Hi, I'm Bel. Wanted to introduce myself since this is my first post. I've been reading here for a little while and I love rehabbing old bags I find at Goodwill and ebay.

Need some help! This one has me stumped: it's nubuc, Sonoma (?) and it looks like it has maybe sticker residue on it: that little circle on the flap.

I have used a suede brush all over it and that made it pretty nice except for the little circle. Not sure what to try. Would baking soda work on it? Or ruin it? Is the trick to put the baking soda on the spot, cover it with a paper towel and then iron over it? Then how do you clean the baking soda off it? I'm really scared of ruining the nubuc.

Another problem: I spilt about half a bottle of Obenauf's oil on the carpet the other day. Oops. I tried soaking as much as I could into paper towels and quickly applying it to some bags but there's still plenty of oil left in the carpet. I've been rubbing my feet in it on purpose since it's such a great moisturizer... but I can't help but thinking I should somehow clean it up better since it's left a great oily mark. Any ideas?
Hi! Welcome! Nubuc is very hard to rehab. Did you wash it? It might wash out. It is hard to tell what it is. I've never done the baking soda trick but that might work.

I have no idea how to clean the oil off the carpet. Probably a powder cleaner that you vacuum up would be a good start.

I know some people have rehabbed them. I remember someone using a iron. I can't remember the details, but whatever she did reshaped it. Then you could try the crayon/iron trick to patch up any spots on the outside.
Thanks, now I think I can vaguely remember someone (BB I think) making a new rigid bottom out of something for one. They just don't look like they would respond well to a dunk. I'm glad my Copley and Deauville are in great shape.

Hi, I can't give you any advice regarding rehabbing nubuc but have you tried that sawdust stuff that you see janitors use to clean things. It might absorb some of the oil and prevent it from spreading.

Welcome.

You could try baking soda or cornflour. It will just brush off afterwards.. If that doesn't work then acetone, but you may need to dunk it afterwards if it leaves a mark.

Pity about the Obenauf's! You need to soak it up somehow. The suggestion of sawdust is good and then maybe use some if that carpet cleaner powder stuff that you sprinkle on.

Hi all, I haven't been around for awhile. I already have a houseful of bags and I have been trying to stay off this forum, out of coach stores, and away from thrift stores to avoid buying more. I really need to figure out what to do with all of them!

But I wanted to share that I recently gifted one of my rehab projects to a friend and she was thrilled. I had given her a rehabbed black Willis bag for her birthday a few years ago and she carries it all the time (in fact, it could use a little spiffing up!)

So for her recent retirement party I decided to give her a brown Stewardess Bag that I originally purchased at Savers for $36.

I hope you are all well and enjoying your bags and rehabbing!
Gorgeous! What a lovely gift for your friend. Much more meaning than just going to a store and buying something that comes gift wrapped by a stranger.

Hey ladies, and ... Gents I have been looking for my first rehab project and need help picking my first (victim) test subject. I more need help not picking a complete disaster, and not spending too much on something that may not work.

So for my first project I am looking for a small to med size shoulder type bag that will be good for running around this summer, so far I am looking at....

I agree with whateve. Look for something simple to start with. The bGs from the '90's usually respond well. Look for one that has no issues such as ink or pen marks. There's plenty out there.

Hi, all. I have a question. I have quite a few vintage Madison bags, a Copley, Sutton, Deauville, etc. No Gracie yet, though. Copley's and Gracie's are so structured but lots of Pierre's and Regis's can look so beat up. They are wavy and bumpy and the bottoms fall down. Has anyone ever rehabbed one of these? I have a Beechnut Pierre with all the problems I just mentioned and wondered if it's worth rehabbing.
I've dunked a few Madisons. It does help a bit with re-shaping. They dry a lot quicker than the thick smooth leatherware bags. I sometimes use a brick wrapped in a towel to flatten out a saggy bottom while it dries, but not on a Madison because they're too small. You could try JOODLZ's trick of cutting out a piece of thick cardboard or plastic and placing it in the bottom while it dries. It might help re-shape it and you might not need it after it's dry.

Oh I didn't think I could wash nubuc. Will that fade it? I would be scared the color would all bleed out of it like suede. I've only once tried washing a Coach bag that was mostly fabric but with suede trim and the suede trim bled all over the white fabric and also faded. After that I'm too scared to try again. But I guess that might well be the only way. Do you think some dawn might help shift the sticker stain?I can't believe someone stuck a sticker on that beautiful bag

Thanks to others for idea about sawdust to soak up the oil. That might be necessary since though I've noticed the oil spill stain is looking much lighter I do think it has spread a bit.

I've washed a few Sonoma nubuc bags. They came out fine. I don't think they faded. I think older bags wash a lot better than newer ones.

Thanks TTB, another good tip. I was wondering where I could get one of those things they use in shoe stores to put in the base of shoes to keep them upright. They are sock-like and seem like they are filled with bb's or something. They are pretty heavy.

Thanks for the links whateve. Madisons make me so nervous, they're so ladylike.
You're welcome! They make me nervous too. My Biltmore looks fine on the outside. The inside has something that looks like white-out all over, but I don't want to do too much scrubbing, and I don't want to risk a dunk. If it hadn't been messed up on the inside, I wouldn't have gotten it for the price I paid. I'm pretty conservative about dunking.

Okay I'll try that. Thanks! And as a last resort I'll try the acetone as another poster suggested if I can't get it off any other way. I find acetone a bit scary though as it has taken the color off one of my bags before and ruined it.

Yes, that is true. I worked on a Dakota. I don't remember washing it. They are fairly structured so mine kept its shape. The smooth leather trim is quite a bit lighter in color than Sheridans. I think I used primarily Blackrocks everywhere.

I didn't plan on washing this as it's pretty clean and the shape is good. When you say everywhere, I'm assuming you mean the trim as well? Also, how long do you leave the Blackrock on before buffing? Do you apply as per the directions? I've never used this product before.
