Patience is your best tool with rehabbing. I'd love for it to take a full day to do from beginning to end, but it can take as long as a week in the simplest rehabs. (At least it can for me, and a lot of it is just waiting.)

I agree. Some of my more complex rehabs take a month. Sometimes I just need to put them aside for a while and see what happens once the conditioner has really soaked in. Sometime I need to start again. For example I'm working on a Classic Pouch at the moment that I dunked and conditioned and then decided it needed to be scrubbed with acetone which I did then re-dunked and re-conditioned Then I stupidly placed the rolled up strap on the suede side of the flap and the conditioner from the strap has soaked through to the front of the flap leaving dark spots so I'll have to re-dunk again! :pullhair:

They all turned out beautifully! The color on the basic bag is gorgeous. I like that satchel--I tried getting one similar to that, but found a better one that has a shoulder strap that I use every once in awhile. I just started on a pocket purse today. Originally it looked like a BT bag, but once again it darkened up so much after its bath I'm not so sure anymore.
Thanks frenchie. I love tabac too and NYC burgundy. I have a bone and tan spectator satchel with a strap that is getting closer to the top of my rehab pile. Pocket Purses are great rehabs projects. It's always a guessing game regarding colours with the older bags. It's part of the fun.

Another question, then I will stop bugging you guys! My big Bertha is still drying. So in the meantime I want to start on this little lady.
My question is, should I worry about the inside being a suede like material?

I'm SUPER excited for this bag. I LOVE the style. So classic.

Anybody have any luck getting ink off the sueded side of a vintage bag? The pocket purse I'm working on has ink on the underside of the flap. It started coming off with some hard scrubbing with a soft toothbrush, but it would be really slow going. I'm thinking either a nail file or cheapo razor would work to give it a shave. The pile isn't too high so it wouldn't be very noticable, if at all.

Not at all--that's the best kind of bag to rehab! (Up until a bag I found this week, that's the only bag I've bought for rehabs.) Just be sure to pat it dry as much as you can, even inside each of the pockets. You'll still have to stuff it to make sure it dries to its proper shape.

The inside IS suede. It's the back of the smooth leather. No problems dunking this. You may also want to remove the turn lock first so you can polish it without getting Brasso or whatever brass cleaner you use on the leather.

Ink is a PITA.

Do you mean ink or pen marks? If ink, be really careful as it could spread and soak through to the smooth leather if you dunk it. It also depends on the type of ink. If it's water soluble you may be able to remove it as you've been doing but it is a slow process. If its not then alcohol may remove it but you will need to blot it off really carefully. I doubt you could shave it off as it would have soaked into the suede and just be sitting behind the smooth leather. It may be best to just leave it and be thankful it hasn't soaked through to the front. You could glue a piece of leather in the same colour over the offending spot, suede side up to cover it. Can you post a pic?

It's just ballpoint pen marks, and a lot of them. The majority of them are on the suede and don't sink through (which is why I thought a shave might help), but there's one or two on the leather side too. I don't have a picture at the moment, and with the leather being so dark from its bath it wouldn't be worth trying. I wouldn't mind having to re-dunk the flap if needed, but it probably wouldn't hurt to try alcohol on it while it's still damp. Fingers crossed!

I've only had real luck with a Dakota. I used Lincoln E-Z cleaner. You can also try sanding it. I use a sanding block. It doesn't usually remove ink because the ink is in deeper than that but you can give it a try.

I'm not dealing with the brass yet. It's really not in bad shape. I'm slowly getting my rehab materials.
That bag was dirty

It looks better after being washed.

Isn't it weird how gross the water gets when a bag doesn't seem that dirty? Every. Single. Time. Last night when I gave my BT pocket purse a bath, the water had a definite brown hue to it. (I'm pretty sure some of the leather dye that Coach uses comes out from being rehydrated, but of course it helps the color more than hurts it.) It's looking good already :)
