I've been wavering on buying my first premium designer bag for years because of the guilt. Its not that I can't afford it, its more that I fear I won't use it enough or that I should be saving money for just about anything else. But I'm thinking this is the year I'm going to splurge. Lots of research makes me feel more comfortable with the purchase.

Go for it! :woohoo:Let us know what you decide to get !Oh, can't wait to see what you get ...

Yes!! i always feel so guilty, but i always put a lot of thought and effort into my purchases that cost a lot. i justify it by saying that the purse is an investment, and i can always recoup my money by selling it. that's why i stay away from the trendy stuff and stick to classics.

Absolutely...in these days when $ is tight, you do feel guilty about spending a substantial amount of it on a bag. I contemplated and almost talked myself out of buying my LV Tivoli PM because of the price, but the hubby justified it by saying that because I work everyday, I deserve to have what I want. As long as the bills are paid and the kids are good, then why not. So here I am a year later and already wanting another. Have my eye set on on the LV Vernis, either the Alma NM or the Brea GM. ;)

I did feel some sticker shock when I first started looking at LV, after buying mostly Coach, but after seeing the high quality and history of the bags, I could mostly accept it. My DH started me with my first LV, a brand new Ellipse PM which I LVoed! And, I started buying more on my own, and even for him! I was lucky to find quite a few pre-loved and limited editions on eBay from wonderful tPFers, so the guilt is officially minimized! :)

Oh...yes I felt guilty when I got a Coach glam shopper tote from my mom right before I was supposed to start school. I would of not felt bad if it wasn't because I for one am not currently working, and my mom is not either. Dad is the only one working, and money is not tight just not spending like we used too, that said when I got the bag..I felt so guilty because my mom got it for me as a school bag. I never even removed the tags from the bag, and or took it out of the shopping bag, only to admire it..lol...Then like about 3 weeks later I told my mom I felt guilty for spending money on it, and went to return it. I felt so bad returning it, as I knew I really wanted it but at the same time knew I was doing the right thing. Dad always takes us to the flea market on Sundays..so we went that week early as usual.....when from far hanging on a tree I spotted this Coach shopper tote in Pop C pattern, I immediately hurried over to the booth, ask the man How much??, and he said $40.00 dls, as mom and me were inspecting it, some lady came over and said How much?? man replied to her..and she looked at me and I said I'll take it.......it was too good of a deal to pass up as it was in pristine condition, and I felt it was like meant to be since I had returned mine. Needless to say the lady was not so happy, as she stomped off.

Yes I feel guilty buying these handbags. I don't normally carry expensive bags. Most expensive is like my $200 Coach bag. Now this year I splurged and got a Chanel M/L because I want to get it before the price increases.

Not to sound rude but I would never look at a handbag as an investment I would look at it more like buying a car. Once you take it off the lot/out of the store & clip the tags off it depreciates. And as far as resale value it is true some designers fair better than others but right now in this economy its a buyers market not a sellers market. So unless you have a really highly coveted HTF mint condition bag you will most likely be selling it at a loss or it won't sell. JMO.

I think "investment" in this context means something that will last a long time and be used on numerous occasions. I'd be surprised if anyone really bought a handbag with the mindset to re-sell the bag at a higher price, or that the bag would appreciate in value over time (except for the very few select brands). That said, I totally agree with your car price depreciation analogy.
