+1. Don't worry though. Actually what they say shows what kind of people they are. It's one thing to say 'I don't like MK because of it's design, etc, etc' but to say it's tacky and ghetto?

I agree!

I came on here to say I won't buy MK or Minkoff or Kate Spade, but the reason I won't is because in the past I have had either quality issues (MK), or issues with bags being too heavy (Minkoff or Kate Spade).

I have some friends who are big fans of all of these brands and it looks great on them and works for them.

A purse does not represent somebody's character. However, some items are worn by particular groups of people, and I'm not referring to MK just in general. We all make snap judgments, but we all have to work hard to see people as individuals. I like reading this thread because people can say what they really think. All throughout this thread, people gave their snap judgment of brands and the people that buy them. Yea, some opinions come across as arrogant, funny, thoughtful, and rude but so what isn't that what this thread is about: your innermost opinions about the brand. I find that some people are oversensitive to not favorable views of MK compared to other brands. I hope we can go back to what makes this thread great.

I guess that I'm tacky and ghetto because I love Michael Kors handbags. Love the leather.

I find the LV Classic monogram to be a little tacky, but to each his own. That's what makes the world go 'round.

the poster did not say "every person who carries an mk is tacky and ghetto" they specifically said the logos and designs are tacky and ghetto. Not sure why you generalized that to include your character.

Repeat after me..."I am NOT my bag..."

I don't see why there's so much hate for MK bags[emoji47] it's just a bag that is trendy, great price, good quality from a famous designer.
I used to be Coach girl, and said never buy MK bag, but once I bought 1, then I get it.. I have 5 now. [emoji5]️
They're such a nice & trendy bags, the quality is much better than Coach/ RM/DKNY/CK etc.

I still don't get why these brands are so expensive & why people crazy about them (LV, Birkin, Hermes, Dior)...Lots of my friends bought them though and I have touched, seen, feel the materials...hhmmm... Don't get it...

If you girls are smart, don't waste thousands of dollars on bags, that's a waste...
It's just gonna make haters gonna hate you more [emoji38] or pleased people you don't like.

hate is a STRONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG WORD...so I won't use hate, I will say I have a very strong dislike for MK bags. They just seem so cheap, and gaudy [but many brands have that same issue] and you are right, paying thousands for a bag is ridiculous. I never thought I would do it...but I have, more times than I care to admit. But I find the higher my income goes, the higher the price tag of items that are "too expensive." right now, pretty much all bags except hermes are still in the "reasonable to buy" continuum. I just cannot bring myself to drop $10k plus on a bag just yet.

Yes! I'm having to eat my words on a few brands. I think I "know" them and then I see someone with a little known version and I'm stopped in my tracks admiring it.

I said I'd NEVER buy Dooney & Bourke and then fell in love with bags from a couple of their lines (Florentine and Alto) I actually squealed when I got an Alto from D&B and yawned when I got a Chanel the same week that I returned. I thought I needed a brain transplant but then I just smacked myself and reminded me, it's about the bag...not the brand.

I LOOOOOOOOVE my Altos. Flos are what brought me to Dooney, and Altos are what have made me stay!!!

Balenciaga and celine, they remind me of old lady type, just not my style

yeah, don't get he Balenciaga [city] craze...not a celine fan, but love Phantom and tie tote

Does anyone else know what the current status quo is with D&G and their anti-IVF comments? I know there was a boycott over that-- is it still going on; did D&G retract and apologize for their statements (and in a serious way, not a publicity way)? I love how affordable their bags are, compared to other brands, but don't want to support anti-IVF designers :(

I like some of the bags with bamboo accents that Gucci comes out with, but overall I'm just not a fan of the brand-- don't want any of the bags with the monogram, the logo, or the characteristic stripes. I've seen too many fakes and now it just looks cheap to me...

I also don't get the deal with Goyard. I thought I was missing something so I visited the store in Boston, I still don't get the big deal. I know it used to be hand-painted but now it's all stenciled, if I was told correctly, so I don't see the appeal.

I hate all the current Givenchy handbag designs, except maybe the Lucrezia, but if the brand came out with something I like that's reasonably priced, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it! I can appreciate that their designs are different and innovative in their own right, but they just do not fit my taste.

+1 on Goyard, and I'm not really into GG mono purses, but I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Gucci, they have the best leather designs to me. You can see many in my photo album / bag showcase in my siggy.

I don't understand the HUGE appeal to Louis Vuitton monogram or damier bags. They are everywhere and don't go with many outfits because of the print. The Neverfull to me just looks like a big tote, not much in terms of design there... This is all just me though. I guess I rarely ever seen a mono or damier bag worn with great style so they never impress me, and it seems everyone has one which makes them seem less unique and special.

honestly this thread makes me sad every time it comes across my unread. I own many mk bags, and i am far from tacky or "ghetto". You can say you don't like a brand without making rude comments about those who do. And i genuinely don't always agree with the comparisons of mk & other brands. I think rebecca minkoff's bags are almost exact copies of other brands, but i'd never attack someone for buying one. Please find ways to express your opinions without making total insults to others.

