Hi Doc.
I just purchase this Hermes Birkin HAC 28 togo gold bag which is my dream bag. I really love this bag but the cracks on the handles and leather flaking on the side straps are my concerns. Without replace the handles, I'm thinking of asking the spa to seal the cracks then use the twillies. If I do that, how long the handles will last until it will fall apart? should I keep or return the bag? Please share your opinions.

Hi there !
I don’t think Hernes will seal cracks … I’d have them check that this bag hadn’t been painted or touched up by non Hermes craftsman before deciding to keep the bag . As you know , Hermes won’t replace handles if the bag has already been worked with color work or stitching on by an aftermarket craftsman . Just a thought.
Factor the price of handle replacement into the bags price and see if the price is still a good one for the bag or if it makes it not such a good deal.
Very best of luck
Doc

Good morning Docride,

I recently my purchased this chevre birkin. The only blemish is this tear/lift in the leather. Do you have a recommendation for what I could use to prevent the leather lifting and damaging further? Thank you in advance for any advice.

Hi what a pretty bag
Hermes night fix that for you or a trusted luxury handbag restoration shop. They will take some leather glue and tack that down very carefully so as not to get glue where it’s not wanted.

Hi Doc & all!
I am interested in this vintage box kelly and although love the ageing of the leather was wondering the appearance of these wrinkles are early signs of dryness, eventual cracking. it looks like it's all over where the bag folds etc. would appreciate your help...if it's salvageable or can be maintained/fixed.

I'm new to box leather and haven't found enough information on wrinkling- please help.

Hi Doc!

Thank you for all you do - I have read thru more than 80 pages of your generous wisdom!

Do you mind taking a look at the condition of this BBK pls? The bag looks in good condition generally…

Howevuuuuh…

1/ There are two deep holes on the corners - is fillable at spa?
2/ The sangles appear v dry but the rest of the piece seems okay - is this salvageable with your methodology?

Many thanks in advance.

Please never tire of us!

Hi there !
What a lovely box calf Kelly. From the photos , yes looks like it has gotten a bit dry at some point , conditioning may help. The wrinkles will not smooth out though.
I have a nice youtube video you can watch for evaluation of vintage Birkin and Kelly bags . Check out my channel below my header.

Hi there ,
This isn’t a home spa project in my opinion. The holes could be filled ( Hernes will not do this) the handle has some cracks ……
Not sure the price point on this bag … you can private message me to chat.

Hi Docride! Recieved this beauty. Does this look like the glazing/finish issue? or the actual leather? how many years would I get to use this beauty? was hoping to pass this on to my daughter one day..

Hi Docride. A quick question. I have a vintage kelly bag that has similar tarnishing/oxidizing as this picture in the attached link (not to this extreme degree) but it is exhibiting these rainbow colors. I have used a sunshine polishing cloth and the rest of the brass is fully polished back to the deep gold color, but there are small areas that are colored in this way. I tried looking up how to get rid of tarnish, but all the usual remedies are listed, but nothing specific on this type of tarnish.
What is this? Why won't the polishing cloth rid this? Is there anything else that can be done?

Hi @docride
Do you think this Barenia Birkin could be cleaned up, or are the dark stains likely permanent? I am happy with patina but dirty looking marks, less so.
Reading through this thread it sounds as though dark marks are likely not to come out of Barenia once set.
Thank you so much for this thread!

Hi there, wear with dirt on it can sometimes be lightened , however then you have lightened worn areas , the dark handles can be degreased some but it won’t look like original color again will be lightened but not necessarily uniformly. Stains once set are generally permanent.
And that’s the scoop. I hope that was helpful?
Personally a hood cleaning and an interesting patina is nice too.; So long as it’s not dingy with dirt ..,
All the best , doc

Hi @docride !

I was wondering if you’re still selling your cleaning/conditioning/polishing kits online and where I could find them. I just got a very vintage box Kelly and would like to treat it. Thank you for this thread!
