I agree with you. I love designer bags, but for an interview I always bring something conservative and without logos. I think the idea is to look professional, but not overly fashionable (unless you are in the fashion industry I suppose). I would say definitely to bring a good quality bag; and shoes that are in good condition (no scuffs on them, polished, etc.). A classic pump, but not too high or sexy. I usually bring a briefcase type bag (like Coach but leather with no logos) to hold my resume and other papers. I usually don't even bring a handbag.
Remember how Martha Stewart got attacked for bringing her Birkin to court? We all know she can well afford it and makes a huge amount of money so it just seemed surprising that people would even question that she has a bag like that. (Of course, someone at her income level would be likely to own one). I just think that maybe people didn't like to see her wealth outwardly displayed. Perhaps it brought out feelings of jealousy that her bag is more than several months rent for most people. (Don't get me wrong, if you have the money and love it then I am all for enabling).
I think at a job interview you want to look professional, but not have your outfit draw attention away from you.
