Designer Brands You Will Never Buy

I think we're definitely on the same page. There are a number of "real" upgrades when moving from contemporary to premium. But the intangible brand power / cache is really making up most of the gap in price.

On your second point about materials, I've been pondering this because I had a strong aversion to non leather bags and felt they were "sub par". That led me to feel the coated canvas bags were a waste of money. And I couldn't fathom why anyone would want something like a cloth Chanel bag. Then I had to ask myself: Well, who said leather is "better"? Tradition? Rarity? Durability? If it's the latter, then a chain mail purse should be better than both a leather and a canvas bag. 😂
For me, I just decided I prefer leather to canvas for the look and feel. I prefer leather to fabric for durability and resale. And I just "can't" on the vegan leather bags. But that's me. If someone else is happier with a bag made of hemp, tweed, canvas or ... great for them! 👍 They may look at my leather bags and think "never"! 😊

I always go for leather because I think it ages so well, particularly if its well cared for. There's just nothing nicer than a smooshy well loved leather bag. Pleather and fabric on the hand just deteriorate with age, and that's why I'd never choose them. I'm on the fence though about LV canvas, having seen some pics on here of venerable bags still looking great.

DB is, and always will be my first love, so I GOTS to take up for 'em. There are some DB bags that may conform to your descriptsion Marisaa, however, I would say the majority do not, especially the Alto Line [which is my personal favorite] no ducks [even though I LOVE the ducks], gaudy contrast stitching etc. Just beautiful DB craftsmanship, and I've attached pics to show examples.

DB quality is unparalleled, and I will put it up to any [yes you read that right...ANY....luxury brand]

Absolutely stunning. "Heads over to the D&B website."

Alto line is farely new and it is very expensive , I am talking about traditional db. That is the problem. Forgot to mention bloody red lining with practically everything... Oh.....
To be fair, just like most handbag lines there are different "levels" to appeal to different markets. D&B does have a wonderful luxury line that I've never personally owned but can see the value in them.

They're quite exquisite and can rival most Italian premiere brands.

I think some design bags are popular only because they are design bags.
My friend loved Kate Spade bags until she found out Liz Claiborne changed their name to Kate Spade. I still think their colors are great.

See my mum wore Liz Claiborne for years back when it was quite high end, then the clothing line got destroyed and finally disappeared and she was devastated. When I told her Kate Spade was the new LC she got mad excited and is now a Kate spade addict. Too funny.

This thread is about the bags you will never buy. Just a reminder. No need to explain why you buy these bags. Alto line a super quality and expensive line in the first place.
Personally, Alto line looks too official to me, not my cup of tea. I do not wear bags in Madame Secretary/First Lady/ breifcase style. They would look ridiculous on me. They require to dress up in suit, pencil skirt and pumps.
Now, when I used to work in business environment I would buy an Alto bag with one click of a button, because of quality and a very stylish look.

Thank you so much.

Alto has been around at least 20-25 years.

I knew at least 15, that's when I got my first.

I was just responding to a post about generalizing Dooney bags, I was just showing you that there are many that do not conform to that. Many ppl get kind of off subject on boards all the time

Thats interesting! Are there any vintage Alto bags? Wonder how they are holding up.... I have one awl hobo and a wallet in black/black from 1997, that bag still looks good. I got this bag from my neighbor, she is a doonista.
I have been looking at d&b website , dillards, and going to outlets( we have no fp store) for over ten years. Bought few bags for my mom and for gifts- mostly awl bags and couple of coated canvas because mom likes white(!) bags. Saw may be half a dozen alto bags in the last three -five years, except last year they expanded alto line dramatically.
See, I am kind of frustrated with d&b, I traded in moms awl satchel thinking to get smth for myself and got nothing to choose. So I ended up buying a xbody in saffiano for mom, this line has matching colour straps. Moms awl satchel didn't do too well. She wore it for 3 years ( rotating with other bags) and awl leather was fine but those light brown straps looked awful.

Other brands I won't buy are Michael Kors and Calvin Klein. Just can't stand smbds full name on my bag.

They seem like old lady bags to me, I'm not young but won't get so old as to carry a DB. My favorite bags are three pocket Phoebe, Maggie and Edie. Then in Kors the med and large 3pocket bags I also love. That's really the only bags are in my "keep" box.
