I thought I would share my current attempts at rehab.

Successful removal of horrendous ashtray odor from a 9715 Legacy Companion black:
Leather Therapy Wash (for washing machines)
I followed the instructions, used a front loader, and rinsed it 4 extra times
Blocked it with rolled-up, dry washcloths
Used string through the buckles and turnlock hole to hang it from a hanger which I hung on my dry line in the bathroom with a tiny desk fan for air circulation
Replaced washcloths after a few hours with fresh dry ones
I let it dry completely before I conditioned it, longer than I wanted to wait because I wanted a couple of opinions on if the oder was completely removed and it took over a week to get the sample I wanted
Consensus is smells like leather again so I conditioned it today with Leather Therapy Restorer and Conditioner. Will see if it needs more tomorrow.

Followed the same wash process for a musty a 9966 Legacy Zip british tan.
It still smells old. I have not conditioned it and am considering a rewash.
It smells better but needs more work. Did nothing for the faint pen mark but wasn't expecting it to.

I bought a tiny Scribble C demi or top handle (dk name or style) at Goodwill "as is" for $5.99 (plus half off so $3) for a practice fabric purse. Interior full of ink, exterior dingy dirty, has a small amount of fraying on the corners. Bless its heart.

I tried these things for the interior ink removal with ZERO success, not even fading:
rubbling alcohol
acetone
A-32 Stain Remover
Goo Gone Spot and Stain Remover (not the sticky remover)
Grandma's Secret Spot Remover
Washed in machine

I washed it with Ivory laundry detergent in a front loader
Slightly less than .25 cup of soap in cold water with 2 extra rinse cycles
Blocked and dried as above for leather bags

The fabric looks AWESOME. It is crisp white like new, the colors are bright and did not bleed. Leather handle looks good and has yet to be conditioned so no harm there.
The only problem is the seam glue yellowed slightly. My sister has a Hamptons Weekend sateen white that yellowed on the seam (for no apparent reason) so I am officially wary of white fabric bags from Coach.

I took before pictures but haven't done after shots.

Washing in a machine is probably not as therapeutic as a dunk but I would definitely do it again. I liked the Leather Therapy Wash, it doesn't seem to dry the leather too terribly and is not overly fragranced. They have a Rinse and Dress which I think is a milder wash with conditioner you can use with a machine but I didn't purchase it.

Now I need to watch tetondeb's video!

Thanks for sharing. Would love to see some pics. You could try rinsing the Legacy Zip in vinegar.

Finished a few more. Forgot to take before photos though. They were in good condition to start and just needed dunking, re-shaping and conditioning.
First up, made in NYC mahogany Blazer Bag #9830. I did need to re-stitch a small section of the zipper.

I really like navy blue Megan #9921 from early 1990's. The front is a bit faded but it's less noticeable after dunking and conditioning. I will keep this one because it's so cute and I haven't seen many.

Navy blue Saddle Bag #9851

Gorgeous leather on this 1998 made in Turkey chocolate brown Willis #9927. Even DH was impressed and said I should keep it!

They are all beautiful. I think the blazer is adorable! I know exactly what you mean about Turkish leather!

Thanks Whateve. The Blazer is cute. Too many cute bags! I'd love to get something really special in Turkish leather. Do you know how long that plant was operating?
I don't have a huge collection of Turkish creeds. I think it was operating from around 1997 to 2000 but it might have been longer than that. I don't know if the leather on the bags with the "I" factory code is the same as those with the "2" code. My Lula's Legacy has an "I."

I agree if there's no big stains or discoloration or odours. Personally I like to dunk because I don't know what previous owners have had inside the bag, but that's just me!
WOW! Interesant!!I've never had a bag crack ~yet. I've had all kinds of weird coatings on them too..Vitamin e oil&shoewax, layers of shoepolish..I guess to each her own!!.I have had success washing all kinds of leather.& lambskin..different dsigners~Valentina, Vittadini ,Bally, D&B.Brighton...that being said~I'll knock on wood that my next bag doesn't crack!! I Still need to soak & srcub
,I skeeve when I think of using other peoples bags..that haven't been washed thoroughly....

Keeping my fingers crossed that my apple conditioner can rehydrate and lessen the stains on this baby..

It looks to have improved on the other side, but it looks like it's DRINKING the conditioner. Talk about dry! :faint:
