Designer Brands You Will Never Buy

First, I'm going to say that I reserve the right to change my mind 5 seconds from now. Any brand can get a new creative director / head designer who changes the design approach and I could be all over the new line. And I'm going to repeat that me hating a bag isn't personal. It's about the bag ONLY.

Premium Designers:

I still really, really, really hate Bottega Veneta. I have purposely looked at this brand more closely this year because people say they have great quality. Ok. But I find them hideous. I don't like the hippy woven look. And, I don't like and / or are bored by the silhouettes. Unless there is a design aesthetic overhaul, I would never, ever carry one.

I've never been a Louis Vuitton girl. I keep trying to stay open to the brand. But, after several long visits to their boutiques in various cities at different times, I just can't like the bags. I despise the monograms, I refuse to spend "good" money on coated canvas and I'm not moved at all by most of the styles. Now I do see some epi bags that are very attractive and I like some of the shapes of some of the structured canvas monogrammed bags. But, I don't see me ever choosing to buy an LV when there are other bags I love on my hit list.

And, Hermes. This is a head scratcher for me. For the price, I need to covet / love / drool over the bag. But when I see Hermes I think...ok. That's a nice bag. No drooling. I've had the opportunity to see them first hand. No drooling. So I can't see why I'd ever buy one. My jaw drops and my heart stops when I see (some of the) designs by Dior or Gucci. And I truly love (some) Prada, Chanel and Saint Laurent. But I never swoon about Hermes. So, I'd be an idiot to spend 5 figures on a bag with which I'm "ok"

Contemporary Deisgners:

Back to some oldies but badies that have been in my cross hairs for a while and continue to earn my (dis) respect....

I'm growing more discontent with Michael Kors. I try not to fuel the hate because I know there is a place for this brand and I own 2 of them that are true workhorses while being really attractive. But, gosh. MK doesn't even TRY to be original on some of his bags. And, I see them everywhere so they don't feel special. Even though I like my two bags, it makes me want to replace them so I don't have that branding on something I carry. Ugh.

And I won't buy Coach because I'm still mad that the brand does not offer the quality leather goods that it did when I was a young girl and coveted them. Most brands have reduced quality to increase profit. For example, Chanel no longer does gold plating on its bags. I get it. But Coach's quality didn't shift...it plummeted. I have a good friend who insists on buying the bags. Consistently, they break, peel, fray, etc. And the answer from the store is a credit that loops her back into another worthless bag. Blech. They just aren't worth their price and the styling is...meh.

The last brand I have to say I'm not going to buy again is Kate Spade. I've sold every one and I haven't looked back. Not because I don't find some of the bags fun. I'm just "over" having a whimsical bag and I don't like the quality of the leathers used in their mainline bags. This is another brand that I find overpriced for what you get. I don't have the roiling negative energy for KS that I have for MK or Coach. I still see them and smile because they are often pretty bags. They just aren't for me.

Never say never, but If I decide to buy a contemporary designer, only Dooney and Bourke really works for me from a style and quality standpoint.

I'm always about exploring new brands but the ones above just don't work for me.

Very well said. NEVER SAY NEVER!

I have 1 Bottega I bought simply because 1 of my cousin raved non stop about its quality. So I went to BV store n bought 1 of its classic line. But I've carried the bag once only for just 2 hours? Now it's hiding somewhere in my closet.

I told myself to stop looking at Prada bags after 2 bag experience.

Kate spade is ok if I want fun bag.

I never buy any new Coach but have 2 gifted that I never carry but too guilty to sell. But lately I've been buying around 8 vintage coach.

D&B, I only buy their vintage for my vintage collection. None of their new bag appeal to me for the time being.

I may buy MK if they stop copying other design so blatantly.

Told myself to stop buying new Chanel after reading about dropped quality but I must say I'm still tempted.

