I asked Jackie directly. Susa's right in that Jackie does not think there is anything wrong with the leather on the bag. She was very adamant about that. She said the marks were consistent with some striations that occur on animal hides. Her manufacturer also said there was nothing wrong with the bag, and they refused to make another one. So Jackie is buying a new bag for Susa because she didn't know what else to do. Jackie has to pay for it; she can't get free bags because BE is a company. She also said she would get her website people to make it more clear to customers that marks can and DO occur on some of BE's leathers. I asked Jackie about the marks because I am eyeing some matte leathers as well, and I wanted to know more about them. I don't think the resolution to Susa's problem with her bag is a secret. On the contrary, I think it's good that we know how it finally turned out. And I hope Susa's replacement bag is everything she wanted from the very beginning. We all deserve to have the bag we crave, agonize over, and ultimately buy. It's a huge deal to us because we love pocketbooks. And we've all become quite accustomed to talking about them inside and out, how they smell, how they match our shoes, how gorgeous they are, and how beautiful they help us to feel. It's what this forum is for, right? And I'm glad things worked out for you, Susa!

I don't quite get this. You mean Jackie is simply a middleman between us and the manufacturer and nothing more and that is why she says she has to buy the bag for susa?

I suppose she does have to pay for the manufacture of another bag and she uses a place that takes her orders as well as orders from other people, but that is neither here nor there - as far as we are (or at least I am) concerned, with regard to her bags, as the owner of the business Jackie IS the atelier, and whatever problems she has with her atelier, it is none of our business. Whatever she has to pay the atelier, the cost of raw material, overheads...that is none of our business either.

I've had problems with bags I've bought from other designers. I once bought a Speedy from LV, which had a small issue. I spoke with someone, who asked me to return the bag and then they sent a replacement. I am sure they have their own issues with their manufacturers, but I don't think I've ever read anywhere on tPF that a designer had to BUY their own bag to give as a replacement when a customer was dissatisfied..only that a customer had their bag replaced by the designer/ design house at no cost. LMAO!!! We live and we learn....

Maybe she has to buy the bag because she has to pay the man who makes it? I really don't know. LV is a lot bigger than BE, and they have machines and assembly lines and can make thousands of bags in a relatively short amount of time. Perhaps that's why they can afford to just give away a bag at no cost? Jackie's business is so small in comparison, and only little bits of her bags are ever swept under a sewing machine needle. I would assume it takes more time and more (wo)man power to create a BE bag. I don't have a pocketbook making place, so I truly don't know how the finances of one works. I'm just in animal rescue, and we are non-profit!

Yeah...I guess to me it felt a bit like a guilt trip, one that would maybe make the customer feel bad about the inconvenience and the cost she was incurring by being unhappy with her bag. Most businesses suck it up and don't talk about that kind of thing with other people - it's bad for their public rep in the long run.

I'm happy to hear there was a solution being offered tonight!

But, I have to add a few comments. First, the last thing I'd want to hear if I returned a faulty handbag is what was stated above. I"m sorry but that's not really my concern if Jackie would need to buy a new handbag on my behalf. That logic serves primarily as a guilt trip on the customer. I agree 100% that Jackie is the atelier. I do understand that BE is a small business but still there should always remain a level of sensitivity and professionalism.

Second, I happen to know that if there was a solution being offered by Jackie that it must've just occured today. Susa has been quite distraught over this situation now for awhile. There were several emails where Susa was told there wasn't anything BE would do to help her since they considered it normal UNTIL she went on the PF to share her experience.

I"m happy for Susa that she was resourceful to use our forum for support but can't help but think what the outcome would've been for a BE customer without knowledge of this valuable resource.

In any event, I"m happy for Susa. I love happy endings and I have to say I had a feeling once this became public results would happen fairly quickly!

Susa, I'm happy to hear you're getting another bag.

Just an FYI.....I called Prada last year about their painted Fairy bags and they could give a damn less about the problem or about offering a replacement for a faulty "paint-ruined" bag.

Jackie IS making an effort and while LV makes bags a dime a dozen...hey....they can pay Madonna millions to be in their ad campaigns.......my guess is a few hundred defective bags to them is NOTHING to them in terms of replacement. LV is a conglomerate....part of LVMH. There's a BIG difference between them and BE....no comparison.

No matter what, there's going to be criticism......what kills me, is that those who are not at all affected have the most to say.
