I've finished the rehab of my husband's old suitcase. It is a black Transatlantic Leather Commuter 70303 SV BK that I gave to him as a gift in 2012. It originally sold for $498 but I got it as an FP Delete at the Men's Outlet for only $154. We certainly got a good return on investment because he has used it daily for several years, but the leather had finally worn through on the corners and the plastic piping was sticking out - and the edging had worn off on parts of the handles, and it was scuffed and dirty.

I bought a new black Bleecker for him for his birthday and wasn't sure what to do with his old briefcase. I knew that it would clean up well, and the bag was in pretty good shape except for the piping and edging issues. The zippers and snaps all work well, it has the original hangtags, the lining was unstained and intact, and I was delighted when the original strap suddenly appeared from the depths of the bag in pristine condition!

But I have never had much luck with piping repair and I usually try to avoid it, but then he told me that a guy he works with offered to buy his old briefcase (even with the broken corners!) That inspired me to try and rehab it and let him have it for free. It's nice to know that someone appreciates the bag and will put it to good use.

I will post before and after pics of the handles, the piping, and the entire bag. First here are Coach pics of the original bag - and what it looked like when it was brand new!

Here are before and after pics of the worn edging on the handles, it wasn't too bag and all I did was use 2 applications of black, puff paint to camouflage the damage a little bit.

My poor track record with piping repair continues with this bag and I plan to suggest that the new owner take it to a shoe and luggage repair to try and get the piping replaced by a professional. The best I can say is that it looks better (IMO) than it did with the white plastic piping sticking out!

I used leather glue to secure the plastic piping to the corner - and I covered it with masking tape overnight to keep the piping in place until the glue was dry. Then I covered it with 3 coats of black puff paint and let it dry.

And here are before and after pics of the entire bag. I vacuumed it, gave it (and the strap) a bath in Dawn, stuffed it with old towels and let it dry, treated it with leather therapy oil, Apple conditioner (I am out of CPR), and finally Black Rocks. Finally, I gave the hardware a little buffing with a soft cloth - that's it!

Overall I am pleased with the results and the leather is soft and gleaming again!

Nicely done katev! You should feel proud and so nice to be giving it to someone who appreciates it.

I'm doing the same type of repair on a strap edge. Plastic edge coating was cracking or peeling off. I'm trying multiple coats of Fiebing's Edge Kote to fix. I'm wondering if a very thin coat of Fiebings Leather Cement on top of the Edge Kote (after it dries) would seal it. I'll report back if I decide to try that.

Update: I ended up not using the leather cement as a sealer over the Edge Kote. After it dried, it didn't seem to need it.

My bottle of Edge Kote is over a year old, and it has thickened some. I always stir it gently before I use it.

Looks like a different bag - great job!

Thanks so much! I think it came out great, I just wish I could do a better job with the piping but I did my best!
