May I play "ghetto" with you? [emoji4]

I think the internet and its anonymity tempt us to use words we would not use irl. Can't imagine that we would call a certain bag "tacky" or "ghetto" within earshot of someone actually carrying this bag. She might react with a very real bagslap on our head... [emoji6]

Count me in. I'll bring my metallic pleather Guess bag and some cheap Vodka!

:smooch:

I DO!!! I'm Black and from Detroit..that's how we roll in the D baby! I have been right outside of Michael Kors stores and outlets, and my husband has asked me [in the past, he knows better now] if I want to go in, and I'm like HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NAH I don't like that GHETTO SH!T [I told you, not ghetto 100% of the time, but do realize I often tap into my ghetto east side of Detroit roots]....yup, with plenty ppl coming in and out some with mk bags.

People who know I love Gucci call Gucci bags ghetto, I hit 'em with a "yo mama" and keep it movin! we have thick skin...but you have to in the D, it takes much more than calling a bag ghetto to get our gears grinding!

Immigratty, I agree with the spirit of a lot of your posts. 👍

Criminy! I can't believe the back and forth because someone called a brand of bags "ghetto". As far back as I read, no one attacked any individual PERSON. People have hated brands of BAGS. Why all the angst over someone passionately not liking Michael Kors bags?!? I passionately hate Michael Kors design approach in general and own two of his bags in specific. Who cares? This isn't life issues. This is handbags.

If I were to call Hermes' BAGS overrated, elitist and snobby, are their devotees going to take umbrage? I'd hope not.

If I call Chanel BAGS grandmotherly, boring and dated will those buyers start hating me? I'd hope not.

If I call Kate Spade BAGS juvenile, overexposed and overpriced will those fans want me boiled in oil? I'd hope not.

This thread is about opinions on BAGS - not people. And every brand has negative associations (Louis Vuitton - trying to hard, Prada - boring and outdated, brand X - etc. brand Y - etc.) I own several of the bags I just "insulted" despite knowing what detractors will say. I don't care. Yippee for you and your opinion. I like what I like.

Can we just accept that all handbags are glorified pouches made of various stuff to hold our stuff? Owning or eschewing any bag says ZERO about you...or her...or him. If you think otherwise, get some therapy or at least some warm milk and cookies while you rethink life.

And can we stop taking offense if someone doesn't like our precious brand? And, can we stop drilling down on a word. Many posters are using English as their second, third or fourth language - let's give people room on communication in an online forum. Maybe we could even laugh at ourselves for our own over the top passions and perspective on handbags?
Lord knows, I've had to laugh at myself tons of times as I've been certain of one thing and a shiny new purse appears and I now think a completely different thing!

I would love it if we could stop the back and forth middle school sniping. Have a sense of humor. Embrace other opinions. If you hate a brand state it. And if your pet brand was in the hot seat... LET IT GO!!

Well said!

You know, thinking about it, I tend to shy away from MK too, because I have seen his bags wear too easily. That said, one of the bags in my closet now is MMK from 2006 and is one ofy bags with the nicest leather. It is this rich cognac color and that leather could withstand nuclear war, it seems! So brands change over time and you never know when he is going to have the next big thing.

Look at Chloe and Fendi and how they turned around their brand.

+1, PERFECTLY STATED!!

and I'd like to add, ppl call Gucci GHETTO all the time...and it rolls of my back [like a duck, that's why I love ducks... and Dooney haha]

let's see we have the fabulous rapper GUCCI MANE [as far as I know, there is no "Michael Kors mane"]

We have the lovely "2 chains" rapping in his lyrics "when I die, bury me inside the Gucci STOOOOOOOOOOOO" [I don't believe there are any lyrics requesting to have their final resting place be a Michael Kors stooooooooooo]

haha, many associations of Gucci with a touch of ghetto fabulousness, and guess what, I [and every other Gucci fan I know] could give two craps about what ppl think of Gucci, because...I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Gucci, ghetto or not!

Stop being so sensitive ppl. there are REAL issues to worry about [i.e., homelessness, education system failing our kids, poverty, kids going hungry, etc.], who cares what ppl think about your bag!

I think in a thread like this people are always going to get offended. I am now in a stage in my life that I really don't worry too much how other people think of how I dress or what bags I carry. A lot of posts have said they don't get Birkin or would never buy them. That's totally fine with me. I love my hermes and would be very proudly to carry them for the rest of my life. Life is too short to worry about what others think about my handbags!

+1

so many responses [including one right above] say they would never buy Gucci or Dooney & Bourke, those are my two fave brands, have been for more than a decade, and will likely be for decades to come [given I'm still here] I am very brand loyal, mostly because these are the only brands that continue to produce bags that draw me in, no other brand has done that yet...MORE FOR ME!!!

I don't think it's being overly sensitive to take offense when someone is making unflattering "snap judgments" about you based on the type of handbags you purchase. It's one thing to say "I find Designer X's excessive use of hardware on his/her bags tacky." It's another to say "Brand Y's check pattern is so chav."

Ghetto is a slur in this context. so people have right to be offended when you use terms like this to describe things they wear/buy/carry.

:btdh:

I'll shut up now.
Ok! I agree it was offensive. I have just seen those same words used toward LV buyers too. Those opinions don't apply to me, so I just laugh at them. On an opinion threads, I try not to be judgmental of others opinions unless it is done on reveal threads than that is just tacky. I guess people that make those types of statements don't want to make friends. People base their opinions on their experiences and sometimes apply them to everybody. I am glad you love MK; he makes some nice purses. :smile1:

I have a love-hate relationship with LV bags. I simply hate canvas and it's omnipresent, it's everywhere and there're so many knock-offs which i don't mind since the canvas material is cheap-looking anyway. But I do like some of their leather bags.
I dislika LV Alma
I find Balenciaga bags scruffy and shabby- and -cheap looking. I would never have guessed that they are expensive
Dior bags are not up valley and I reckon they are only pretty if you are wearing stilettos and red lipstick
Michael Kors is a no-no, neither is Moschino
I don't like Coach, Rebecca Mincoff and Tory Burch
Tory Burch and Michael Kors use terrible to the touch leather

+ 1. Very true, life is too short n there r so many more important things to care for. So stop worry about people want to say about brand/stuff u love. A lot of people said unpleasant words about LV but that won't stop me from buying more. So what if a lot here (including myself) totally dislike MK?

Feel free to call my LV Monogram tacky, cheap or WHATEVER NAMES. It's my money...I will spend however I please! [emoji7][emoji7]
