I need advice for these two. The top bag has stains on the suede and leather. I'm a little worried about bleeding. I've cleaned the lining pretty well and the few things I've tried on the smooth leather didn't work. Would you dunk it? What is the best cleaner to use, especially for the suede? I don't have a good track record with suede rehabs!
For the wallet, which is a Dooney, those white marks are much more noticeable in person. Is there anything that will blend them in better? It scratches really easily and each scratch turns white. Even when I tried to use a rag to wipe it down, if I used any pressure, it make white marks.

On the wallet, I've worked on a number of Dooney wallets and coin purses with this type of coating on the inside. I wish I knew what it is. My guess is that it is some kind of sprayed-on textured finish. Underneath it is a layer of white cloth. Here's a photo of the inside of a Dooney wallet with a kisslock coin purse that shows the coating worn off and the white fabric beneath it. I have seen checkbook wallets where someone has scraped off virtually all the coating to get rid of it. The Zip Along wallet you have is prized by vintage Dooney fans, even with the known issue of the fragile coating.

Thanks! I feel really lucky to have found it, and it is wonderful to own something so prized. I have another vintage Dooney wallet where the inside of the coin purse looks very similar but is obviously made of something different since it held up to washing. I tried trimming the frayed edges but they started to fray again immediately, so I put a thin layer of glue on the edge and that seems to be working. I guess it wasn't used much at all since it is really in pretty good condition. Even with all those coins in the pocket, it still has most of the original coating.

Good idea with the glue! It does look like it's in very nice condition overall. I'm glad to hear the "bonus" coins didn't affect the pocket too much.

The most I've ever found in a purse was $20. I've also found a hair band, an emery board, and a packet of Kleenex. I found a $2 bill in one wallet.

Did some rascal on here recently get a mahogany? Ranch bag from Tradesy/Mercari/Posh (I forget which)? I just need a trigger warning before you post it . I was eyeing the 'regular' zipper pull on the inside pocket, wondering if it was legit when bam! Sold. I'm puzzled at how a regular zipper pull could be a replacement - aren't those assembled as one piece? So it's got to be original, right? I expected the usual circle-chain pull and am not familiar with that style, so it stumped me.
Congrats to whoever got that smokin' deal - looked in good shape

ETA: eeek meant to type rascal and typed scoundrel - oops!

It wasn't me, but I'd love to find a Ranch bag. I saw a poorly listed Rambler on ebay the other day. I was hoping no one else would recognize it and I could pick it up for the opening bid, but someone did the BIN.

Lol! I surely envy someone with more knowledge at their fingertips and who can be more decisive! I didn't even know what it was at first so had to dig around. But now I understand why you'd like to find one ;)
Once I jumped on a bag that I was sure was a Ranch bag and it turned out to be a classic pouch with a different kind of strap. I should have realized it was missing the turnlock but I was so focused on the strap that I didn't notice.

I've only rehabbed 3 bags so far and I'm still figuring it out. I've read a lot of posts on this thread and seen quite a few products mentioned. I can't really afford to try them all out myself so I'd appreciate some opinions on your favorite products, or ones you dislike, and why. Some I've been looking at are Blackrocks, Leather CPR, Obenauf's, and Leather Honey. Also wondering what product is best for dunking. Thanks!

I'm new, too. I have however, managed to build quite a product library in the last 6 months.
I was using Dawn and cleaning strength vinegar in the wash. I think I was rushing things and even though I was using a small amount of Dawn, I wasn't rinsing enough leading me to re-dunk. I just bought a bottle of Castile liquid soap. I've only used once, so I can't really say. It does seem to have rinsed more throughly.
I like CPR for bags that just need maintainance conditioning. I get it at BB&B with a $5 coupon and its 10 bucks. I haven't done the math per ounce vs. other conditioners, but it seems reasonable to me.
I really like Obenaufs oil for distressed leather. It really soaks in. That's my go to on most bags and wallets. (I really only buy glove tanned leather.) (Well, and a stray newer 'China' Coach here and there.)
Obenaufs LP is a must in my book. It locks in the conditioning, deters mold and waterproofs. All good things in the PNW. However, DO NOT OVER APPLY. Use sparingly.
Blackrock to finish. Again, use sparingly.
A good horsehair brush for buffing at the end. I really dislike buffing, but sometimes I can convince my daughter to help.
Hardware. I use Metal Glo and a Dremel simply that's what we had here at the house already. Before the Dremel idea, I used Never Dull wadding polish. Again, we already had it in the garage. It worked well, but takes patience and time.
I buff the whole bag and hardware afterwards with an old, soft, white baby diaper.
Another item I bought for rehab is a micro vacuum adaptor kit. It just goes on your household vacuum and it does wonders keeping your bags spic and span in those dark corners after wearing, before storing.
I know many love Lexol. I find it too light. It takes many coats. I think I would buy CPR or Lexol, not both for regular conditioning in the future.
Again, I'm new. I'm sure many may disagree or at least have more experience than I do. I'd be interested in trying the Leather Therapy. I think it's a thicker conditioner.
That's all for now.
