I have a question on edging on handles, etc. I know we discussed the Fiebing's edge coat, which I have used many times. But I have only seen it in black and brown ( which most are.) but what about all those other colors? Is there a clear? Or do you use wax?

I did find tPF thread on the edging from 2008. For further reference to those out there wondering the same question as mine. I contacted some leather craftsmen and they said the edging on high end purse is put on with an expensive heat machine using a wax type edge, that makes it more flexiable.. That is why a cobbler ( or yourself) can't really duplicate that edging. Yes, the Fiebering does a decent job, good for a patch here and there. It is much stiffer then the original, and I sure found that out repairing a wristlet strap. I think I will dye the small area were the strap is sewn to the buckle),and apply some clear shoe polish.

No, I have not. I have in other nice purses I trashed out for keeping repairs ( hardware, leather strips to make tassels.) But I have seen a lot of horse tack and saddle makers studios. I love leather, and Coach vintage leather is my weakness. I read somewhere how long Coach tumbled their leather in the dye, forgot how long it was, but it was longer then anybody does.

Thank you!
(FYI, the color is much lighter than my pic)

I do have a question for rehabbers out there :

As I was trying to figure out what was going on with this bag, I found this site that describes the tanning/dyeing process. (I’m sure you all know this already, but was new info for me:)
http://www.saddlebackleather.com/craftsmanship/chpt4

It talks about the “Wet Blue” Leather before tanning & says that if they cut corners & leather isn’t dyed completely, the leather ends up with that blue layer sandwiched between front and back color, and is considered cheaper leather.

I’m assuming that’s what is going on with my Coach bag. (BTW I did have it authenticated on the Forum.)

- Has anyone ever had this happen (turn blue) while washing a lighter colored Coach bag?
Or have you had blue show through due to color loss? Is this unusual?

I’m starting to collect Sonomas, but am thinking twice about buying another light colored bag….

Thanks in advance for any insights!
Very interesting information on different leathers. Thanks!

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to rehabbing but am hooked, thanks to this thread!

Most recently I have been working on a green/tan Carson bag with a few corner splits in the piping. I used Aleene's Fabric Fusion for the repairs, as that's all that the JoAnn's store I was at had in stock. It worked well enough, though the glued repairs are fairly flexible (which is good, yes?) and rather shiny (not what I wanted). What do I do to fix the shininess? Will the mixture of acrylic paint/Leather CPR help? Or should I use a different glue entirely?

I'm anxious to hear any responses, as I just picked up a nice NYC-era Rambler that has a couple of splits. One of them looks like it might need some filler to be built back up...does anyone have any specific product suggestions?

Many thanks in advance!ImageUploadedByPurseForum1434222708.549367.jpgImageUploadedByPurseForum1434222724.725906.jpg

Speaking of vachetta, I tried Whateve's tip of pure vinegar and a magic eraser, and it worked beautifully (or it would have if I hadn't been a dumdum and scrubbed too hard on the darkest spot).
Sorry, this isn't a Coach. :shame:
I've heard of using a Magic Eraser on vachetta but not vinegar. Do you wet the eraser with the vinegar? I have a natural whipstitch Poppy bag that has some dark spots I'd like to work on.

Yep, wet the eraser with vinegar instead of water. I found on the bag I tried it on that it only worked to a certain point, and continuing to scrub made a light spot.

Without digging through this long post...

You know those plastic sheets protecting the agenda books, does rubbing alcohol remove the ink from them?

Or is there something that works better.

I don't want to scratch the plastic/vinyl.

Thanks.

Ladies, Please help me what to do with the back handles of my Mini Riley. I got it Last July SAS and I baby my bags. Seems the color rubbed off.. I tried applying coach conditioner but nothing happened. The whole bag still looks as new except for the back handles. I'm sure it's not color transfer... I'm so sad:cry:

I'm not an expert, but I think I'd try the paint and conditioner touch-up. If you haven't tried it before, you go to the craft store and get the closest paint color. Mix one drop of paint to one tsp of conditioner, and apply it to the spots of color loss.
Maybe a more experienced rehabber could offer their advice? :smile1:

Dunking everything has worked so well for me that today I dunked a light colored canvas bag with red leather trim without thinking it through. That didn't work out so well. Does anyone have any tips for getting red out of the light colored canvas?
