Do you baby your bags?

For those who feel shy about being over-protective: My mother is very bohemian when it comes to cleanliness and her leather bags go rancid and stank after a few years. Lucky she uses inexpensive bags and not Hermes or else it'll be such a pity to trash them. I am her opposite, am always washing my hands. I seldom fall sick but my hands look desiccated. She falls sick once a month or twice a month like clockwork.

MrsOwen great thread! It's always great to hear everyone's differing view points... We are all so different that there is no universal right or wrong answer... The right or wrong exists according to each individual. I would say I am careful about my bags but I am not going to lose sleep over them if there is a scratch on the hardware. Yes, sure I will wince for a second but then add that scratch up to the bag's existing 'character'.

I use twillies on and off and never because it's supposed to protect the handles. I go through my phases of bags with twillies and bags with no twillies. I don't use any bag charms because I like the look of my bags without them. Who knows in the future this might change and I might start liking bag charms? All I know is I have learnt never to say never otherwise I would have to end up eating my words [emoji28]... And I promise you they don't taste that good [emoji57]

I use bag inserts because I am OCD when it comes to organization. It never occurred to me that it's to protect the inside of my bags [emoji15]... I just like being able to have everything neatly organized so that I am not fishing into my bag not being able to get to my things.

I rip off the plastics off of the hardware of my bags and bracelets as soon as I get them, just like a bandaid... The more you think about it the more you stress[emoji12]
Bottom line you live once. Do what makes you happy and keeps you sane. Who is it to say it's right or wrong? You and you alone have that right. Enjoy every second of what you have. And oh yeah if taking my B to the grocery store is what makes me happy I am so doing it, stares be darned [emoji41]... I have my days when I want to go incognito and then days where I have my 'I don't care' attitude out in full display .... My bags and accessories for the day reflect my mood completely [emoji12]

I think you may be my long lost bag twin! I was reading this nodding my head at every sentence!

Yes , I completely agree with you on not letting possessions dictate your life. And it's very cool to be casual about expensive bags .... I love that. I just have a suspicious view about floors. And I will go to great lengths to avoid putting anything on them. Maybe it's because I have a yorkie. They say they are never truly housebroken.

Not wanting to veer off topic, but since you brought up pets .... I also have a (perfectly housebroken) dog and a few cats, and I always tell people not to bother taking their shoes off in the house because with pets, it's a losing battle anyway! My house is generally clean (we have a service come every two weeks), but I don't want to be a control freak. I wash my hands a lot and there is no "2-second rule" in my house -- anything food that falls on the floor goes into the garbage. But like you, I don't put my bags on the floor if I can avoid it. Wonder if there's a connection between this and having pets? :p

It may be totally off topic...but since i mentioned in my earlier post....here is a photo of a bag my mother in law was given on her wedding day. Then she gave this bag to me before she passed away 6 years ago...she had kept it in pristine condition. Its about 53 years old. I love it!

Bags on the floor?! I AM KIDDING, of course! Lovely bags babe.

I put my bags on the floor-- but never on counters where food prep takes place (yuck!) --figuring that's what the feet are for [emoji51]

I pay more for H so I can use the crap out of it and still expect longevity and for it to age beautifully regardless.

That doesn't mean I don't respect my bags, and just because people baby their bags doesn't mean they don't enjoy or use them either-- it's a false dichotomy to suggest otherwise!

I AM A BABY-er! If wearing and using bag brings joy to you, keeping it pristine brings joy to me! A member mentioned earlier that there is a certain amount of coolness with the nonchalant use of a luxury item which I always, always try to pull off. At the end of the day, while I was acting "cool" my brain was telling me "do I look cool enough to not care because all I wanna do is make sure this baby doesn't get hurt/dirty/touched."

I hate it when random people touch my bags. I find this particularly rude. I dont know where your hands have been! This was a problem for me before with nosey co-workers but I found this particulary alarming and annoying with SAs. I always ask permission from the owner first before I touch a bag, even if I know it doesn't cost more than $100, out of respect. Unless a bag is on a store display shelf, that is why it's there, this should be the only time bags are touched by random people. So, my message to the SAs that plan to do this, (I know they are not here) ask permission from me first or wear your store-issued gloves! My SA knows better, this is not her or anyone from my home boutique.

Recently, I put my brand new Gris Mouette B35 on the marble (or tile?) floor at The Rotunda Neiman Marcus (afternoon tea) for less than 10 mins... I couldn't do it! Initially, I thought, it has plastic on it's feet. Then I thought, well, what if the leather touches the floor? Good thing I remembered I have a reusable bag so laid it like a picnic blanket and put my B35 on top. We were at a corner so I know I didn't make a spectacle. After the restaurant, my sister and I went to our go to our favorite place when we can't find anything we like at any Union Square boutiques... Nordstrom Rack, where there are always treasures to be found! Lol! I put a pair of shorts that I bought in my B35, which was so uncharacteristic of me, but it felt right. I even forgot to take it out for a few days. That goes to show, B35 is roomy. Lol!

I would not carry my bag like that lady at the supermarket because I always wanna look cool, but one way that works for my neutrotic behavior towards my bags is by hooking it on my son's stroller handle. I feel like I am able to protect it more because it is closer to me and I keep my eye on it every so often.

I wanted this post to be a candid recollection of my latest experiences so I'm not gonna enumerate all the things I do for my bags (keep in box, keep stuffed, lay on it's back, etc, etc, etc.) because I do pull all the stops but a few things that I thought of doing is climate control. I dont own and exotics and I live in the Bay Area (California) so I dont think it's necessary until I do a full on research about that topic. Another thing I haven't adopted is Lexol wipe. I've heard about it but always procrastinate in buying.

With all the babying, my bags have been through unavoidable circumstances like rain, water spillage, hardware/leather scratches done by me (unbeknownst) and others, leather dryness, etc. My bags and I, of course, survived these ordeals, but did it hurt like hell? YES IT DID! Every inch of my soul for days on end.

To each his own.

I have large house dog.
And an outdoor turtle.

Have set bags beside both, to take cheeky posing photos.
On floor. On ground.

But, would not walk off & leave bag there.
In case turtles steal lipstick or coins.:p
