I'm always amazed at the difference between the states in the US, politically, culturally, economically. Australia is just one big, boring, homogenous continent. Each state has the same social issues, mostly the same laws and system, and the same two political parties. The only real difference is the climates, except of course in the middle which is one huge desert.

Oh, there are also definitely lots of scratches... sigh. I wish I knew what happened but of course I bought it (very) preloved!
I don't know what you can do about scratches. Coach brass hardware is easy to deal with compared to that.

I thought DOCRIDE was the Hermes rehab guru? There is an active thread called Vintage Bag Nightmares and Hermes Leather Care. Even if your bag isn't vintage you might get some advice there.

Yes, I've been getting docride's amazing advice. She's talked me through full leather rehab (her specialty) and now I'm the guinea pig for canvas cleaning. I snuck in here to ask specifically about Dremels, lol :p

Whew! Was a little worried. A few months ago I began my first Coach suede clean up, perhaps more of a suede mess up. Tried to remove a shiny mystery brownish spot from the turquoise suede. Brush and spot eraser had no effect. Got me some Kiwi suede cleaner (destroyer ?) and a better brush and soaked that spot till the suede was navy and scrubbed like crazy till the shiny stuff was gone. Big mistake, of course. Ended up with a light blue spot which was bigger than the shiny spot I started with. Grrrr.

Then I got lucky and found this thread. Also found a warning not to scrub suede too hard. Yep. I can vouch for that! All the bag bathing everyone was doing inspired me, so I dunked the bag in an attempt to drown it or clean it. Bag has dried. Spot is all gone. No shiny stuff, no light blue stuff. Just beautiful turquoise suede on a now very clean bag!
First pic is pre bath, and second pic is after bath. Wooo hooo! :woohoo:

Thank you wonderful ladies!

You must have replied to my post as I was amending it. After I'd posted it I saw that you had posted on the Hermes thread and tried to edit my comments.

Anyway, I wanted to say that I thought the bag looked great and that you probably notice the scratches more than anyone else will. If they really bother you you could Dremel the coating off down to the bare metal.

Vintage bags have scars - it's part of their history. You gotta love them or leave them!

Yay! Success! That turquoise is really pretty. Great job!

If it's tarnish you should be able to remove it with a metal cleaner or even just vinegar and lots of elbow grease. You don't want to remove the plating so don't use steel wool.

you know those 4 sided nail file blocks? try using the gentlest section first(I have no nails left) but it may work to get the scratches out without peeling off the finish..also,try the mixture salt, baking soda& a bit of flour..try omitting the vinegar use a drop of water..if it needs more help then add vinegar..stand back cause you will get a mini volcano
a pot of mac & cheese got left on the stove last night ..nice mess..but my go to has always been baking soda vinegar & hot water soak.. less scrubbbing..I've also been able to unclog the sink drains 9 times out of ten ..3 things you must have in life..vinegar, baking soda and BLACKROCKS...SORRY! FOUR Things,,I forgot the VINO!!! No wine??? No WUFFING!!:snowballs:

Thanks for the invite! Remember I was in Florida a few months ago? Unfortunately we picked the worst time to visit. It was hot and humid. We have hot but we don't have humid. I lived in San Francisco for awhile. It was so cold! The air feels damp all the time so when it is 60, it feels like 30 degrees. Here in the central valley, you wouldn't find it too cold. You would probably miss the rain though.

They just outlawed free plastic bags. If you want a plastic bag in the store, you have to pay for it. When I went to the drugstore, I refused to pay for the bag, I just stuffed everything in my purse. It was so full, I couldn't close it. Right outside the drugstore was a pile of boxes they were throwing away, so I loaded my purchases into one of their boxes. The next time, I'll check outside for a box before I go shopping there.

Believe me, you don't want Obamacare! The affordable care act is not affordable. I've got a $5000 deductible, and a bill of $700 a month for my daughter and me. They made my son get his own plan for another $200. I used to pay $300 a month for my son, my daughter, and me before *****, and the benefits were better. I'm counting the years until I can get Medicare, with free hospital care, $100 a month for outpatient services, and a deductible under $200.

OMGOMGOMG

I didn't check in on this thread for like 12 hours and (1) I'm amazed at how many helpful responses there are, (2) I literally just inquired after a NOT A DREMEL tool on Craigslist.

Time to back out now. I don't need nerve damage!!

... can someone explain to me how this extra fine steel wool works? Haha. My piece is tarnished but definitely NOT silver. It might be plated nickel and I'm paranoid that steel-wooling will rub off more plating instead of polishing it?
I tear off a small piece of steel wool to polish. Sometimes I use it dry but most of the time I use it with Wenol or vinegar. The vinegar causes it to rust so you have to throw it away after use, which is why I tear off small pieces to use. This is for brass, I'm not sure about nickel. Coach's nickel hardware never seems to need polishing. I've had some Brighton that is very thinly plated silver. I wouldn't polish that because the plating is so thin that it would be removed. I would think that Hermes would use a thicker plating.
