eBay, etc. General Question/Answer Thread

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

The funds deposited in my account weeks ago. This is totally out of the blue. She seemed super happy to get the bag. So bizarre. yeah I have ample proof it was a legitimate sale and she's out of her mind. LOL
Hopefully she just didn't recognize the charge on her credit card statement. Once I had someone claim they hadn't received the package I sent; it turned out she had ordered a lot of items and disputed the wrong one.

It's not uncommon because of the way ebay transactions show on c.c. statements. It's difficult to tell what the charge is for when it looks like this so buyers may forget or just not realize what it is they're being charged for:

This is an easy win for sellers and if you need to respond to the case do so. (That usually involves pasting the tracking number.) Although they send you notice of the claim, ebay generally handles it internally and closes the case in the seller's favor.

Does the notification say that you don't need to do anything?

This should give you peace of mind.

What is a "seller's dispute fee"?

What is a "seller's dispute fee"?
That's the $20 fee for when a seller loses a chargeback case. (An example would be if a buyer opens a chargeback for NAD (not as described) in a case of a regular non-authenticated sale. Seller protection doesn't protect against NAD.)

But in this case, it's one that the seller did everything right so ebay protects the seller (as stated in the policy).

I didn't know there was a fee. Is it only if you contest the case rather than accepting the return?

Hey TPFers!
I want to sell my Chanel WOC. Where is the best place to list it? Vestaire maybe? I fear that I will be scammed by a buyer something like claiming the bag wasnt in the parcel or didnt receive it etc...
as a seller and buyer on eBay etc
I would try a local high-end consignment store first

I won't sell anything at a price where I could lose the item and profits and dealing with some of these companies is impossible so anything over 400 for me
however others might have a different opinion

This year, those consignments are more struggling than ever, especially some of those consignments have stores, don’t be shocked on the low balls they give. This year, the higher amount of money in hand is probably selling on your own even after selling platforms take their cuts.

I have an LV bag for sale and someone is using my photos to sell the exact same bag! Do I have any recourse? I asked her to take the photos down and she said the ebay agreement gives her permission to use them.

When I called her out on it and said that her item is likely not authentic if she cannot use her own photos she replied:

(I'm assuming your item is listed on ebay. If your pictures were stolen from another site where you listed your bag, all bets are off!)

Ebay does give permission when the pictures are stolen from another ebay listing. It's in the TOS among the hundreds of pages of terms we agree to when we use ebay. IMO, it's wrong for sellers to use another seller's images for multiple reasons, most important of which is that the owner of the pictures owns the rights to them. (Copyright is automatic when you create your own images.) If one had megabucks and wanted to fight ebay on it, you could probably win since ebay shouldn't have the right to allow others to use your intellectual property - pictures and/or descriptions.

And especially when selling a pre-owned item as the condition won't be exactly as shown, the picture thief is opening herself up to NAD (not as described) claims and dings to her seller metrics if a buyer files a claim.

With all that said, it's easier to have a workaround for reporting than to try to fight with ebay and I do have one.

Over 10 years ago, at a time when picture theft was actionable, it was necessary for sellers to be VeRO-recognized and they could report the unauthorized use of their work. At the time, I was finding my pictures in other sellers' listings several times a month and when contacting sellers, they'd get nasty and defensive.

So I applied as VeRO and when I reported listings and they were removed, the ding on a seller's account was more severe than a "regular" ebay removal.

Once Ebay changed the rules so others could steal our work, reports had to report the pictures taken from another site - Bonanza, Poshmark, Tradesy, Mercari -- any other secondary site where you might list your items.

So if you list on another site, you can report the ebay seller's listing and for the source of the images, show the link to the other outside-ebay listing. That's my workaround and it works every time. THAT type of picture theft is NOT allowed on ebay.

This is the reporting form:

I'm looking at an item with no shipping charge specified. seller says she doesn't know, it's calculated at check-out. If I make an offer and it's accepted, can I not complete the sale if I don't like the shipping charge? or once offer is accepted I have to go through with purchase?

seems from my search that you don't see the shipping charges until after you're checked out? so then if you don't like the shipping, you have to buy the item (you've already bought it)?

For calculated shipping, if you click to see details, you should be able to put in your zip code and it'll show the shipping amount. That happens before you buy.
