Thanks so much whateve, might be time for me to make a trip down to my shoe/boot repair shop tomorrow to see what they advise. I do thank you for your help! I got this bag for such a great price that I guess I shouldn't complain too much, doubt I'll find another one that low....

Well, my local shoe repair shop said that they don't "do" piping or edge coating so I'm on my own. For some reason the edge kote that I've put on seems to be rubbing off when I wet my finger and brush it over the area.....bummer!
I wonder if it's just not completely dry yet or if I have to seal it with something. It's been a couple of days since I've put the edge kote on.
Overall I feel that the handle looks just fine....unless someone was really examining it closely I doubt that they would even notice that there was no coating on the edge of the handle.
I'm really happy that I decided to keep this bag, I love it!

Any chance you applied EK on top of any of the existing 'rubberized' edging? I suspect EK doesn't bond well to plastic/rubber.
I ask b/c I had a similar experience on a non-Coach. I'd made a small edging repair and ran a coat of EK over the entire handle edging to make it look fresher. It looked great until I picked up the bag with damp hands - eeek!

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I got all of the coating off but who really knows? It looks surprisingly fine so I'm not worried but will have to obviously seal it with something. We have a Tandy leather shop in town so I may check with them.

I'm doing the same type of repair on a strap edge. Plastic edge coating was cracking or peeling off. I'm trying multiple coats of Fiebing's Edge Kote to fix. I'm wondering if a very thin coat of Fiebings Leather Cement on top of the Edge Kote (after it dries) would seal it. I'll report back if I decide to try that.

I've used Leather cement on edges before, but I don't think it was on top of the edge kote. I think I did the leather cement first. I've never noticed the edge kote coming off but I don't use it much.

Great! This got me thinking resolene might also be an option. I've got too many experiment ideas and not enough time...

That sounds like a good plan, please let me know if you have success with that and I'll copy you!
I'm including a photo of the Gramercy strap with a strap from my Rebecca Minkoff MAB mini bag where you can see the difference in how each strap is finished off. On the MAB (reddish color) the leather is tucked in and then stitched so no need for any type of plastic edge finishing which I much prefer. These always wear better and I wish more handbag designers would finish their edges this way.IMG_7202.JPG

For those of you who have machine washed bags...
If Woolite is too alkaline, what do you use as a detergent?

I use Leather Therapy products that are designed for cycling leather items through the washer, see the links below. They are not cheap but you don't use much and they last a long time.

I've had this happen before with edge kote. I don't know why! And also, I have noticed other reviewers reporting this on amazon. I'm bummed because I used to use it on edges a bit, successfully at first. I wonder maybe if I didn't mix the stuff through properly. Or if while applying multiple layers you have to wait for days for it to dry first. Or if it got old or something.

Yes, yes, and yes, I guess it could be any of those things....just wish I knew which so I could fix it!

I have two thoughts about the edge kote at this point. The first is that when I started applying it to my handle it was very damp/raining outside so therefore humid weather and it may take longer to dry. The other thought (after reading some of the amazon reviews) is that I may have missed a critical step which is to wipe off any excess product after applying each coat.....I didn't do this.
I'm going to try that technique today and keep applying a couple more coats. The little blurb about the product says that it's 'water resistant', not 'waterproof' which is kind of a bummer. I'll still probably want to seal it with something when I'm completely finished but at this point I'm not sure what.
