I didn't want to be rude and not post my update but it's not a happy one!

Now I know why I either buy new or live with what I find in the condition in which I find it!

I wouldn't have been bothered by the fading and condition of the collar (and leash) had my puppy been female but it didn't work for my little boy.

I decided to buy red Rit liquid and used it full strength letting it soak overnight. (I only tried to dye the collar; the leash is still the original color.)

Once the excess was rinsed and the water ran clear, I dried it, hoping I'd have a nice redder-than-it-looked collar.

The result was awful! The collar is still pink but now a slightly redder pink than it was, no longer matching the leash. And the leather seems to have absorbed the color unevenly, with some areas slightly pinker or redder than others.

Bottom line, I'm giving up and found another pre-owned BLACK collar! (And now the pink collar and pink leash aren't perfect matches to each other.)

I do appreciate the advice I received but rehab isn't my thing.
I/m sorry it didn't work out. I appreciate you sharing even though you didn't have a success. Did the RIT cover up some of the scuffing?

There was a larger amount of color loss on the leash but I didn't touch that.

The collar did wash well so the dirt came off. It's a lot cleaner than it was and some of the scuffing did cover some but the leather didn't absorb the dye as I thought it would.

It was worth a try though. Maybe a more experienced rehabber would have had more success. I was almost to the point of using black or brown shoe polish (since it's just a collar) but then I found a listing on ebay and bought it.

Thanks again to all who advised.

Just thought I would post a note about using "Rub'n Buff" It is super stuff for brightening up SMALL bits of hard wear on purses. However. here is the caveat. FOLLOW the instructions CAREFULLY. When they say use a SMALL amount and apply with a finger, they mean it! I very carefully used a TINY bit on a cloth and got it on the leather and although acetone will remove it, the leather colour comes with it. The amount to use is about the size of the head of a pin or less and I would ONLY use my finger now for control. Try it on something else before you attack your purse. I used "Antique Gold" from Amazon.

You can tell I am new to this business and will stick to buying new purses or possibly used in good condition. I have spruced up a few of my older purses though and knowing how to wash linings and cover scratches is great!

H. :smile1:

Just won this on eBay... I think it's the bleeker St archival peyton... Creed 13501...it has this blemish on back. Seller listed it as a "pinch", looks like a frown on the back pocket .. It's patent leather, any idea if it can be repaired or even what it is exactly? Won for $37 so even with damage I figure not bad lol

Hello all

In a misguided effort to touch up the contrasting trim on a vintage dooney ( i know, i know)--i got british tan leather dye on the surrounding taupe.

Any suggestions as to what might remove the wandering dye without denuding the taupe in the process?

Thanks much for any ideas!!

I need some advice from the rehabbers! I have a patent Zoe in Petrol and the edging on it is cracking all over, even on the zipper tie piece! I want to know if the Fiebing's Edge Kote is the way to go to get it back to smooth and normal again. Also, how on earth do you apply it? I am assuming very carefully and with a toothpick or q-tip? TIA!

I have used Edge Kote many times. Really it's not that hard to use. Yes, Qtips and toothpicks. Use as thin of coat as you can. Build up coats if more is needed, but with cracking you prob just need a light coat. The only cons is it is hard to find in any color than black and brown. It is awesome, works well. The original was put on with a expensive heat machine, but this does a pretty good I imatation of it.

This grey Willis arrived yesterday! While it photographs darker than it is, the color is a deep grey - almost sable. It is in really great shape except the corners have some wear. I don't think I will dunk it but will just use CPR on it. Not sure if I should use Blackrocks - will it change the color? Any thoughts? TIA!

It's beautiful! Blackrocks might darken it some but it would be temporary. You could try it on the inside pocket first.

My latest projects. I have them on the authentication thread too.

Thank you for your response, I am glad to hear it is easy to apply. I checked the edging of the Zoe and it looks to be black, so fingers crossed it is a good match!

I use the little sponge tipped eye shadow applicators to apply Edge Kote. I just buy them at Sally Beauty or Target. They seem to stay neater than q-tips. Just be sure to wipe of any drips or smears on the leather away immediately. That stuff is hard to remove once it dries.

I just use a paint brush to apply edge coat. A fine one of course. I have found that puffy fabric paint fills in the gaps of cracking in modern bags. I like edge coat to put the color back on the edges of straps on vintage bags and sometimes even on the corners.
