Hi @docride Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge for all of these years. I am a PF junkie for over a decade, but this is my first post and my first H leather purchase. Hope I'm doing this correctly.
I just got a Kelly 35 etoupe. When it arrived I noticed it must have been stored in sunlight. I can see a shift in color from where the sangles were closed on the flap and at the face of the bag. The leather feels good and the bag looks great when it is closed and under flat lighting conditions, but it's noticeable when opened.
It has taken me 7 years to "pull the trigger" I am about as frugal as can be - such a ridiculous comment when talking about purchasing Hermes bags:smile: I adore the bag style size and color and plan to use it as an everyday bag so don't mind a bit of corner wear and a bag that has age, but I don't want to overspend for a bag that has such distinct color shift if it cant be refreshed reconditioned or camouflaged. Also wondering if a refresh will help to reduce the appearance of the puckers across the front over the internal pocket edge. I paid 6600 knowing I would need to take it to the H spa for the flap keyhole? hardware, edges and corner touch up but didnt notice the fading until it arrived - Does this have a significant effect on its value? will this be able to be restored or color corrected by H spa? If H will not, could it be restored by you or someone you recommend? or is it wiser to return it and continue my search for one in better shape for a little more money? Thank you so much for any and all advice, and hope I posted this correctly!
Hi there
I think it’s a pretty bag and you didn’t over pay imo , but the color zoning is probably going to be permanent . If you carry the bag with the straps hanging you’ll notice this abd it may drive you crazy … but only you know if this will be the case . There are other bags if this one isn’t “it” .

Hi @docride, thank you for all the of resources you provide to this forum! I recently purchased a vintage box Kelly 15 and am wondering if it warrants a trip to the Hermes spa. There are a couple of things that stick out to me and while all in my mind seems relatively minor for a 30+ year old bag, I would love your opinion.

1) There is a smile crease in the front, I presume that is normal wear from opening the bag. Are these creases something that the spa could soften or something I should embrace given the nature of box?
2) There are small spots of what seems to be color loss that I circled in red. Honestly relatively marginal, but wondering if a touch up is possible / worth it?
3) I don't know if I am explaining this properly, but on the back sangle, there is a bit of a lift at the corner. Is this possible to have this repaired?

There are also what seem to be a couple of small scuffs / knicks on the leather, but they are so miniscule I can't properly capture it in my photos.

I can't tell how dry the leather is and whether sending it to the spa in it's current state is overkill. Would love again to hear your thoughts. Thank you for your time!
Hi there
This is a super rare bag and you’re in luck most of your concerns are cosmetic and when spaed will blend back into the patina . The little marks are part of the bag’s history. If you love vintage then this Is all acceptable. If what you really wanted was a tiny vintage Kelly in mint condition I doubt you will find better.
Just my opinion. Personally o feel you have found an impossibly rare gem !

Hi @docride, been devouring the wealth of knowledge you’ve shared here(thank you!) and wanted your thoughts on how to salvage my beat up sac a depeches.
1. I’m struggling to tell if this is VN or Chamonix. I was told it was Chamonix but what I’ve read about the stamp tells me otherwise. I read from your thread that is different care for these two leather so wanted to be sure before doing anything.
2. The handle is really dark, can that be fixed? I’d love to darken/patina the rest of the bag like you had done in another thread, is Hermes saddle balm and saddle oil still your preferred regimen?

TY!
Hi I’m having a hard time from your photos identifying can you post some more ? This does not appear to be vache natural , but I have some other questions and I’d need more photos… you can also PM me with those
Thank you

Thank you so much for your thoughts, it is actually SO comforting to hear these words coming from you. I also applied some Saphir Universelle creme per your guide and at the suggestion of another forum member, and the bag is absolutely glowing now--the light smile crease really just blended right back in to the leather and she is buttery soft again. I appreciate you getting back to me!

Hello! I was wondering if Saphir Universelle can treat a small scratch from the nail? I was opening the bag and scratched the clasp my thumb. Is there better product than Saphir Universelle? The scratch is too small to send it to spa. Thank you 👩‍⚕️

Hi guys newbie here! I purchased this k32 in what I believe is vintage VN and when it arrived it had an undisclosed imperfection. The strap that secures the handle to the body of the bag looks to be tearing and unraveling the stitches. This is my first bag and I’m slightly disappointed. I wasn’t hoping to immediately send the bag to the spa but now I’ve fallen in love with the bag and don’t know whether to return it for the lack of disclosure or keep and send to spa.

I agree; return it.
Quite an expensive repair.
Was this not visible on the photographs and you were not diligent ?

Thank you. I attached the listing photo for reference unfortunately it was purchased from a resale website that doesn’t have a team to contact regarding specific items. The listing description and photos were all I had to go off of. As you can see from the listing photo the damage is barely visible and only when I knew to look for it in the photo was it apparent. I will likely return the bag as it was also listed as chamonix leather when it was not.

What a conditioner can often do is help move pigments back into the area that’s scratched (it does not repair a scratch or cut in the surface ). Not all conditioners are appropriate for all leathers
Always test a small hidden area before using products on larger noticeable areas . I hope this helps ?
Additionally I have made a guide so you can check your leather and products which worked on your leather .
All the best

Hi there
Well this must be so disappointing for you .in this case the leather has torn away from the stitches so it not a simple Restitching repair. I would either ask for a discount enough to cover the repairs and the wait till completion or return the bag and find one that does not require major repairs.
Best of luck

Thank you so much for the reply! I wish this wasn’t the case but I will be returning the bag. I wasn’t ready for a bag that needed such a big repair right off the bat. So the search continues…