I'll accept that using the term "tacky" to describe the design doesn't imply negative judgments about the buyer's character or class background, only that you believe the person has bad aesthetic taste. However, the term "ghetto" is very clearly meant to be a negative judgment about the types of people who carry the bags.

The term "ghetto" by definition suggests that the person associates the bags negatively with people who live is slum conditions. There is no other reason to use the term other than to make a statement about the users themselves because the term explicitly refers to socioeconomic status and by extension, the aesthetic taste of the people who like the bags (i.e. that they have the same aesthetic taste as the sorts of people who live in impoverished slum neighborhoods--which is presumably bad taste, as "ghetto" is not intended to be a compliment).

To give an example, I find the decor of the late Saddam Hussein's palace to be tacky: http://www.dispatch.com/content/gra...6-art-geberiu4-1us-iraq-camp-4-664453-jpg.jpg

But it certainly cannot be described as 'ghetto'.

I must disagree. I call things ghetto, I call things ghetto that I have and/or do...but I'm not ghetto [at least not 100% of the time]. it's along the same lines as tacky. I think the lv mono bags are ghetto, or the big chanel c's are ghetto [and not fond of the quilt either] but I do not feel like everyone who carries an lv or chanel are ghetto, that is just literally how I feel about the bag, I pass no judgments on the ppl carrying. And those huge MK circle medallions, are ghetto. I have 4 mono [Gucci] bags and Siggy [Dooney] bags from back in my younger days when I wanted to make sure each and every person I passed knew I was rockin' a Gucci or a Dooney [which is ghetto to me], but now, I've grown, and realize how ridiculous it is that I care that everyone knows what brand I wear [which would connote a certain class, or amount of disposable income I have for a bag] and in all honestly, I really don't even like most of the mono/siggy designs, just wore them so everyone would "know" how much I paid, or am able to pay for my bags. Now, I far prefer understated elegance. and having the logo very large and/or plastered all over the bag to me is just ghetto. person...maybe ghetto, maybe not, bag DEFINITELY ghetto.

I don't think it's being overly sensitive to take offense when someone is making unflattering "snap judgments" about you based on the type of handbags you purchase. It's one thing to say "I find Designer X's excessive use of hardware on his/her bags tacky." It's another to say "Brand Y's check pattern is so chav."

Ghetto is a slur in this context. so people have right to be offended when you use terms like this to describe things they wear/buy/carry.

This is a fun place, and I enjoy it. Handbag talk is all frivolous in the grand scheme of things, but I love sharing the frivolity of it all. Some people just take fashion and personal style way too seriously.

I think that MK is polarizing because yes he does copy a lot of popular shapes, silhouettes, and designs from other fashion houses. That can be said for a lot of other fashion houses. Even Target, H&M, and Forever21 get in on the action. I'm just not real sure why he gets singled out so much.

Let's face it. There's really nothing new or innovative in handbag design. The fabrication is the only thing that really changes.

Great point! Every designer is inspired by someone else. Handbags, shoes, clothing, etc. Let's not forget that Zara built its success on being "fashion imitator".

Words have power.
They can blow huge, ugly holes through the universe.
They can start riots & fires.
And they can destroy hope in another soul.
Or they can soothe a frightened child to sleep.
They can heal a sick person's pain to some measure.
And they can plant flowers in solid concrete.
Just depends how we choose our words & why.

We can be "ghetto" together. I'll bring cookies & a paintball gun. :)

Your words are wise and well chosen, as usual [emoji173]️

I'll be "ghetto" with you anytime, as long as you let me bring my coach bags and a bag of Doritos. Cool ranch or nacho cheese?

May I play "ghetto" with you? [emoji4]

I think the internet and its anonymity tempt us to use words we would not use irl. Can't imagine that we would call a certain bag "tacky" or "ghetto" within earshot of someone actually carrying this bag. She might react with a very real bagslap on our head... [emoji6]

Speaking of Guess, I had a pink bag that I absolutely adored and carried when I was in highschool. Only thing was it couldn't last and the handles started peeling every time I tried to carry it. A good friend actually asked if she could buy it from me (I politely declined, lol). I might dig through my closet and maybe find handle covers or twillies for it. :D

[emoji1][emoji1][emoji1]. Mine is from South Beach line. I was so proud of it! Guess is getting better now, though. Their Palmellato line looks good but for that price in Germany I could get a pre-loved Ferragamo.
