Surely you cannot be serious about the two tones being the ugly ducklings. This is absolutely a matter of opinion, I think. I know several people who prefer the two tone - myself included.
Here's mine for reference:

Won't the submariner be too heavy ?
Is it true in the uk you have to wait ages for a SS Daytona ? X
I totally agree & I was quite offended by that remark, I have a TT & so does my DH & my DH will soon be getting his SS after waiting on a list for 3 years, I could have a YG but I like the fact that I can tie in WG & YG because I wear both.
Love your TT by the way & here's a pic of mine & hubby's

this is true. SS daytonas are readily available. i've been looking for one and almost every AD i've called has one in stock or will receive one within the coming daysMy remark was not intended to offend. It simply a description of how the market has largely viewed two tone Daytonas for nearly the last 20 years. Go back and read post #24. I've been actively collecting watches for over 20 years and have owned/own several Daytonas including a two tone ref 16523. From the late 1990s until now, two tones in general were so unpopular that most high end brand stopped offering them. Companies like Patek, AP and VC stopped offering steel and gold versions of their sports watches such as the Nautilus, RO, and 222/Phideas from the late 1990s until now. Only a few brands such as Rolex, Cartier, and Omega and some lesser brands continuously produced steel and gold watches.
The fact that you and your husband have two tone Daytonas is nice, but its the market in general that favored both all steel and all gold Daytonas over the two tone models (its a fact, not an opinion). But the advantage was anyone that wanted a steel and gold Daytona was able to get it often at such are large discount that it often cost about as much or even less than a steel Daytona did (and you were getting some precious metal with the two tone).
In addition, steel Daytonas stopped being hard to get around 2008/2009. If your dealer has made your husband wait 3 years, I'd say find a new dealer, as yours isn't doing you guys any favors. 6 Years ago or more anybody that wanted a steel Daytona had to be on a wait list, but not anymore. Check some of the dedicated Rolex forums you will find they are much easier to get and no one is waiting years to get them anymore. Good luck.

Does anyone have the older ref 6263 and 6265?? Those are my favourites. Sadly where I live Daytonas are the most sought after watches by criminals. A lot of people in my city have had their Daytonas snatched in the street. In fact it's dangerous to wear ANY Rolex. I have an Explorer I, a medium SS datejust and a gold lady datejust, I put them all away during the S/S season when I wear short sleeves, and I bring them out again in the Autumn: very frustrating!
The 6263 & 6265 are the old manual wind Daytonas. You have great taste. They are simply stunning watches, but even a basic one in steel is the same or a bit more than the cost of a preowned Zenith based or in house Rolex movement all gold Daytona. If that manual wind model has has an original, highly sought after "Exotic dial" sometimes referred to as a Paul Newman dial... The entry price of it in steel starts at around $75,000 these days. I understand one recently sold at auction for record amount of around $200,000! Any one that has one has what is probably the most sought after Rolex by high end collectors. Anyone considering one has to becareful that someone hasn't modified or swapped dials to try to make one of the $25-30k models look like and sell for what the rarer exotic dial models sell for.
Yes I know, they sell for huge prices and, as you rightly say, at lot of the ones still around have had parts replaced, so they are not totally original anymore. The Paul Newman dial is probably the one I like less. I wouldn't mind having a preowned Daytona with Zenith movement either. My DH has always been a watch fanatic, so I've learned a lot from him! He's told me that in the 80's he had several manual wind Daytonas, both in SS and in gold, and he sold them for next to nothingI wish he'd kept at least one of them, so that I could wear it sometimes!
