Do you feel guilty about money spent on designer bags?

Yes.. sometimes I look at my handbags in my closet and I feel like I've gone overboard. I mean, even if I use a different bag every day of the week, I'd still wouldn't have used half of them.
That being said, I think I am at the point where I am buying handbags to 'collect' rather than 'use'.. so I think I will be giving it a rest and buy only when there are good sales, or special occasions now.

It is hard we live in a society where we are constantly tempted and there is always something new...I too have been collecting...I hope LV never goes out of fashion and my handbag styles are timeless.

Not really. I don't constantly shop. I buy a few bags per year and that's it. I work, take care of my family and save money from every paycheck. I have donated to charity as well. I think balance is key to never feeling guilty.

You seem very moderate and don't go overboard...good for you:smile1: I am not balanced:graucho:working on it now:smile1:

It would be very nice of you if you decide to donate your money to Africa as opposed to spending it on handbags. I'm sure all the TPFers will be really proud of you.

The fact of wealth inequality is a really complicated issue, there are many historical, political, economical and social factors. Don't push yourself too hard. It is hard and complicated living a life no matter where you are, what you do and how much resource you have.

Same here. I don't constantly shop, I work and we give clothes/ toys to others who are less fortunate.

Sometimes I feel guilty but it's not just with handbags. I feel fortunate that I have a nice home (DH and I both work hard to pay for everything) and live in an area with good schools. I know there are plenty of people that aren't as fortunate.
I try to help locally whenever I can--I donate clothing and furniture instead of selling them/having garage sales. And the libraries around here collect school uniforms so I'm always dropping off polo's and shorts that my sons have outgrown.
I think as long as I'm using and enjoying my things I don't feel AS guilty--it's when things are sitting in my closet unused that is when it bothers me more!:smile1:

I think what can bring on guilt is when one spends frivolously. I did feel quite guilty when I bought my last Gucci because it was way more than I believe in spending. However, I do give back. I've never sold anything. I give all my family's "excess" to charity and they love us! I think it's important to stay grounded and not always "need".

sorry I did not mean to offend anyone...I personally feel overindulgent which is my issue...I am not judging anyone else...just wondering if anyone else has had these feelings...can I delete this thread I think that it would be a good idea

Nope I never guilty about buying my handbags. I spend enough of my own money on students. I've never been a big believer of donating to charities - I donate my time to volunteer like for the children's breakfast and snack programs and at the senior centre.

Lvpug, it is hard not to feel guilty spending large sums of money on luxury handbags and meanwhile knowing there are others that do not have food to eat. I believe each of us wrestles with our moral obligation to the hungry and moreover, do we have an obligation to them? I believe we do. It is easy to get wrapped up in our day to day lives. Thank you for the reminder...your thread is appreciated.

Someone said to me once, "Guilt is a wasted emotion". That has stuck with me for many years.

There are people out there that spend loads of money on their boats or cars or jewellery or whatever that makes their heart sing. For me it is a few select handbags. My hubby and myself both work extremely hard and we like to buy certain things, take family out and travel. I don't feel at all overindulgent over anything that I buy.

I like donating to my local food bank. As for $$$ to charities, I have learned through my research that some, not all, take up to 50% of the money as 'administrative' costs. Yikes! there are a few around town that are as low as 0%. Good thread LVpug!

I don't think you have offended anyone. Every so often we all have epiphanies. You passing on buying a bag isn't going to make any difference. Just stay grounded, help others when you can, donate if that makes you feel better.

Through the years, I have given $20 or so a month to fund a child overseas. I did that long enough for 3 of them to get big and grow out of the program.

There are easy things you can do that make a big difference, but still enjoy your bags, try not to feel guilty. Maybe when you get tired of one, donate it to a worthy cause.

Realistically, I could donate 70-80 percent of my net income and still live well about the federal poverty level. But I don't. And I don't feel guilty about it.

For me, it's all a question of balance. I care about myself, my family, my community, and causes I support. Fortunately, I've been able to keep all four in balance.
