This bag will always have an Olsen twins vibe. If you will enjoy that, great (I have a bag like this, not quite as damaged, and I do carry it when I want that feeling). A new handle isn't going to fix the body, you'll end up spending an easy $2500 on spa with everything this bag needs, and you might as well have purchased an older bag in better shape.
Thanks for your response! I received a quote for $690 for a new handle and new tabs to attach the handle from another repair company (I wouldn't go Spa route for this I think). They didn't seem terribly concerned about the cracking, but I'd be interested to see what docride thinks, if the cracking is terrible and makes it too far gone. The seller told me they'd take $1,400 for the bag. Worth it?

Well, with a non-Hermès repair of course you can never take it to Hermès spa. You have a very likely chance of the new handle not matching the rest of the bag since the flap is so heavily cracked. I can't advise you what to do, but a couple options:

1) buy the bag, don't fix anything or just stitch the handles, carry it as an Olsen vibe (I have seen people with bags like this and in the right hands it's terribly chic).

2) bag plus repair is over $2K, for $3.5K or maybe $3K you can find a BBK that shows a lot of wear but is functionally sound. For $4-5K you can buy a larger BBK in relatively good shape. Buy once cry once.

Personally I'd go with #2. YMMV.

I am considering to purchase this vintage box leather bag, although it looks a little like barenia to me. It has some dryness and scratching and I would like to see if the H spa can improve it. Do you think the dryness can be repaired? Is there anything I can do at home?

Hi there , to me this looks like Charmonix or bix Nepal or box calf , spa can often help , with the dryness.
How’s the rest of the bag ?
All the best doc

Unfortunately the seller told me there was some mold/musty smell inside so she declined to sell it. I was super excited about it at first. But I don't think I can get rid of the smell.

Dear @docride ,

I found this Kelly 28 bag that has some cracks. Please can it be fixed? Thank you.

Dear @docride ,

I found this Kelly 28 bag that has some cracks. Please can it be fixed? Thank you.

Cracks that you see like this are not reparable … sometimes you can help strengthen an area but generally the answer is no it’s not repairable a new panel might be the only option … personally I think that this is a costly repair and so alters the bag you lose some of its specialness . Additionally it’s expensive and you wouldn’t have your bag to use while waiting for the repairs. I’d factor all that in to the total price and see if buying a bag in better condition would be a better option .
Best regards doc

Hi Doc! Many thanks for this thread and your videos and advice! I've learned a lot!

I have put a refundable deposit on a vintage 1970s Kelly in box leather at a reputable consignment shop in Paris. They will allow me to inspect the bag in person before purchasing, when I arrive. Overall, this bag SEEMS like a good buy to me, but I would love a gut check. I can PM you a link with more photos (they took a lot! I just wish the resolution was better and that they were in more natural lighting), but I tried to embed some here to point out a couple things I noticed. I'm also curious if there are any other things that stand out to you, that you might recommend a closer look at?

Overall the top handle/attachments look good to me. It does look like there's a scratch or some damage on the bottom of the handle but it's hard to see what exactly that is when I blow it up, due to the resolution.

On one of the attachments for the handle (sorry, not sure what it's called!) it also looks like there is some dryness but not cracking (?) It's slight.

The other thing I noticed is that inside the bag on the top right corner there appears to be wear...or dryness? Or...gulp...the beginning of cracks?

Otherwise I find the sides look pretty good. Top right in the first pic might be some of the wear (damage?) I pointed out above. The lighting does make it challenging to see.

And then the last thing. In the photo of the top of the bag + handle, it almost seems like there is an indentation on top where it buckles? Could that just be from wear? Is it a concern structurally or just cosmetic? The indentation doesn't seem to be noticeable in the other photos.

Let me know if you'd like me to PM the link with additional photos!

Thank you so much - Appreciate your time!!

Dear @docride ,
Thanks for all your help in the past. Please can you advise if this Kelly has been repainted? Am still looking for my first Kelly bag and it’s almost becoming a full time job . Looking forward to your thoughts.

I don’t see the area on the handle base attachment that I’d like to see … you want to check this area for years abd cracks …
Can you ask to see these areas ?
I hope this message finds you in time
