Docride's Hermes Lazarus Thread (can this Hermes be Saved? )

Hi there, wear with dirt on it can sometimes be lightened , however then you have lightened worn areas , the dark handles can be degreased some but it won’t look like original color again will be lightened but not necessarily uniformly. Stains once set are generally permanent.
And that’s the scoop. I hope that was helpful?
Personally a hood cleaning and an interesting patina is nice too.; So long as it’s not dingy with dirt ..,
All the best , doc
Very helpful. Thank you Doc!

In your expert opinion, can the ostrich skin on this Dalvy be saved?View attachment 3834102
It might be fixed by a very skilled restoration specialist ( Hermes might do it but they might not really I can’t say ) however most handbag restoration shops might attempt to airbrush the whole bag with leather paint which might give a more uniform appearance but sacrifice the hand feel considerably.
It’s a lovely Dalvy, I’d personally bring it to an artist / restoration specialist, a good one can greatly improve the look of this bag though I would not expect it would look brand new.
I hope this helps ?

Hi Doc and TPF friends! Hope you've all been well

May I seek your expert advice on a 2012 birkin please? It's chevre mysore, and the corners are quite worn. I've read the chevre threads and some say white wear can never be restored, while others have had luck restoring even rouge chevre, so opinions have been differing.

Is this what's referred to as "worn to the white"? With this degree of corner wear/color loss, do you think this could possibly be restored, or is this an Olsen twin beater bag type of situation?

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Hi there What a beautiful bag! So rare and special! This is an easy fix with some color touch up I'd say go for it !!!
All the best,doc

Dear docride, I love reading your advice and seeing the transformations.

I saw an amazing lizard Kelly restoration you did earlier, where the corners and edges had color loss, but it looked good as new after. It was like magic!

Do you think this lizard Kelly can be saved, please? I’m not sure if the skin is too dry. The handle has been replaced.

Wishing all a great weekend!

Thank you dear @docride for the great advice! It’s good to know the bag can be touched up with color. I did some research after reading your comment and just learnt that 35 birkins in chèvre are indeed quite rare, and mainly available by SO. Very interesting indeed!

Hello Doc,

Would you have any suggestions what to use to condition Peau Porc? And what to use to keep it clean? My Calvi has a decent patina now but just need to know the maintenance part of this heritage leather.

Thank you!
Hello, @Norm.Core , and thank you for asking this question as I would like to know the answer as well! I love my peau porc Hs, and want to make sure I’m maintaining them correctly. I hope that @docride answers you soon!

Hello there ,
A very grande Dame of a Kelly there. The skin. Looks very delicate at least in some key areas .it’s possible it can be saved but equally possible it might not hold the stitches required to save it . Some areas will remain in a cracked or torn condition even if other areas can be addressed. Question being if the bag can have its handle and handle bases and tirrette ( clochette strip) replaced would you still be happy with the possibly delicate nature of the main body of the bag ? Is vintage possibly shabby chic the look you are going for ? Can you have the bag you want in the price point you want after the repairs and or if all repairs aren’t possible?
All things to consider.
Without touching this bag I have to partially guess condition with the information the photos provide.
Is there a return policy ?
All the best doc

PS I just accidentally tried to ask you the following question on the leather care rec’s thread, only to see that you said it’s for reference only and that you wouldn’t be answering questions there. Would you perhaps, if/when you have time, be willing to answer my question here? Screen shot of my Q from the other thread below:

Hi @docride, thank you for the detailed response and thought-provoking questions.

My suspicions were that the "grande dame" is quite delicate, which you've also confirmed. I don't think I would be happy with the bag if repairs are not possible. That's a really good point that I had not really considered (especially since "shabby chic", as you so tactfully put it, is not quite my natural style). There is no return policy, so I think I will pass on this. Thank you again!

Use a soft pink pencil ✏️ eraser !
Do not use a magic eraser you might have driven the tarnish into the skin
Good luck
