Thanks Doc, by a little bit, I meant sparingly as opposed to in one area rather than another. I'll keep hunting though.
I absolutely love this leather! I got caught in the rain the other day and all rain drops apart from one disappeared without trace. The remaining one I dampened with a wet paper towel and that then disappeared too. I've had a nose mark too (sorry, couldn't resist sniffing it!) that was gone in an hour and a small mark from olive oil that also just disappeared. I guess that's why I asked about the saddle oil. Where the olive oil was can't be seen but felt lovely and soft and smooth, so I figured oil might be what I needed... Just sparingly!

I'm sorry that was a typo I meant to say that you can't use just a little bit of oil on a certain area without having a disaster it's an all or nothing type of product
Actually I would not use oil of any kind on it as it can lead to over conditioning and darkening and unevenness
You lucked out with your oil incident I've seen oil stains on barenia quite often and degreasers are used to try and lift excess oil out
Think of the darkened handles on many Barenia Birkins ?
Anyhow in the right hands and with skill you can use oils however I am not recommending it here
You would be surprised to hear how many folks will simply think Ive recommended something as a global treatment and get into a real mess with their prized bag

I try only to recommend the treatments which should theoretically be the least invasive and the most novice friendly or goof proof

I hope I have not offended anyone [emoji178]

Sincerely ,doc

No, that's a great help, thank you :) just out of curiosity, knowing that Barenia is oil tanned, I'm assuming that eventually some of that oil disappears/ evaporates (guessing here) so the leather begins to dry out? Does that mean at some point the bag should be treated with oil? Or would using other conditioners mean that would never be an issue? And will the leather crack like box calf if left too long unmoisturised? Sorry to be a pain... Too many questions!

Hi
Because again I still have folks mistaking my advise and having disasters I'd like to skirt the questions

If you use proper conditioners you will be fine and no need to add straight oils into the picture which I do not advise
I have my reasons truly
Much of what folks thinks is dryness is often wear and those areas will go much darker than the leather without wear so oil again would not be recommended read avoid possible mess from that advice

With a good conditioner the worm areas shouldn't darken up too much so you'll have a more even finished result

How's that ?

Best doc

I totally understand, just appreciate your time, thanks Doc :)

Here's the deal
Oil can darken your bag yes, but too much oil can have your bag leaving oil residue on clothing and so on
Additionally the whole bag can become overly soft which leads to getting stretched out and losing its shape . Additionally, all areas of wear will absorb the oil and go darker that other areas
The hand feel will be different as well
The oil can move in and out of the leather if its not done properly or in excess

If you really want to oil it do so very sparingly
It might be streaky or blotchy but after a week or so it might even out a bit

Also straight oils can weaken stitches

So youve been warned

I think oiling Barenia is best left to the professionals

If you are keen on oiling your bag despite this
I wish you good luck

And mention that Hermes saddle oil isn't the only oil out there, and the saddle baume had seal oil as an ingredient eek

Go to your local tack shop where they sell saddles and see what's on offer and or bring your bag to the local cobbler and see what they have to say about products they sell
Always test a small hidden area first make sure you like the results
When working your bag less is more
You can always repeat application if needed but it's hard or impossible to undue one that's too heavy

I wish you good luck sincerely,
Doc

Thank you Doc,
I really appreciate your time and invaluable advice. I will give it some thought and maybe as you suggested try a tack shop to see if they have a balm type product that is suitable and more easy to use :)

Hi there
Some conditioner should help
It looks like it will look much better afterward
I doubt you'll need to do any color work
A cleaning off of old polish , deep conditioning and finishing with a protective lotion or a nice neutral polish and buffing out should be sufficient for a vintage Kelly
All the best doc
Thanks doc! I bought and paid for her on ebay. I'm so excited! Off to buying products for my first kelly.
