Do you wear your designer bag to work/interviews?

As a rule of thumb, I never bring designer handbags to interviews or the first week of a new job. I don't want to give off the wrong impression (even though we shouldn't really care what other people think, lol); I want to make a great first impression based off my character, skillset, and personality rather than my designer handbag and let others make assumptions about my character from there.

I think it depends entirely on the job, the industry, the environment. I am a finance consultant and there are many clients I can think of where walking in wearing a pair of red soled CLs would get me fired on the spot, and others where it would be considered to be a good representation of my affinity for the company.
Personally I stick with a professional, polished but understated purse for at least a first interview, usually a Cole Haan or Furla, paired with plain black Calvin Klein heels (no more than 3 inches) and my smartest (and cutest!) black skirt suit. That is the most appropriate first interview outfit for pretty much any office job in my opinion.
I'm sure that for other jobs there are more appropriate dress codes though!

I really didn't read all of the posts, so sorry if this is a repeat comment!

I really think an overall polished appearance weighs much more than the labels that you have on . . .

I could give a damn less what other people think and if I'm not hired based on the type of handbag I wear, that's not a place I'd want to work at anyways.

It's people's attitudes that need to change.....NOT the handbag.

I used to feel that way - I still do. But while we are waiting for things to change, some of us still need to work!

I wouldn't think that I would (in the hospital environment I'm hoping to work in). I'd worry about "office gossip". That, and it wouldn't be practical, I don't think. But for my part-time retail jobs, definately!!!

Wow, another old thread revived. I can't resist giving an opinion tho.

i feel weird wearing a designer bag to my work, i am working in an office but i dont want people to know that i spend a lot of money on bags/wallets. Is this normal? :confused1: do any of you feel the same?

I think every office is different, both the industry you're in and the people you work with. If you think they would judge you unfairly because you're carrying a designer bag, then don't carry one.

I carry a high-end designer bag now, but I own the company, so... Back when I worked in software I was careful to not carry a bag that was TOO expensive.

If you mean people at lower position should wear less expensive bags than their boss and boss' boss, I don't think it's practical - how do you know the price of their bags? And how do they know yours?

Think about it this way. Bill Gates uses a Ford Focus, does it mean that everybody in MS shouldn't drive BMW at all? If your boss choose to go low key, do you have to give up all your nice things? In my company, even the secretaries make enough money to buy designer bags each year. I don't think they should be banned of nice bags only because the boss prefers to carry a Walmart eco-friendly briefcase everyday.

I think it's a real dilemma, because on the one hand you should stand up for what you believe in and what makes you happy, but at the same time, what if your boss really does start to judge, or even dislike, you for buying designer stuff? I'm still in college, but what if my boss ends up being someone like my parents, who think it's silly and frivolous to spend so much on dressing up? What if they think I'm a flake who doesn't have their priorities straight?

To the executive ladies out there, or actually, anyone who has subordinates, be honest: what do you think of your subordinates with an equally nice/expensive or even more expensive bag than your own? And why?

And has anyone ever had the experience of being judged negatively?

I'm really trying to get this figured out before I screw up at work next year *gulps* Hope you guys can help. Thanks!
