Coach Returns Policy

Someone has probably said this, but I will say it, too. I wonder if this change to their return policy hasn't backfired, at least in the short term. Someone mentioned they were inundated with returns in JAX. I say that it backfired because at least for me, the few things I returned I would have probably just kept in my closet with the tags on forever had they not suddenly changed the policy. Their policy change prompted me, and I know several others, to do some major closet cleaning of bags and items we'd collected but hadn't used. I returned almost $500 worth of stuff that was over a year old.

One of the bags was almost 2 years old. The SA was the store manager, and when I did that return in December she was not happy at all about having to take it back. I had it in writing via email from Coach that I could return something that old, as long as it was new with tags. She looked it over hard, even taking it to the back and said she was calling someone to make sure she could take it back. Of course it was brand new, with tags and the dust bag, and I had the original receipt. She said several times customers shouldn't be allowed to return something they'd had that long, even if it was new. I just politely said I was in compliance with Coach's policy, both on the purchase and return. She knew I was. She kept the printed email where Coach had told me I could return it to the outlet, and said she was going to talk to corporate about it.

Maybe this policy will work in the long run, but it's only going to make me decide quickly which bags to keep and which ones to return promptly. Perhaps that's what they want.

She was just being rude and bit$h$y. Being a manager she should know what their policy was/is, if not, she's inept. I'm sure when the bag is put on the shelf it will sell along with all the other older stuff they put out there.
Some of the bags on the FOS this last week are two+ years old and they sold out quickly, though I imagine they will come back for the next FOS to "sell out" again.

I had a few things I was undecided on and could have returned. But after careful consideration, I decided that I really am happy to have them after all, because I really don't care much for the new SV designs or where he's taking Coach in the future.

Well, Katierose you and I still see eye to eye on a lot of things. Like you I think there will be a lot of returns in this crunch period. I for one will buy less because, if unsure if I want to keep something I am uneasy that I will make it back to the store to return in 60 days. I sat on a lot of my NWT stuff and didn't return mainly because I didn't keep good track of receipts.

I do know I bought a lot I could return and never did. Now I just won't buy.

I agree. When you abide by polices that are set by the company, your returns shouldn't be an issue and you deserved better customer service, Isufan02. Coach had this return policy for years and if it were such a big issue they should have changed it long ago.

+1. My Coach purchases have just about stopped. I'm not crazy about the new designs. I'll look for older items on eBay or during one of my infrequent trips to the outlet.

I hear you. I kept debating, but it was such a busy time over the holidays and then this last weekend, I was really under the weather, I just figure I'm stuck with them or will sell some on ebay. Driving all that way to take back a brand new bag with the receipt and getting such scrutiny about it almost made it worse than if I hadn't returned it at all. I think the Boroughs really reeled me in, but now, I've got to stop because I am fast running out of room in addition to the crappy customer service Coach gives.

I'm sure you're right. I returned many items I would have kept forever. The policy caused me to be worried I'd be stuck with them if I didn't act now. So I returned everything that still had tags except for one thing I bought last month. If Coach hadn't changed their policy, I would have probably eventually used them or given them away as gifts.

I think they could have implemented the return policy for new purchases but kept the old in place for items purchased before that date. After all, we had receipts that said we had forever and SAs that told us that when we bought it. In my mind, they went back on a promise.

The good thing is that my credit card bills will be lower this month with all the credits.

I would agree that is a bit OTT after it's been stated and verified no need to carry on. All that said n done, i have bought Coach for a few years now and had no idea they even had a return policy like that lol (er.. had)

I keep all receipts, still, when doing my return today at FP, they only found 1/4 of my orders on the system. They scanned and keyed manually, repeatedly. Still I'm stuck with most items. They told me to try returning at the outlets, since their systems kind of different. Okay... Guess we won't be able to get home till after midnight tonight. I'm not too worried though, there's always eBay...

That's terrible. Anything over a year old isn't going to be in the system but as long as you have a receipt they can enter it manually. I was able to do all of mine at the outlet. I think they can also look things up by your credit card number. Someone else had trouble at a FP store.

Thanks I shall stop by the outlet tonight. Sounds promising! New policy is annoying, but at least it forced me to deal with my Coach additions.

What crap, they just didn't want to make the returns! Older items whether returned in FP or the Outlets will need to be entered manually. Each store has a binder that identifies the category for bags, shoes, SLGs, sunglasses, keyfobs, etc. They need to enter that dept & SKU number when the original information is no longer in their system.

In addition to the policy change lots of SAs seem to have taken it to another level, as if they're on a personal mission to somehow find a way to refuse the returns.

Hopefully everyone who has wanted to return has been able to. It's really unfortunate that there will likely be people trying to return after the deadline (whenever that actually is?) and they will be turned away because they don't know about the policy change.

Coach just keeps finding news ways to 'alienate' the few customers they have! If 'that' was a business, they'd lead the pack!

Thanks Whateve and Coachgrl. So after the FP, I did go to the outlet. Had much more success there. Still came home with 6 bags and a few small items, which is fine. They're earlier purchases I've made with my Canadian credit card, and although I still have the same card they can't find it in the system.

Why are they being so picky and needing to find the transactions in their own computer systems? If one has their receipt, by Coach's own return policy, one should be getting a refund. Sounds like the stores are inept, or just not wanting to refund the money.

In December I needed to make a return of something I bought in October (with receipt) and they couldn't find the transaction in the system.. I think they just have really outdated systems/lack of training. They manually entered it and I felt like I was in the store forever.

I would not make a blanket statement about that as not all are the same. I think some do not know how to and others may not want to because it probably dings the store and they are already struggling to make sales so returns just lower those daily amounts. Just my two cents.

Agreed, some SAs know how to process older transactions and some don't. But if they're not making returns because they could get dinged for it in their daily totals; they have to also consider the lasting impression that refusal leaves on the person trying to return within the rules of their policy. That person might reconsider buying from them in the future.

It's called Customer Service, and successful companies provide it on both sides of the transaction. As someone who was banned by Coach, I'm not a customer of theirs anymore but I still have a fondness for the brand and it's unfortunate the direction their business is going in. The games they play with their customers & the inconsistencies carrying out their policies are hurting them.

I've returned ALOT to Coach even being banned without any problem, so I just don't understand their mentality towards others who can still buy their product??????
