Diamond studs - sizing help

Just my 2 cents.
Skip Cartier/Tiffany...no stats up front, no sale. This goes for any retailer.
2 tcw (slightly smaller .87-.97 each stone to save a bit of money and look the same), G/H (will face up white), VS2/SI1 (for earrings) is good enough. As long as the cut is ex/ideal those babies will sparkle! AME can help you with the diamond stats.
Also consider a 3 prong martini setting.....................
"Diamond shrinkage" always sets in for most people...trust me on this. When in doubt error on the larger size.
Keep us posted...how exciting!
Thank you for your time xx

Agreed! I know there is a trend that bigger is better (watches, diamond studs) but to stand the test of time, as they say, the size you have it great. If you want to go up to 1 carat, that would be okay, but not much bigger than that to have them suitable for decades to come.

And Ame is great. Wish she was my next door neighbor or something!
Haha! I wish she same was my next door neighbor too lol
Thank you for the feedback. I am being a sponge right now and soaking in all the advise here.
I agree with posts that for diamond studs, cut is more important than color or clarity. You want the earrings to sparkle and excellent cut will give you that.

I personally would not buy diamond studs from Cartier or Tiffany, not worth paying premium for the sake of the brand name.

I have 1 carat for each ear and love the size. Not too big and not too small.

Good luck. You have great resources here.

Thank you! I actually saw the martini setting today on bluenile and it looked really sleek. I am strongly considering it. Thank you for your time Moirai xx

Darn... I just love you Ame xox

Certainly, let me know if I can help when you're ready.

Oh lawd...I am a not a great neighbor! Well, I mostly just ignore everyone that lives near me, or at least the ones that currently live near me. At least now we have a lawn service so the pain next door won't constantly nag us that it's not to his insane standards.

:roflmfao:

I strongly recommend martini settings!
Agreed!

One quick comment on the martini setting...make sure you actually try them on first. I loved that setting too, but it must be how my ears are pierced, because when I tried the martini setting on they made the earrings look lopsided....just weird. I had to get the basket setting and I love it.

I had the same problem and had my jeweler adjust (bend) the post a bit and bought elephant backs...perfect now.

I have two sets of diamond studs.

One is set in 14 k yellow gold - round cut and has a total weight of .74 carats. They're smaller but are good stones.

The second pair are set in 18k white gold - princess cut and a total weight of 1.2 carats. This pair are really quality stones.

I love both but honestly rarely wear either. I'm so afraid of losing them because I have lost earrings in the past.

Both were made by a local jeweller who has made all my diamond pieces starting with my engagement ring 25 years ago. The process is so much fun. We pick the stones with the jeweller and discuss settings etc. it just makes every piece so wonderful and gives us a few more memories because we've been involved every step of the way.

No they don't carry the Cartier label but they are quality diamonds and Labels aren't important to me.

I'd suggest you buy the best diamonds you can. Buy what is important to you and most of all enjoy the process.

Bigger is better. You will not regret it.

VVS is not so important in earrings, but IMHO color definitely is.

You can buy from Cartier or Tiffany but if you go with diamonds without the designer name you will get a much better price. Shop around!

I think it really depends on what you think you will do with the stones. If you're always going to keep them as earrings or possibly have them reset one day. I had my mothers earrings set into a dinner ring when she passed. I am so very glad she had wonderful stones. The ring wouldn't be as beautiful as it is unless they were good. For me, size isn't as important as the quality of stone but everyone should purchase what they value.

Personal preference. Size is personal and I don't think high color or clarity is important in a stud unless you plan to reset those stones later into a ring, and even then, debatable. Everyone's got different opinions on that. No other characteristic will impact sparkle more than cut. Don't skimp on cut quality though, ever, that's what makes the thing sparkle. Without well cut, it won't sparkle.

Hi tpf! I've been worried to post this. I've read many threads on this but feel like I needed fresh advice. I had a loss lately and my dh is "treating" me to diamond studs as a pick me up. My engagement ring is 2.9 carat princess. I was looking at round studs so it didn't look like a "set" if that makes sense. I was looking at 1.5-2 total carat weight. I think the martini setting is great however I feel it is replicated with cz a lot!! My question is...do you stick with the same shape diamonds? 1.5-2 do you have pictures of this in ears? Would the difference be that much in size? Price is not the issue. I just don't want them too look "too" large as I am in a pretty modest area. What about for a pendant? What size pendant do you prefer? Please share photos if you have any. Thank you !

Hi!
I'll give my opinions, hope I don't miss anything!
1} IMO shapes needn't match, no need to match ring stone to earrings
2} I personally prefer martini settings. Size is very personal and also may differ depending on your earlobe size. I wear 2 ct. and they don't seem large at all to me. I have normal size ears but don't have tiny earlobes so that may make a difference, also I live in an area where they don't stand out or look remotely large.
3} I'd personally love a 2 crt pear solitaire pendant :D

This!!
BTW, I have diamond studs that are 2+ carats per ear and I agree with Swanky. Mine are in a basket setting, however, because mine tend to tip.
Diamonds also "shrink" over time (kidding but you will get used to your stunning earrings).
I also agree with the pendant suggestion...this is exactly what DH purchased for me following the birth of our first child. 2 carat pear solitaire pendant. It is classic and timeless yet not as common as a round pendant.
My earrings were for baby #4:smile1:
Have fun deciding!

How nice of your DH.

I personally do think that 2 karat studs are kind of large especially if you are in a modest area. I am sure nobody else on this forum will agree with me. Lol.

2ct is fine imo too =)
It really depends on your ears I think, I have tiny earlobes, and 0.75-1ct on each is massive on me. I had a look at the 1ct we have at work, and I just can't wear them at all... likewise with diamond rings. =/
http://imgur.com/TqIfGEA (1.20ct)

Well RBC generally are shinier than PCD, so if you're going to wear it on your ear, and you don't want it to stand out too much...maybe PCD? (I know you said no matching) >.<

75 points and 1ct doesn't make too much difference, there is a difference if you compare them..but yeah. I can take a photo if I'm back at work, but we don't sell martini style ones, maybe not as popular here in Aus? =/

=P Oh, unless you get super good colour and clarity, dw it won't look like CZ, and most CZ has a bit of fluorescent in it.

And as for pendents, I'm really small, so I just wear something small for everyday...but a 2ct pendent isn't bad =P we have 1 at work, and when I tried it on, it was really nice, felt small, probably cause I'm not used to wearing anything with a solitaire.
