Do you feel guilty about money spent on designer bags?

Just a comment on what you listed that you could get for that $2000 bag ... how about any of this: a new gazebo for the back yard, a good used car to get to work, a color laser printer, a trip to another country (that includes meals and vehicle), a romantic spa weekend getaway, a fur coat, 20 pairs of $100 jeans (if you live in a US state with no tax on clothing.)

Just an observation :smile1:... except for the car, the others are luxuries, as is a purse. I suppose everyone views luxuries differently. Trips are short lived, printers become obsolete these days in about 6 months, jeans wear out, fur coats are good for about 3 months in my part of the country and a gazebo is great if you have a house and spend time outside. For some a purse that price is a life time investment....

I have not bought a $2000 purse myself either ( but I did just spend $4000 on knee surgery for my dog) - but than others would not spend as much as $200 on a purse, ever.

Yes, I agree.... it's all perspective. :smile1:

When I have a new bag and pay a lot of money for it, people keep saying, "If I were you I would go for a holiday, or I would get a second hand car, or I would do this, do that, blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda, etc, etc...". I really try my best not to blurt, "Well, I'm not you".

Heck no! You have no idea how hard I work for my mula and am quite a responsible adult. My mortgage is paid, my bills are paid and I put savings aside. So I want to spoil myself w/ a pretty piece of arm candy, so be it.

Great post!

I don't feel guilty, but I do feel that it is an unnecessary extravagence. I think through each purchase carefully and try to buy only things that will really add value to my life. Nothing is worse than buyer's remorse.

i understand why you would feel guilty, although just ask yourself, "do i want this bag?" "will i be unhappy if i don't buy this bag?" and both answers are yes, THEN GOOO FOR IT!!
as long as you can afford it and you are not being complusive and buying a $2000 bag every month, or season, or whatever your limits are , then it should be fine :)

i know i don't feel guilty :p;)

You're very wise my dear! I still feel guilty because it's an extravagance! Funny but I never felt this way when it was a gift from my father! When I buy a very costly item (handbag) for myself, I always think twice and usually never regret my decision but can't help but feel a bit of guilt. (It fortunately passes since these purchases are very infrequent.)

I used to spend mega bucks on Lvs and then Guccis. Then back to Lvs. The prices are going up each year. I ended not carrying them as my ex bags are all monogrammed and instantly recognised by family & friends. Eyes start rolling and I've been 'branded'. It makes me extremely guilty.
I started looking for non monogram bags and found it in balenciaga. The price is within my income and I really luv the functionality of it. As I cont'd reading TPF, I got to know TOD's and I wanted it too and the price is still within reach and I can afford it without feeling so guilty.
I was waiting for the right colour when I was hit with Hermes Lindy/ picotin/ Marwari. I luv simple casual shoulder bag as it fits into my lifestyle. Yes. it's still within my budget but it's 7-10x of my ex LVs, guccis , Balenciaga & tods!! Now, my guilt is +++. I really want my Lindy and my SA is waiting for me in May. None of my family members wd recognize it & hopefully I can carry it in peace.
