Help, experts! Somehow my ginger color block swagger got scuffed. The shiny ginger colored leather came off in two places leaving lighter orange, raw leather underneath. In one spot, it's sort of peeled and I'm wondering how to sort of "glue" it back down. Leather conditioner makes it look better... Until it dries. I would post a picture if I knew how. Thanks in advance for any advice.
You can probably glue it back down with leather cement or a glue like Aleenes. You might be able to cover up the scuffed areas with acrylic paint. If the paint isn't shiny enough, you can cover it with gloss varnish.

I am rehabbing a vintage Doctor's Bag that is really roughed up. I don't know what this owner did, but this leather is rough and raw like it was scrubbed hard with a Brillo pad. It has no shine anywhere and is rough to the touch. There are no smooth surfaces on the bag anywhere and the bag has a "matte" appearance. I tried dunking the bag which really helped even the color and helped with the appearance of the scratches, but the leather still is very "raw" and matte and is drinking in conditioner like crazy, which is causing it to darken quite a lot.

Here is the "before" of the bag so you have an idea:

What can I do to smooth down and protect the leather? I tried buffing with a buffing pad and that helped a little, but not much. It appears that it needs something to seal and smooth the leather. I have Blackrocks but I am not sure if Blackrocks alone will help.

Thanks in advance!

I wish I knew. I have a bag with similar problems. Blackrocks will give it a smoother appearance but it is temporary.

Have you ever tried using a leather sealant like Fieblings Resolene? Was thinking of testing it out but am afraid it will ruin some of the suppleness of the leather.

What about testing it on the handles first? It looks like they're roughed up too. (I can't really tell but it looks like the hang tag is the only part of the bag that might not be roughed up!)

On the Sacs Magnifiques blog, she swears by a product called leather rejuvenator. It's basically a product you soak your bag in. Maybe look into that?

Hello all. I bought one of those whiskey colored 65th anniversary bags with the big turnlocks. I have scrolled through the discussion on this thread about rehabbing them, and frankly I'm mystified. Are they vachetta or not? Can they be dunked? I'd like to dunk mine, if only to freshen the striped silk lining. But I do not want to darken it-- rather, to brighten it by removing grime, if possible. There is also a verdigris stain where the brass buckle hits the strap, which I tried removing with vinegar to no avail. Also, I saw some mention of Cadillac Conditioner. Is it that different than Lexol and Leather CPR, which I already own? Thanks in advance for any insight.

I think those are vachetta leather. I've read on here that members advise against dunking them because the legacy liner runs. The Cadillac Conditioner might be the best one to use as it is supposedly good on vachetta leather.

To clean the lining, you can pull the lining out of the bag and rinse/clean with soap and water. I've had good results using a carpet foam cleaner (you can find them in the automotive aisle). I've had best results using Armour All's. Ink stains can be removed with a Tide pen, although some ink stains never come out. Good luck :)

Just wanted to share a before and after of two of my most rehabs. The first is a Burgundy Courier that was already in great shape, but I wanted it to be even better

My second is a large Rambler that is the new love of my life. She'll be complete when I get her strap back from the cobbler tomorrow.

Soaked both in lukewarm water with baby shampoo for 30 minutes and gently scrubbed them with a baby brush. Then I put them in a cool water bath with no soap for 10 minutes. I stuffed them both and rotated them as they dried. While they were still damp I started applying leather restorer and conditioner once every 24 hours for 3 days. I removed the hardware and polished it with Never Dull. Today I applied Blackrocks and buffed it with a horsehair brush and put the hardware back on. These are actually the first two bags I've done, but I've been reading up on it/asking advice for a long time. It's such a fun hobby!
