How do you actually get out shoe polish? Also how do you tell there is shoe polish on it? By the shine or smoothness? I think I have 2 black bags that I am suspicious of.
With lots of acetone, patience and a sunny day to do it outside. Once you feel a polished bag you will know. It doesn't have a smooth soft feel to the leather. Rather it feels like a plastic coating on top.

ETA. You can also see the leather wrinkle when the leather is bent.

Any advice on how to handle that burnished leather?

I'm wondering about this too. I have a tan Ergo Hobo that is burnished and has some small water spots. I just searched this thread using "burnished" as the search term and there are several posts about it. Apparently others have dunked them. I'm off to read up on it!

I need a whole thread on this topic! The most detailed instructions for acetone use I've found are here: Coach Rehab and Rescue Club
Definitely agree only use acetone outside, which is why I have a pile to do from winter!
My polish ID notes - anybody have more/different info??
If polish hasn't been buffed in, it looks thick and greasy or waxy and will create drag when you try to buff with a cloth. If it's been buffed, it looks really shiny and feels smoother & slicker than regular leather (kind of like a thick layer of CPR that hasn't been buffed) and even plastic-y if a lot was used.
I've gotten fooled when it was only used in a few spots and when it was almost all worn off and by a few things I bought online. Ugh!
ETA: also, conditioner won't absorb easily over polish and polish looks like dull spots after dunking.

I haven't had good luck dunking burnished leather. It makes the texture of the leather different. I think using Obenauf's LP or Black rocks is better than dunking. Maybe try vinegar on the water spots and see if that helps?

I second the vinegar reco. I'd be wary of CPR - too much moisture, maybe? I put it on my Ergo Retro Zip (also burnished) without thinking and it created some faint spots. I didn't dunk.
I'm glad this question came up, as I just got that burnished Rambler and probably would've thrown it in the sink out of habit!

Thanks ladies. I read the info in that thread, it's helpful. Basically still can't decide if this bag has some shoe polish on it or not. I guess I will wait for a good warm day and give it a wipe with the acetone and see what comes off.
