with whatever you decide, JC!:flowers:
