Wow different look in these photos
Color now looks like brique in box calf
So is this orange brown brique ?

Got a really good natural light photo ?
Best doc

I can’t tell what color it is based on the pics. Both sets of pics show different colors, but it does look like the same bag with same marks/stains etc. Seller just said it’s brown Chamonix. Seller probably not sure of the leather and color too.

Hey Doc, long time fun. Have read all your replies in this thread and learnt a ton!

Could you please help to review this bag. Could it be saved? By H spa? Is it worth buying?

Hi Cathy
It’s a cool vintage Barenia and toile bag looks sturdy enough
The handles could be degreased (dont know if H does that though)
The corners are going to remain worn looking
The toile could be cleaned up some might not end up perfect.

So you can have a cool distressed but cleaner looking bag to use.
All the best doc

I’m leaning toward it being brique box calf.
Does it look dry ? Probably
Is it worn and with color loss? Definitely
The stains are most likely not going to clean off
Stitches on the upper edge of the side panel can be restitched or left be ; at this time this does not look functionally significant
If there are no cracks and the price is good. And you like the bag for its cool funky chic
Go for it.
A pro could make it look better although not brand new .
Al the best

Is the color more orange than gold brown? Thank you so much for your response!

If it’s brique which is suspect ( but honestly it’s a shoot from the hip guess because the photos show very different colors) then it’s a brick color orangish red white some brown thrown in there. But honestly ask for a photo outside in proper day light. I’d prefer to see its actual color rather than hazard to guess and have some knuckle heads going on about how doc doesn’t know her colors or leathers or some such thing
I think your main question is is it functionally restorable ? Answer is yes from what I can see (suffice to say this isn’t like having the item in hand )
Will it be cosmetically restorable ? I think probably no (this is definitely not a DIY home project ) unless you have a highly skilled and trusted professional to take the bag deeper than the darkest stains .

@docride hi Doc! Hope you are well!

Just wondering when applying H saddle balm on barenia, do I need to worry about the white stitching to be graded and hence try to avoid the stitchings? And is it the same circular motion a la applying black rock on box? The barenia is a bit dry and I ordered the balm and would love to do it myself. :)

TIA!!!

Best,

Hi there
Hermes saddle baume is not a first choice for barenia which you think might be a little bit dry
It’s over kill and could overly darken and overly soften your bag even leaf to the bag loading it’s shape and it stretching. Great caution should be used for those reasons.
Additionally, afterward the bag will might look blotchy and uneven for several days before evening out more or less.... so it could be stressful....
A lighter hand would be used and in circlilar motion yes.
Take care greasy oil and or greasy products are not recommended to drench wax coated stitches the wax can dissolve and stitches can be weakened to some degree(occasional exposure during normal up keep to a bag which isn’t really old should be ok).
The product Saphir for greasy leather would be a good choice for very dry barenia , saddle baume for absolutely scary very old and dry barenia.
How about you show me what is making you feel your barenia is dry? There may be a much easier and or better option than the above . All the best doc
PS> There are other options and recommendations in my Hermes leather care and recommended products thread also in the Hermes reference section.

Thanks so much, doc! I ended up just sending it to spa and let the craftladies do their magic. Wish we lived closer so I could send it to you though!

I think that’s a great idea [emoji362]
Simple upkeep of barenia is easier than restoration of it :) if your bag is at the needs restoration level send it to the professionals :)
All the best , doc

Yes... I suspected it... but I was just reminiscing how much fun I had while restoring my old good box gal back in the days with your help, and thought I could recreate that! I just sound like an old lady, but those were the good days! :)

Miss you doc!!
