Sticky unknown substance came off with black saddle soap.

@ConnieinSeattle, it's been a long time, how are you doing? I ordered a tin of Fiebing's black saddle soap a few months ago but I never got up the courage to use it! Right now I am working on a faded black bag and I think that it may need more than the usual rehab procedure; could you share advice about how you use the black saddle soap?

And I'd love to hear from other rehabbers, too, thanks!

So I have this 1980’s Twin Clutch in bone that I don’t think was used much if at all. But the leather doesn’t have a smooth glossy surface, rather a matte finish that doesn’t go so far as to be nubuck but kinda soft like that (even though the leather is thick and firm in its original shape). The verdigris is bad around the turnlocks and I really want to clean that at the least. I’d love to wash the bag and try to get the edges a bit brighter too since they look like they have dusty shelf wear. But I’m worried I’ll ruin the leather? Or make the whole thing even more dingy? Anyone ever deal with something like this? ThxIMG_8321.jpeg

Hi! I'm like you. I've only used it one time. There was some sticky weirdness on a bag, and that seemed to remove it. I know Narnanz made a video using black saddle soap.

Had my first experience with black saddle soap today..
What a game changer.
Plus I used Wizards metal polish onthe hardware. So much better.
I'm afraid I forgot to take photos of befores. I git a big box of bags from that States and couldn't wait.View attachment 5941980
@Narnanz could you share details about how you use black saddle soap on a rehab? thanks!

Hey my friend...how are you?

Yes of course I can.

..small bowl of water and a small brush.
And towel that you are happy to sacrifice.
Cloth of some sort to wipe off saddle soap.

Have your can of black saddle soap ready and open. Wet the brush thoroughly and dip into tin.
Youu don't need too much really.

Scrub in sections for , wiping each section off as you go.

Keep doing this until you have done the whole bag.
It's just like using the ordinary saddle soap.
Just messier.

Unfortunately, I'm missing a section showing the wiping of the bag in this small video.

Thanks so much, your daypack looks fabulous and the information is so helpful!

Ok...XL Duffle arrived.
Lots of colour loss and marks.
It's even got what I think is a scar.
I'm not going to dunk, only saddle soap.
Will need to match colour I think.View attachment 6094086View attachment 6094087View attachment 6094088View attachment 6094089View attachment 6094090
I've never used saddle soap, does it require a small amount of water or is it just cream that you rub in? How do you get it off? For this bag I assume you will use a neutral color, right?

Hi all, can I ask you guys how you get your hardware - rivets etc - so shiny?
This is a picture from a 9085 feed sac listing (not mine). The hardware is so clean and shiny. Whenever I try to rehab these bags, the little button hardware is rusty and faded. The rivets and zipper hardware are too small for me to access with metal polish and if I do put any in there, I can't get it out of the edges of the hardware. What am I doing wrong.

I'm using this now. I find the it doesn't stain the leather.
The pointed q-tips means you can get tobthe rivets only.
I use Sunshine polishing cloths for the zipper and run it along them.
You do get fluff.
I polish before cleaning and then lightly polish when dry.20241126_151839.jpg

I find it better to use more water and less product.
You want the suds but not the saddle grit sorta.
I use yellow saddle soap for all bags. If it's a black bag I use the black saddle soap, but not all the time.
Black Saddle soap is messy. Don't wear white or clothing you like as it does stain. Let's why you need a sacrificial towel.

You suds up and scrub in panels...then wipe off.
If you are not sure of black then just use the yellow .
I've only done a few bags with the black. Still prefer the yellow.
