cz versus the real deal...

Some on this thread have said no one's ever asked if their diamonds are real. Am I the only one who gets asked? I've gotten that question consistently. Also, diamonds do appreciate in value. A diamond purchased years ago costs more now for the same stone in comparable color, cut, clarity and carat weight. The reason they sell for so low if one tries to sell them is the same reason a used car dealer will offer you less for your car versus selling it on your own...maximization of profit!

Wow that is so surprising- I was just about to post (again:p) that I had never been asked about the authenticity of my jewelry and can't imagine it ever coming up but your post proved me wrong. I guess some people do ask questions like that. I would be completely shocked if someone asked me if my diamonds were real. It would shock me that the question would cross anyone's mind. I have never even wondered about any of my friends' jewelry, and certainly never asked. My conversations regarding my jewelry go something like this:
Your ring is so pretty- to which I reply, thank you so much. I think I would fall over if someone said, your ring is so pretty, is it a real diamond? As I've posted previously, I do not own any CZs so it isn't a matter of lying. I would just think it was an extremely tacky question. Of course taking a CZ to a jeweler and trying to pass it as a diamond is a different story of course. That's pretty funny actually.

whats there to "fess up to".....do people ask you if your diamond is real or fake...im sure most people dont. so im sure people arnt like "do you like my diamonds its real"

wether someone says a CZ is real or fake...its doesnt mean its fake or tacky. your first post stated its fake. A CZ isnt fake. Its not a boot-leg product.

OK IMHO wearing a CZ and telling people that its real is tacky...you don't have to agree with me, but lets play nice, shall we?

Yes, I have people ask me somewhat regularly about my CZ studs, to which I reply "Thanks! They are actually CZs from Nordstrom". LOL I'm not going to act like they are real when they are not.

And I also get asked all the time if my engagement ring is real (it is pretty large for someone my age) and I always say "Of course!" because it is a real diamond, as is the pave halo setting that it is set in.

I just prefer being upfront and honest about things, KWIM?

Let me clarify...when I say CZs are 'fake', I mean that they are not real diamonds.

I just think its tacky to try to pass something off as real when its a fake.

Perhaps, but I think a tacky question deserves a tacky answer. If someone admires my earrings, I will say "Thank you" and stop at that. If they go on asking a tacky question: Are those real? I will be very inclined to give a tacky answer, Yes. Some even go on : How much were they?, at which point I get super-tacky and say $10K! Generally, people like that won't ever make it to a circle of friends and stay in the acqaintance category. My true friends don't ask tacky questions and don't care if I wear D&G or H&M, as long as it looks good on me.

Do you consider people who cant afford things to be `refusing` to `invest`??? LOL. You do realise that diamonds arent an investment??? Really, see what your best price would be if you had to sell in an emergency. I can and do buy diamonds, my family is in jewellery and even I wear cz. I know people with 100`s millions....and I know as a fact that they wear cz. I wouldnt be calling the people I know who wear cz pretentious either!!! Unless you can hold it against someone that they choose a cheaper alternative.

And Im sure if we went through everyones house, we would find a whole range of cheaper alternatives being employed.....save for a select few who may live in $20 million dollar homes.....and even then. eg Is everyone living with no replicas of furniture, no prints, all original artworks etc???

Maybe Im more open minded but when I see someone who is obviously wearing a fake, I say to myself, Im glad that person has a chance to experience something that society pressures us to believe has value, even though they cant afford the real thing.

When a very wealthy person is wearing a cz, likely no one would guess to tell the tale!!!!

Either way, it doesnt bother me and I have no issues with cz. If I had to judge someone it would be more likely about their whole lifestyle than what jewellery they wear!