My first designer bag was LV which I bought just because everyone said LV is so great. That was soooo many years ago. But I dislike the bag so much, so I I told myself NO MORE LV for me at all. But in mid of 2014 I bought a new Speedy to use on vacation in a country that was having heavy raining season at that time, treated canvas would b the best for such a bad weather, a bag that I can just shoved under seat bla bla bla. That was the turning point! I have not stop buying LV after that. In fact, I kept buying new LV plus discontinued or vintage LV. I just can't explain why I suddenly fell in love with LV so much. [emoji23]

I own a lot of brand but mostly only 1/2/3 pieces of each brand except for LV n Chanel which I have more. I love to experiment with different brand that's why my current designer bags covered almost all well known brand like: Dior, Gucci, Fendi, BT, Loewe, Balenciaga, Mulberry, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Prada, Miu Miu, Burberry, MCM, Tods, Anya Hindmarch, Carolina Herrera, Mansur Gavriel, Stuart Weitzman, etc n also Vintage from multiple brand. I still have a lot of brand that I want to try! [emoji16]

Perhaps Ralph Laurent, Versace, D&G, Chloe, Delvaux, Lanvin, Lancel, Launer of London, Proenza, Alexander MQ, Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim. Oh too much to mention all that I need to experiment with. [emoji7] we will never know until we try!

Excellant post. :smile1:

This is *exactly* how I feel about BV & Hermes!

Actually there are some bags from Hermes that I do like- mostly Kelly bags- but it's just that I would much rather buy 2 Chanel bags or even more bags from Bal & Chloé for the same amount of money...

I love whimsical Kate Spade bags (would love a Chinese takeout bag!) but I do not own any atm bc I haven't gotten over the super-preppy-and-annoying girls at my New England boarding school obsessing over them & I hate the thought of me having the same brand as them. Childish, I know

Great response to a great post.

I too love the vintage coach. It's so well made and very affordable. Also, I have a lanvin bag. It's a beautiful lamb skin and I never carry it because I'm afraid of hurting it. I'll never make that mistake again.

Thanks, guys, for the happy comments about my post.

Yes! The Kelly bags are my favorite of the Hermes line. If I ever DID buy one it would be a Kelly but again, like you said, I can get a couple Chanel and a wallet or two and maybe a pair of shoes. So it doesn't work for me.

Slight subject change. I have 3 suede / unbuckle bags that I adore. But dang if they aren't hard to keep pristine. So no more suede bags.

Michael Kors (Everyone has them plus the MK logo dangling off the side of the bag drives me bananas. For me MK stands for Mortal Kombat...yes I was a gamer girl)
Louis Vuitton (Ditto on the ubiquity. Everywhere. Is it real or fake?)
Canvas Coach bags with the 'C's...I like leather Coach bags though
Gucci bags (Meh)
Guess (THAT price for PU bags?)
Stella McCartney bags (see Guess rant)
Tom Ford (Meh)
Hermes (Boring and overpriced)

Gamer girls unite! There is a "What game are you playing?" thread btw, if you are interested.

Rebecca Minkoff...

The bags are actually cute I just feel like I can't turn my head without seeing one! Whether it's on a person or in a store.

That being said. If I saw one I had to have I'd probably buy it!

I always said I would never own a Coach bag (aside from the one my mom bought me ages ago that I gave away to my sister), and now I use one for work. I'm shocked at myself! But it is very classy, not too flashy, and the leather is luxurious. And I can fit my file folders in there.

My advice is to never say never ;)

Not really a brand, but I'll never own any bag in saffiano leather. I bought a Michael Kors Selma a couple years ago without having seen it in real life, when it arrived I was shocked at how cheap the leather felt. I had a hard time actually believing it was leather, it felt so much like plastic. Needless to say the bag went straight back to the shop.

Come to think of it, maybe it's just MK saffiano that feels like this, a friend of mine owns an MK that isn't saffiano and it still feels like plastic to me, just softer plastic. I don't care that his bags are carried by everyone and their mother (if you don't want to own something because a lot of other people own it you'll have a hard time in this society where everything is mass produced), if they were good quality I'd maybe have one myself, but they just really don't live up to the hype for me. There are other contemporary brands that provide much better quality, if that's the price range you're after.
