Designer Brands You Will Never Buy

I can only think of one brand and two specific styles of bags that I can not imagine myself every owning.

Chanel: I have an appreciation for the double flap and a near love for the reissue style. And my god, I'm head over heels for the So Black. It's absolutely my holy grail. However, Chanel is at a price point now that exceeds what I am comfortable spending on a purse. I don't have the lifestyle for it. My non-working life is pretty casual. I could definitely carry it off in my work life. However, I am very aware that in my career, I meet with clients quite a bit and they are 90% young women. They are great girls, but I am very reluctant to display too many overt signs of spending, because I don't want them thinking, "oh perhaps we are paying you too much", or worse that I am over charging them to fund my lifestyle. So, my clothes are pretty conservative, my car is a level below Mercedes / Lexus and my handbags are very subtle in their branding. Maybe when I'm closer to the retirement end of my career I'll look into that Chanel, but by then it might cost more than a new bathroom renovation or my dream luxury vacation.
.
Hermes - see above. Same as Chanel, although far more related to cost and lifestyle. An Evelyne is the only exception, since its functionality and aesthetics are more suited to my regular, non-working life.

Balenciaga - I can only say I will never own one of the City or similar styles. Although it checks off a lot of my requirements. Delicious leather, beautiful colour options, handheld style and a true iconic bag. It is just too slouchy looking for me. I've come to realize, that I really only love structured bags. as a result, I think that particular bag will always be a no for me. I'm not ruling out the brand entirely though, just that particular style.

Edited to add: there are many brands I won't even look at, but I'm not going to list them all, since it would rude and insulting to their fans on this message board. Every brand has its own following for its own many varied reasons. For some reason, it's easier for me to identify a brand that exceeds my price level of comfort. But, I certainly don't judge anyone else in their collections. Ok, maybe I judge *some* of the socialites / celebrities just a little bit.

Welcome to the forum! I enjoyed reading your post, and I can so relate. Chanel bags are so pretty. My life is very casual too. I think the bags are too small and precious for everyday wear for me. I love watching these purses on YouTube, though.

Wonderful post.

I bought a Chanel Jumbo double flap in caviar. I was over the moon in love with her. She exceeded all my expectations. I live in a small town, and I felt uncomfortable carrying such an expensive piece as a daily bag. I never had occasion to use her, so she stayed in her box for over a year-- occasionally coming out so I could enjoy her. Needless to say, I decided to part with her. I didn't lose a penny. I do regret selling her at times, but I can safely say she would have still gone unused and it's been six months. I don't live a lifestyle that could justify that purchase. We all know how expensive handbags can be, and I have premier and contemporary bags alike, but I do realize now it has to fit my lifestyle. I don't want a bag so I can just stare at her. She should be carried and enjoyed.

My other experience is with Balenciaga. I agree with all your points. I had a City and it does fulfill a lot of my requirements, but the slouch did bother me. I sold the bag, but I do regret it and plan on replacing it probably with s smaller size. It might help with my structure concerns.

Thank you for your very lovely post.

Hermes - sorry but I'd rather buy a car for that price

BV - I just don't get it

Chanel - I'm really trying to get with the obsession but it looks old lady to me.

Celine - they all look the same!

Just my opinion!

+1, on everything u said [even though I do love the Phantom, Tie Tote, and Trapeze...but they do look the same lolol]

BV, yes yes yes! The long wallet I got is just way too delicate, after one or two months wear, the edges of the folding part started cracking here and there( I know it happens on all type of canvas or leather goods no matter what brand they are, but straight after few months?? Not good enough). Seriously just a few months. This is my very first try on BV(before I got my wallet, I always have very good impression about this brand, although it doesn't have the best interesting design but the leather goods look quite luxurious to me and always seduce me to try this brand out, okay after this wallet, the hardwares are purposely made like vintage rusted look, but they are so thin and light and doesn't have any engraved logo or anything on it, it looks very cheap made to me(not sure about the hardware on handbags,) The leather where is against cards slot already peeled off by my cards when I just started to use it as a daily wallet. But I keep telling myself that it was must once got famous by something special, maybe the craftsmanship behind this woven style or the historical story of this brand, it's gotta be something special that makes BV as such a luxurious brand. I hope fans of BV can tell me more about BV that can bring me back to this brand or this wallet will be my last leather good I got from BV for good.

You must have gotten a defective wallet because mine wore like iron. I used one everyday for 2 years and it held up really well -- when I consigned it, the store graded it "excellent/very good" condition and it sold quickly.

As for the hardware, most wallets have leather zipper pulls. And while the zipper has a dark finish, I wouldn't call it "rusted".

If this was a recent purchase, bring it back to the store as it clearly wasn't up to normal BV quality.

I bought it few years ago on Net a Porter website, I know BV's previous leather goods are very durable, and the woven leather shines beautifully through years wear and tear, ( I compared mine with my friends' BV Card case that he got it five or six years ago),but what I heard was back to few years ago, BV changed the leather instead of increasing the price crazily like other brands, somehow the "newer" leather which is my wallet, are much softer than the "older" BV leather, and the edges of those woven leather straps won't get smoother after few years worn(like the original leather does). It's hard to describe.

The one I consigned was released 3 years ago (a seasonal color). My new one is about 1 year old and wearing well so far (classic nero). I haven't noticed a decline in leather quality. I also got a messenger bag a year ago which has been used/abused by me and it has held up really really well.

Well then either It cost me almost au$700 after sale price and ended up I got a fake one from net a porter or we are totally talking about different leather here. Haha, anyways it's good to know their quality is not bad as the wallet I've got. Hope other people found our conversation helpful.

similar experience, I have some old BV bags(10 years ) 2 of which are croc leather, classic hobo bag and a cabat intrecciato tote that I've used for the most part of my university days, all are solid and in great condition,
3 years ago I bought a clutch and pillow cross body bag, , the leather of the crossbody bag is totally different to my older ones, much lighter and doesn't look as durable, the older ones have a beautiful patina, and look much thicker,

Maybe I've been incredibly lucky with my purchases. Are your clutch and pillow bags falling apart? Is the leather peeling and hardware rusted? Maybe BV has changed their leather to something thinner/lighter (classic nappa vs newer light calf?) but does it just not *look* durable or has quality really deteriorated?

It's not as durable as it once was, the leather is much inferior,
this is way off topic but I've included some pics to show you, there is a metal thing poking out of the base of my clutch

The leather is peeling on the knot,

I've bought this bag from the store in Cannes almost four years ago, and I didn't use the clutch that much, around the third wear I saw the metal pin,

I still love BV, love the designs , but their is no doubt it's not as it used to be,
