I did, on Sunday. It made no difference at all.

Here's the spot:

I saw the post about the baking soda some 50 or so pages back but was not sure about results others have had. Waiting (kinda) patiently. This snowy weather is making me stir crazy!

I'd try corn starch. Sprinkle then cover with kitchen paper and apply gentle heat. Put a piece of kitchen paper behind it too on top of the lining.

So I just won this bag last night. The seller just messaged me and said she just noticed the handle has stains. She sent me this photo. I'm waiting to hear if she knows what it is. Any idea of the chances I can clean it up? p.S. This photo may be really small - can't tell how it will actually post.

ETA - really small! Will try to make it bigger!

I took a pic of it bigger on my laptop with the iPad. Best I could do.

It really depends on what it is. At least you can remove the strap to deal with it. Is the strap reversible?

You can't remove or reverse the strap. It is attached on one side.

She doesn't know what it is. She said she hasn't used it in 2 years. No idea how she didn't see it when she was taking photos for the auction. What do you pros think - should I risk it? $100 is a big risk.

ask her to give you a discount to account for the damage. After all, it is likely it wouldn't have been bid as high if she had disclosed it. It is on the strap so even if you can't get it perfect, I don't think it is that noticeable. What is her return policy?

I don't have to go through with the sale. She's offered me 10 percent off.

Does anyone have experience with neatsfoot oil and specifically how long it takes for the smell to fade? I received a slim satchel today that I got for a great price ($13 plus $7 shipping) that has great patina but smells literally like motor oil. Seller mentioned that it had been "cleaned and neatsfoot oil applied". My fault because I did not know it smells so awful.
I would dunk it but it has two small ink spots that I know will spread once she's in the bath. She also has a tear in the interior pocket that wasn't mentioned. Emailed the seller and he said he was aware it smelled like oil but didn't know abou the tear--can't really miss it. Anyway, for the price I paid it's probably not worth it to return her if I can save her.
Any thoughts other than just trying to air her out?

I had no idea neatsfoot oil had such a bad odor! If you are in an area where you can, I would put it outside in a protected area for several days. Other than that, you can use some of the other remedies we have for smoke smell. Can you wipe the bag down with alcohol or another conditioner? It might remove some of it.

Neatsfoot oil is made from cow shins and feet bones so It shouldn't smell like motor oil. Maybe air it for a week. Perhaps spray the inside suede with odourless Febreeze or similar.

If that doesn't work then dunking is probably your only option.

If you treat the ink spots first they shouldn't bleed when you dunk.

Post a pic of the torn pocket. Someone may be able to advise.

Me either! I already wiped it down with an old washcloth dunked it very hot water and applied some Blackrocks. It's better but I can still smell it instead of the yummy old leather smell the vintage bags usually have. I am in NY and it's just about zero with a 3 foot snow pack so I have her airing out in the garage. I will wait a few days and hopefully it fades.

Good ideas--thank you. What product would you treat the ink stain with so it doesn't bleed? As far as the pocket goes it actually looks like it wasn't sewn properly when the binding was sewn to the pocket and it left it open. It wasn't marked irregular like some of the old ones were which is strange. I think I might also try the alcohol as Whateve suggested.
