Do you baby your bags?

I do baby my bags a bit, but mostly through storage. I like bag organizers in clemence bags to help maintain structure and for extra protection. I do take all the plastic off because I want to feel like I'm fully using the bag, but I put my bags back in their dust bags and use the original stuffing as well. I will put my bags on the ground if that is easiest, even when I'm out, though my preference is to hold them or set them on chairs next to me.

On the other hand, I absolutely do not baby my fine jewelry. I stack my Kelly bracelet and let it rattle around and get beat up without a care, but will ever so delicately place my Picotin back in the dust bag with stuffing to prop up the handles, hah.

Yes and no.

yes, if you consider the following care ( what I consider proper care and maintenance) to be a form of babying lol

I am very conscious of proper storage of hand sanitizer, moisturizer, ball point pens, and water bottles, and I prefer that all of these things not come into direct contact with my bags.

I strongly prefer that my bag not be on the ground, and won’t put it down at all unless I have to do so, and it’s sellier with metal feet. No bags would ever be placed on public floors like restrooms, restaurants, etc. No bags ever go into my bedroom or on my bed. Bc I consider them public facing items, like shoes or coats.

My bags are babied in that they are maintained properly. My heritage leather Box kelly bags are weather proofed by @docride to withstand some rain and snow, though I do not take them out in very heavy rain fall. No change in texture or feel, and I am careful to wipe rain drops off. Docride also restores darkened handles and interiors. I also spa and deal with hardware issues at Hermes, but the TPF general rule is not to have any outside work done if you wish to have no issues with acceptance to H spa.

But, no, I do not baby them in the sense that my storage and use of these bags is relatively carefree. With what I consider proper care, I simply use them as bags.

I do load my B30s and my remaining B35 with heavy items like books, electronics, and art supplies. I used to carry two or more wine bottles in my HAC 32. I do not carry such heavy things in my kelly bags, bc of excessive weight on the spine, and I typically strap kelly bags under a latched flap. I hand carry these bags to prevent wear and tear on my RTW, which I do baby.

My noir smooth barenia B30 (and my Fauve barenia HAC 32, before I rehomed it), and swift bags are also treated by @docride, and they function as rain bags

I don’t really use bag organizers. I do not use twillies to protect handles.

I store them upright, no dust bag, though I sometimes stuff them with extra dust bags if they slouch and don’t stay upright on their own. mainly bc I don’t want them to tip over, rather than any issues with slouching.

I definitely baby my bags as much as reasonably practicable.

These are treasured possessions of mine, and given that I'm not a HNWI, I definitely have to save up to buy these bags, which makes me more loath to be lackadaisical towards them. I might take a different view if I have quite a few of them where I can have a designated beater bag in each model.

But at the end of the day, they are still bags, and they need to serve their purpose. I'm not too fussed about patinas, and the concomitant scratches or wear and tear that comes with a well-loved bag, but I just do my best to keep it to a minimum where possible.

Due to the fact that my Birkin 35 and Mini Lindy are my two absolute favourite bags, I try to preserve them as best as I can.

1) I am not particularly a big fan of slouching, but my favourite leather is Clemence (I'm a sucker for punishment, go figure...). Consequently, I use bag pillows, in their dustbags and felt, in the original tissues and boxes when I store them.

2) When I am using the bags, I use bag organisers in the bag to preserve their shape as much as possible, and also to prevent the bags from opening up a portal to the netherworld when I need to dig through the bag to find something.

3) I always bring a reusable waterproof nylon bag with me, to ensure that the bag is protected 1) in inclement weather, 2) on public transport, 3) in a crowded restaurant where I might have to put the bag on a bag hook on the edge of the table or in the last instance where I have to put it on the floor, and 4) anywhere where I feel the need to keep a lower profile.

4) I am cognisant of colour transfer when I am carrying a shoulder bag, so I plan my outfits accordingly to avoid this.

This is a yes and no for me. All my bags are in their dustbags and/or boxes when not in use. In fact, I haven't seen most of my bags for a while since I've shoved them all into my closet. (I probably have around 75 bags or so ranging from Burberry to H.) I have a few throw-around bags that I either bought pre-owned, or used over a long period of time. My brand new from boutique H bags are still handled delicately and with extra care. I once attempted to use OrangeShield on my K25 hardware and failed miserably. I ended up just ripping it off and leaving it as is. Also, I've decided to keep the original stickers on my bags from that moment on. I enjoy collecting bags. Keeping them (90% of my bags) in mint condition is a major part of how I enjoy my favorite bags. That being said, my used bags get used all the time.

Great bump @Meta! I have read the entire thread, it’s so interesting. It’s a peek into how many of us live and care for our things and enjoy the world. It reminds me of an old HGTV commercial “you know you want to look” :P

Yes and no.

I am careful but I do not baby them and cry if I get a scratch. Just generally avoid water or creams, and dark clothing with light bags.

But also, I store them with the inserts (all MaiTai and some stuffing inside to keep the shape).

I do have a 'beater' Evelyne and Kelly. My K32R in Vert Maquis travels everywhere with me and it still looks great. She looks used but not abused.

