Speaking of hardware...I'm working on a vintage Geometric Bag right now. The turnlock was missing the back plate, so I decided to replace it. I've ordered one from
Coach repair, so I will get to see what the newer ones look and feel like.
I've hadn't done one of these before, so I carefully pried open the prongs on the old turnlock. I used a teeny screwdriver from an eyeglass repair kit. It was not that easy! The prongs were tight. I had to be careful not to let the blade slip and gouge the leather.
The Geometric's turnlock is easily accessible, but on the other hand, it is surrounded by smooth leather on both sides. I can't imagine trying to do this on a bag where the back of the turnlock is way down inside the bag.

While waiting for the new turnlock to arrive, I cleaned the old one just to pass the time. Suddenly I recalled seeing a piece of metal in my stash of miscellaneous parts, that I had no idea what it was. Light began to dawn and I realized it was the back piece of a turnlock, exactly the piece I was missing. I am mystified how I ended up with it, because I've never replaced a turnlock before! But my magpie habits (oooh, a shiny thing! I will save it!) must have paid off. I dug it out and polished it up too. Now I have a complete set to use in case the one Coach sends me doesn't look right on my bag.
