I've had good success getting out water marks with a bath and reconditioning. If it is truly just water staining, they seem to come out. It can be hard to tell what the stain is until you get the bag and start working on it, however. I have a British Tan Weston Shopper that has some other type of stain on it, probably an oil of some type. It also had water staining, and I thought the oil stain was a water stain when I bought it. The water stains came out, but the oil stains didn't, and I haven't decided what to do with them yet.

I was researching and found this youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx2DG5Dgmpw) about stains, and it does mention oil stains and using corn starch at time 3:19 if you want to skip the beginning of the video. I have zero experience in rehabbing so I don't know if it would work, but it might be worth a shot since you probably have corn starch sitting in your kitchen anyway!

Ladies, I think I am going to have to report myself to "Hoarders". Because you are all so inspiring (or is that enabling), I have been "stockpiling" purses to rehab while the kids are in school, so I gathered them together for a pic. I just realized that there are MORE somewhere in the basement. HELP!!!!! I will post the pics once I find the rest of them! :shame:

Me, too! I seriously am getting a Willis hoarding problem. I have a friend who saw my black one and wanted me to do one for her, so I started watching for a deal on a black one for her for the last several months. I ended up finding two and a mahogany, so assuming they come out ok, I'm going to give to family members for Christmas gifts. I also found another black Willis with nickel hardware and one that is camel colored that I'll probably keep. I'm coveting a dark blue one on eBay right now, but the price is creeping up. I also want a City Willis in the older style. I have a problem, but I love to carry them to work.

I can't wait to see your picture.

Ok, ladies. I have a new rehab problem child, a NYC era black Madison satchel. I will post pics when the camera charges. I kind of overpaid for her, $24+ tax, so now I feel like I have to save her. :/

She had a mold problem on the inside, and was flat, squashed, dirty. What I managed to overlook on her was the splits on her piping. I fixed the mold, but now I am left with a very, very, VERY dry bag. I have slathered on about an eighth of a bottle of Leather Therapy, and it keeps soaking in. I am worried I will never really restore any kind of suppleness or shine to the bag. Has anyone ever been unable to restore suppleness to an extremely dry bag?

My other issue is in addition to the splits on the piping, there are some areas that are deeply scuffed and abraided, as if the top layer of the leather has been scraped away. This only became apparent after I bathed this bag. I know I can dye the lighter areas, but I feel like I should coat this area with something to cover and stabilize it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Other than send it in to Coach and hope for a miracle and a 40% off letter? :graucho:

For the dryness, I recommend that you keep applying Leather Therapy (every 24 hours or so) and brush it a lot with a horsehair brush between applications. (And I mean a lot. The brushing will do wonders for it.) Once you get the moisture back into the leather all the way, your scuffs may not seem as bad. A couple applications of Skidmores and Blackrocks may help them as well.

What are you going to do with the splits on the piping? I have a bag with a piping split that I have to figure out what to do with, too.

This happened to me with a moldy bag. The surface of the leather was pitted. It was only apparent after the bath. I put a ton of coats of conditioner on it and it soaked them all up except that it kind of beaded up over the spots. The color wasn't affected. The bag was improved but the leather never got soft and supple.

ETA: I have another bag that didn't have mold but was extremely dry. After tons of conditioning, it now feels like a saddle. It is stiff and the patina almost looks like wood. I think there is a point of no return.

This was a really long time ago. I had a wristlet that had the tattersall lining. It had a few spots so I pulled the lining out and washed it. The original spots came off but new ones appeared. They looked like grease. This happened several times. Eventually I got most of the spots off but only by making sure the previously clean areas didn't get wet again.

That's weird! After I asked you about it I remembered that I had pulled out the lining on one of my Bleeckers that was just a little dirty and washed with mild soap and rinsed. It came out ok, in fact it was such a non event it slipped my mind. And I washed my ink medium duffle when I got it too. I was afraid the blue would bleed onto the lining but it was fine.

I guess I'm rehabbing in my sleep now, these two bags were pretty recent too.

Hi, ladies! I'm curious if anyone can give me some ideas on a temporary alteration to a bag. I bought a city bag off ebay and I'm wondering if there are any creative ways to shorten the strap without actually cutting it permanently. I'm not really a cross body person, but I really like the shape of this bag! I would like it to hit mid torso level. I tried just tying the strap in a knot but it just looks silly. Any ideas?

My city bag will hit me close to mid torso if I put it in the shortest hole. You could get another strap with dog leash clips and attach that to the rings. Then just either let the original strap hang down or tuck it inside.

Mine hits right at my booty on the shortest hole. That's a good idea to just get a different strap. Thanks! I keep trying to somehow loop it through the clasp double but that's not working as well as I envision it in my head!

I was redirected here by Hyacinth, and I know whateve has mentioned a bag bath so it led me to read up here.. Amazing job you ladies are doing btw!

Just wanted to ask though, if I get a camel coloured bag, can I darken it myself? I know it can be done, but what's the best way? I really want the bag to be british tan colour but I can never find a good one on ebay unfortunately (c'est la vie of course...) so I think I will resort to layering leather dye or conditioner onto it if you ladies suggest so :)

thanks!
