I am trying my 2nd rehab. I have the before pic. When I put it in the bath, the water changed colors!!! Thoughts? I am worried because this is one of my grandmother's purses. The first one came out fine....

Hi ladies! Happy turkey day, one day late! I had a minor epiphany yesterday, when my father (who is handy with these things) told me an idea. He saw the bag and said it looked like someone left it out in the rain! He said if you sand down a fine later of the leather, the stains will come right off. I did it and it worked!! What do you guys think!!?! I just did the front, it is quite a long process. I might keep going on the front but I'm not sure! What do you think? My next question is, after I sand down the entire bag, what conditioner/should I use to give the bag life again? And will also protect the now untreated leather?! I have CPR, Leather Therapy, and black rocks on hand. But I think I need something more drastic! I am working with cardboard feeling leather! Any thoughts? I have heard about Leather Honey, Leather rejuentator, ordeurfs (spelling not correct, sorry!) please let me know what you think!! Below is a before (bottom) and after (top) thank you!!

I don't think sanding is a good idea. I did it to one of my bags. Most of the stains went away but I never got back the original texture. Blackrocks will restore it somewhat but it isn't permanent. I asked at a leather shop what I could do and they didn't have any suggestions. I've started putting Leather Refinisher on it but I'm getting brushstrokes. I don't know if the fact that I sanded it is preventing it from getting a smooth surface from the Refinisher.

At this point, I think it would have been better to leave it in the sanded state - sort of a very fine suede.

I would use Obenauf's. It does help restore smoothness. I think I recall Joodlz doing a similar thing to a duffle and she used Obenauf's also I have used it on parts of a bag where the leather had worn to the suede and it did smooth it.

ETA: here's the link to Joodlz's Duffle.

Last month it was navy, this month it's black! Finished these yesterday. Slim Duffel Sac 9060 (huge bag), City Bag 9790, NYC Companion Bag 9300, and Sonoma Small Bucket Natural Grain 4907.

I haven't quite finished the City Bag as it needs repair to the strap as stitching had come undone, and I discovered the strap keeper is missing.

Would someone please post a pic of a strap keeper of a City Bag as I will have to make one.
I was able to make a new strap keeper with some narrow stitched leather that I found at my favourite Leather and Saddlery store.

It never ceases to amaze me how gross the water can get when dunking bags. I just dunked my husband's Christmas present (a gorgeous brown Coach Metropolitan briefcase) which is in pretty decent shape, but the water was ORANGE when I pulled the bag out! Gross. It's sitting in bath #2 now (sigh.)

A mix of dye and dirt. It's the smell of some of them that I hate. Don't want to think about why they smell like that!

It's the hidden "treasures" I hate. I cringe when I have to put my hand into the pockets, not knowing what I'll find.
Agreed. Sure ink marks inside a bag make me think "What was the previous owner thinking?!" it's more the little "treasures" that make my mind start to wander as to how gross the previous owner was as I'm tossing the bag into the hot, soapy water!

Hi Ladies,

My beloved Caroline has lost it's Kote on the edges. I bought some to put on the bag, and I bought a small paint brush for the application. But then, I saw all the videos using a wool dauber. Is that better?

Thanks for the help.

Cheers!