I agree with your post. Btw, there is a good article online about people who tried to sell diamonds:roflmfao: and ended up keeping them because the shock of the peanuts of the value they were offered for the real gems was too much to handle. It's amazing to think how much people are affected by advertising. Wake up ladies, diamonds are not an investment and they are not forever, like any form of carbon, they burn in a fire. Oh, and diamonds aren't a girl's best friend, get a dog :roflmfao:

Where I have found diamonds to hold their value is when I want to upgrade my jewelry. I take my pieces to my jeweler and get an excellent trade-in value for the new pieces. In fact, I'm on a jewelry ban for an unspecified period of time, after upgrading my wedding set, diamond pendant, and diamond earrings:wtf: At this point, I do not buy jewelry that can't be traded in for the full purchase price.

don´t do costume jewelry myself but anyone can do with their money what they want to do cz is no fake for me it is just that cz

ah and btw diamonds , gemstones and jewelry can be investments if you buy the right pieces ;)

Interesting points on this thread. It seems that the marketing has got through to many, and thus the feirce loyalty to the diamond. Mind you, there is a big range in what a diamond can look like, so I am assuming that those who are adimant that its diamonds or nothing, are refering to the 10% of diamonds that really stand out amoungst the 90 % that are just ordinary garden variety. Im assuming that people realize that many diamonds are with flaws bad cut and noticable color. Surely they all arent woth sticking up for??? LOL
And as far as diamonds as investments, well that brings the % even tinier again as even those in the trade consider most diamonds to not be in that category. To be regarded as investment would take some pretty rare characteristics, and although they exist, they go for a premium to begin with, and mostly are not worn.

My husband sells diamonds and everyone who knows about jewellery knows that the second hand market for diamonds is dismal. Even for my 1.28 carat diamond I couldnt sell it to make it worth selling. So I will keep it. Sure the price may have gone up to buy as brand new since I got it 15 years ago, but that doesnt translate to me selling it to someone second hand. And its E, VZS1.....its of no great interest according to what those in the game tell me. But thats ok, I dont need the money to sell it, but if I did, I think I would be cursing it right now!!!!

I wont be adding to this thread as I think people are way of the topic. I understand those prefering to not use cz in their lives, and those who do. I understand that those who do may be choosing to because they cant afford the more expensive option, or they may have other reasons. They may intend to showcase the cz as real, or others might think so with no words spoken from the wearer. At the end of the day, I dont think its such a hot topic. And I think it is poor form to call others names like `pretentious` which adds nothing to the standard of the debate, and it certainly does not reflect accurately the range of reasons or circumstances that may have lead to the person wearing the cz.
eg I know of one woman who had her diamond er stolen, it was underinsured, and she now wears cz as she cant afford to replace her diamond.
I personally have lost 2 very substantial tennis bracelets woth over $20 g. so I know that sometimes it just doesnt pay to have the real stuff.
The other day when I lost my 2 c. earring, I was very happy it was cz!!!!!

Anyway, enough said. Peace and good wishes to all our diamond admirers!

littlesharon therefor i have specifically written that not all diamonds(gemstones/joaillerie pieces are investments just that they can be if you know where to buy and what to look for .
the thing about diamonds and marketing or true value - basically everything only has a value if any other person is willing to pay for it. a picasso bought yesterday for 20mil$ could technically be worthless tomorrow if noone would be interested in it anymore kwim. so in the end it is all kind of a marketing ploy no matter what and like all things in life there is almost never any guarentee.

Since it doesnt pay to have the real stuff, lets all go buy the replicas or CZs of the world guys!!! :yahoo:And if we lose them, we'll be happy they were fakes!!! :yahoo:Thats a great idea! Awesome!!! Lets spread the word from this generation to the next!

None of my friends ask these types of questions. I generally encounter them when, say, I am in line at a store checking out, etc.

1st off I would never ever ask anyone if their diamond/CZ was real.

I have also never been asked - my center stone is 1.35 - so it's not a gigantic rock or anything. It is real - which makes me personally happy.

I have CZ stud earrings - I lose studs often - to purchase diamonds for me in a stud earring would be like flushing $$.

I think everyone should do what they want. I never stare at peoples rings trying to figure out if it's a diamond or a CZ - I just don't care. A woman at work once asked me to pick her diamond stud from her cz stud in her ears. I picked the wrong ones of course since I am no expert.

A girl I know has a very nice wedding ring set. Center stone 1-1.5 carats.
She has several times worn a huge CZ ring instead because she personally likes big flashy rings - it's obvious it's CZ & she freely will tell you. In her case I almost think the real deal was a waste & her hubby gets PO when she does that. Do you blame him? Why spend 5-10K on a diamond when they're happier wearing the 150.00 CZ?? That's what he's thinking anyway......

Everyone is different. I would never ever do that.