Hello @Prada Prince! Loved reading your post - many of us here don’t have dozens of H bags, work hard to earn them, and we treasure each one. We all take care of them in our own idiosyncratic ways, and I love hearing from each of you!

I’m with you - I take reasonable precautions, but I use each and every bag I have, H or otherwise. Like you, I use organizers or inserts - primarily for gentle shaping of my bags as I’m not a “floopy slouchy” kind of girl. :P Although like you, I don’t want anny Epsom leather even though it maintains structure so well, I love Togo, clemence and my all time favorite, chèvre.

My favorite line in this thread is yours, and I laughed out loud when I read it “I use bag organisers in the bag to preserve their shape as much as possible, and also to prevent the bags from opening up a portal to the netherworld when I need to dig through the bag to find something.”

I sometimes wonder how when I have such a limited space in which to find an item I KNOW is in my bag and likely in a pochette, I cannot find it! It must go through the portal for a moment and return after I’ve fussed about with my phone flashlight. I also think in winter my coat pockets must have a smaller but just as effective a portal. Thanks for the laugh - and the most ”reasonable” explanation I’ve heard for losing things in one’s bags.

Pochettes, I must admit, are also with me in every larger bag, inside the insert (MaiTai’s are my favorites) for further protection and organization. I also happen to love tiny pochettes, inside medium pochettes, inside larger pochette’s, inside my bags (what a geek). During the pandemic, I discovered LV canvas (knew about it before of course, but I started searching for non-leather smaller pieces to carry when I had to go out due to hand sanitizer flying about). LV is certainly a pochette maker of every imaginable size, color, print etc. and I find their pochettes extremely functional. I’m one of the few here seemingly that needs to carry pens and pencils. To protect my bags, I zip writing utensils, though NEVER a fountain pen! inside a canvas pochette from LV, that then goes into my insert and I remove the pochette and keep it well away from my bags when using. If dog forbid something leaks, the canvas pouch will contain it (as will the insert) and I will find the leak some distance from my bags. I’m ok sacrificing a small canvas pochette from LV, but not my gorgeous H leather. Never had a leak yet!

As far as storage of my leather H, I am one of those folks that loves to see my collection, both to enjoy the craftsmanship even when not using, and so that I will see what I have and use and rotate more often. My B’s and K have a “vented” lucite storage box for light and dust protection each, other bags are displayed elsewhere. I do use either a bag pillow or my inserts to maintain shape. My LV bags purchased during the pandemic are also out, and I often switch to canvas when I know there might be a foreseeable mess (eg when getting my hair cut and colored - though I protect canvas as well). I don’t worry about dust too much on non-H handbags, as I dust frequently and we have a serious ventilation system that removes lots of dust from the air. If I put all my bags in a dust bag, I would forget some and not use bags I love very often. I know some here use a “cost per wear” metric, but for me that matters less than “do I love my bag“ and even if I use less but some, I’m good with that. I take joy in handbags, my obsession started at 5 with a snappy little top handle number made in red patent leather that matched my red patent Mary Jane’s :P I was a goner at that point!

When I‘m out to eat or to coffee or drinks with a bag, I try to put on a seat beside me, or if a booth it’s easy to keep off the floor. I have a small silk scarf my DH got from a friend that doesn’t suit me to wear, I carry it in my bag so I can throw it over my bag for protection from me primarily. I don’t put my bag on the floor except in my own home, and if I travel with an H I use a le pliage tote with my H inside for the travel bins at security, or the floor under the seat. I don’t like my bags in overhead compartments as I use the contents during flight and I want them very nearby. I also have a Clipa ring if I want to hang the bag during a meal.

I love and use twillys sometimes, I love H silks and it’s another event to enjoy silks. My clochette (if the bag has one) is usually on my bag, but never a swinging lock or bag charm. I do travel with the lock and key and if out with a shoulder bag for sightseeing or shopping, i cinch and lock the bag for security. Otherwise locks are in their dust bags at home. If I’m carrying an Evelyne, it’s always crossbody in front as it’s open top. But I also carry an evie tpm for dog walking and love the utility and the nice feeling that I use my H for my real life as it is every single day (though I do put it behind me when cleaning up after my dog to avoid a yucky accident!!)

Finally, I remove any/all plastic from my hardware immediately once a bag is truly mine, except from the feet of any footed bag. I love the gorgeous hw, and I simply wipe it with a cloth used for cleaning eyeglasses periodically. The minor scratches don’t bother me. They are my bags and I love using them!! I don’t treat any of my bags with anything, and haven’t needed a spa yet. Guess I baby a bit, but I’m ok with that. I’m careful with all my things.

Wow, what an interesting thread. It’s provoked lots of thought about all the things I do both to enjoy my bags, and to keep them in good condition. How fun to hear from others and if there’s anywhere to talk about this stuff, it is here on tpf!! Happy Monday all!

Love the red bag and Mary Janes image! I hope you wore those shoes out of the store the day your parents bought them

I treat all my bags as valued wardrobe members but that being said, no one is babied. And, I carry a fountain pen in mine 😜. I also have a varied assortment of le sportsac pouches from back in the day that I use for separation/organization.
You are very fountain pen brave!! Good for you.
